I agree. I will say I was disappointed in Bennett this season after seeing him play so well during the pre-season. I agree with those who think Bennett is immature and needs to do some growing up. Heading into his 3rd season I think Bennett will start living up to his abilities. I think all too often fans are quick to give up on young players
Let's try and remember one thing about how well he played in the preseason. He did that basically as the #1 TE, not the #2 TE.
Let's be honest here for a second. Every Offensive play has a series of checkdowns and it takes a fair amount of time before that checkdown reaches the #2 TE.
Let's say just for grins and giggles that Romo drops back to pass and his first read is Witten and he is open and throws it to him. Why does everyone seem to think that means no one else in the receiving routes did their job?
I have never understood that and I doubt I ever will. Does anyone really believe Jeff Robinson was a primary target back when he was our regular Long Snapper? Yet the guy got his number called in the redzone several times. What about New England and Mike Vrabel? Are we really so gullible that we think Vrabel was their best receiving option in the redzone?
So why did Robinson and Vrabel have that kind of success? Quite simple really, higher priority checkdowns are going to get tighter coverage and a lesser priority checkdown, like the #2 TE, has a chance to get open.
Bennett's time is coming. In the meantime he is quietly producing for this Offense as a blocker. I hate that blocking has become so under rated by some football fans. It really is a sad thing that so few people truly appreciate the nuances of the game.
