Dallas is coming off a second straight playoff berth, but a loss at long-time nemesis San Francisco in the Divisional Round overshadowed strides made last season. Are the Cowboys ready to take that next step this season? Well, before we look forward, it's always important to take a look back.

2022 rewind​

One high from last season: The Cowboys were actually good last year. And I know saying "actually" is kind of a low-key diss because I seemed surprised. But they were actually good. A lot of people also thought the Cowboys would lose in the opening round of the playoffs to the host Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tom Brady. Instead, they went out and smoked them, 31-14, in Brady's last game ever.

One low from last season: Ezekiel Elliott lining up at center for the final play of the game against the 49ers. You can close your eyes and picture it right now. It wasn't bad, in theory -- much like Crystal Pepsi wasn't bad, in theory. Actually, it was a bad idea.

2023 VIPs​

Quarterback: Dak Prescott. I love Dak. I do. But he can be frustrating at times. He was absolutely brilliant against the Buccaneers in the playoffs, racking up five total touchdowns and 305 yards passing. The following week, Dak threw for just over 200 yards with one TD and two interceptions in the loss to the 49ers. Not that one should be expected to light up a defense like San Francisco's unit, but Dak needs to avoid mistakes like the picks, especially the one in the red zone to Fred Warner. That was exceptionally exasperating. Maybe the switch to Mike McCarthy as play-caller will give us a more consistently great Dak. We're about to find out.

The NFC is really down overall. Once you get past Phil, SF and Dallas there’s not much.

AFC is so much stronger. And have all of the Elite QB’s.

It’s a year to year league…the narrative now is the AFC reigns and NFC sucks. And it certainly looks like that. Wouldn’t be at all surprised to see it play out that way this season.

What I’ve learned from almost 5 decades of NFL fandom is that I’m constantly surprised at how others are surprised at how fast things (and narratives) change in this league. There are usually 6 new teams in the playoffs each year…and about 7 new head coaches (some firings that shock you).

I have a feeling the narrative about AFC vs NFC is probably being a bit overblown.

The SB would support your point as Egirls took Chiefs to the brink.

But I think we can definitely say all of the Elite caliber QB’s are in the AFC which definitely makes for the potential of the best teams.

And we could probably argue that if we took any of those teams in AFC they’d be top teams in NFC. Not sure we could say that if we moved NFC teams to AFC.

But things can change no doubt from season to season but unless some NFC QB’s become Elite the AFC is a little top heavy at this time. And what is driving the narrative.

Probably so, at least for Jethro. But right now though the immediate monkey on the back is no championship game appearance which we are only 1 of 3 teams in NFC since our last appearance.

Mike McCarthy has constructed consecutive 12-5 regular seasons at the helm of the Dallas Cowboys. In the wake of this, few franchises would hear murmurs about impending 'heat' from an NFL.com writer concerning the coaching staff, but the Cowboys are getting just that.

Adam Rink released his State of the 2023 Dallas Cowboys on Friday, and the headline said it all: "Heat is on Mike McCarthy, Dak Prescott to lead deep playoff run."

Following a Wild Card loss to San Francisco in 2022 and another season-ending defeat at the hands of the 49ers in 2023's Divisional Round, McCarthy has proven he can lead Dallas to the postseason.

Moreover, he's proven he can win in the postseason, bouncing Tampa Bay in Tom Brady's final NFL game last season. The Cowboys made it to the Divisional Round as one of the final eight teams remaining in the league for the first time since 2018.

McCarthy started his tenure at 6-10 in 2021. Since that time, he has two trips to the postseason, winning a game in his most recent campaign. In every other industry, that's labeled "year-over-year growth.'' And it's a good thing.

Personally, I'd consider 2023 a reasonable facsimile of a successful season with an Eastern Division Championship, in lieu of anything better. I'm fairly easy to please, in keeping expectations attainable. It might even help to keep Coach MM employed for a comeback try in 2024.

Getting to an NFC championship game is a success only if the Cowboys had never been to one in the franchise's history. However, as we know, the Cowboys have been to 16 NFC championship games or their equivalent. They have won 8 of them.

Therefore, this franchise is not reaching a new point in their franchise history if they reach an NFC championship game.

All that we would be celebrating is the mediocrity of this team since Jerry took over football related operations

The Bengals went from zero playoff wins since 2000 and then put 3 in a row together to get to the SB

I stopped insisting on outcomes a long time ago. I am more interested in player development.

In my eyes in order for this season to be a success we will see players like Ferg, Tolbert, Golston, Williams, Osa, Tyler, Waletzko, Clark, Bland, and the rookies develop.

You get that and get some luck on the injury front and you have a shot to be extremely competitive and fun to watch.
