Martellus was barely old enough to buy a beer before he was handed a multi-million dollar contract. Put any fresh 21 year old male in his position and you're going to have some immaturity. He certainly has the intangibles and is already great in run blocking which shows he's willing to get down and dirty. I think he's maturing in front of our eyes and silliness aside, will be a great player for us.

...So it isn't a question of if he can play, IMO, we have seen flashes. It's whether or not 'Tellus can become focused and start closing in on his immense potential.

And I wish all of our players approached things the way Sky Miles does, but that's just wishful thinking.

I'm not happy with Marty B, I want him to grow up and be a pro, but I'm not ready to get a shovel and bury him yet.

The offense isn't dependent on Bennett, it can roll along fine whether he's on the field or on the pine.

Maybe the threat of losing snaps to John Phillips will light M80's fire.

Bennett can become such a weapon for us, I hate thinking the Anthony Fasano route is a possibility.

Bennett's smart, and he's got talent. There's no way to say right now whether or not he'll tap into it. It could be he needs something as simple as being deactivated during a game, or having Phillips take some of his pre-season snaps to get him focussing. Maybe having the owner call him out is enough. Personally, I think if Witten were out and Bennett were actually starting and the team depending on him, we'd see his best games. He strikes me as the kind of guy who's bright and immature and has a hard time focussing in a backup role.

Either way, he's not a prototypical person, and assuming he won't have a successful pro career at this point based on available evidence is foolish.

Jerry was an idiot for not trading this lazy immature idiot when he had the chance. I've been watching football a long time and I've never seen a player come off as IMMATURE as Bennett and go on to become a solid football player. All this dope does is stream himself live online and make STUPID Youtube videos showcasing his immaturity. When you criticize him for being lazy he gets angry saying we don't see him in practice and that he's doing what's being asked of him. True we don't see him in practice except for what we saw on Hard Knocks a couple of years ago which certainly wasn't encouraging but when you listen to how he comes off when he's being himself at home online he doesn't strike me as being dedicated to football or having the work ethic to be a great player. The guy has talent but to become a real good player it takes more than talent. This GOOF is more interested in making dumb video's and becoming a celebrity rapper than a good football player. This is just a SMALL example of the kind of crap he posts online to build his fan base because his play on the field certainly isn't drawing him any support. He makes these video's during the season moaning about having to leave for a team meeting or go to practice. The guy is an embarrassment and I wouldn't be surprised if he's traded during the offseason. John Phillips showed he can step in and get the job done. To become a solid football player it takes dedication and hard work and Bennett doesn't appear to give a ****.

Though I wont argue the fact that he does come off as immature, I will step back and analyze what available resources are there.

Lets take a look into the psyche that is Marty B.

A guy with his physical intangibles has basically been reduced to an extra blocker in Garretts scheme.

Would it be too bold of a statement to suggest that MB knew his role going into this season was going to be picking up the dirty work, not having a significant role in the passing game, but relegated to supporting Columbos inferior play.

While I agree completely that this is a team game, and he should embrace that philosophy, I'm willing to deal with his You tube or whatever he says in his rap... I dont really care,, he hasn't been arrested for drugs or killing people while driving drunk, so I will gladly right that off as being young and stupid.

Comparing John Phillips to the pedigree of MB is quite a leap of faith.
Dont get me wrong, I love what the young TE has shown, but he couldn't have filled MBs role in the 2TE set as a primary blocker... NO WAY man, wouldn't have happened, and Romo would have set the league record for most sacked.

Dont confuse MBs production vs his "assignment" .

Seriously... The guy is playing behind Witten... His talent and upside is ridiculous...

Miles Austin exploded when given the chance to start this season.

Marty B was given half the season to show the team what he could be.

And nothing happened.

These two players have two different mind sets as well.

Plus the fact that Romo has trust in Miles. He doesn't trust Marty B.

Uh, Roy Williams was the number one receiver that Miles Austin needed to outshine, while Marty is playing the number 2 TE after Witten.. totally different context.... the 2nd TE isn't anywhere near the 1st, 2nd or 3rd progression

I have to side with the OP. When I first got my twitter account, he was the first name I put in there because he was the only one I knew who tweeted.

It didn't take me long to realize this kid is going nowhere. He is quite possibly the most immature adult man I have ever seen in my life. He's not "being funny", or being a "character". The man is a flat out idiot. And anyone defending his simply doesn't follow him much.

He is a ridiculous fool, and I've never said this about ANY cowboy player...but I'm actually ashamed that he represents this franchise. The stuff that comes out of his mouth on twitter is vile, and disgusting, and he embarrasses the reputation of the cowboys.

The guy might have a million dollars worth of talent and ability. But there is no way in hell he will ever maximize it. Am I judging him? Yes, you bet I am. Because I've seen enough of his tweets and videos to know this kid isn't going anywhere. And if he was on any other team in the league, you all would agree with me. He is simply that stupid.

not rejoicing, the GMs are crapping their pants because their jobs are going to be in jeopardy as more and more teams realize they dont need GMs and scouts anymore.

Just listen to the guy talk. He makes interesting allusions and he clearly has a lot going on upstairs. I don't know that that translates to football smarts, and it doesn't mean anything at all if he can't get more serious about his game.

That said, the guy's becoming a victim of our fans ridiculous expectations. He is a very good blocker and wasn't a bad player for us this year. Not long ago people were falling all over themselves praising Bennett's whacky personality and saying he was going to take the starting job from Jason Witten. Now he's a bum. Go figure.

I don't really understand what the issue is that people have with the kid other than stats.

Fantasy Football really has ruined a lot of football knowledge. Everything is stats driven or nothing. I think as many as 70% of the guys in here would have considered Moose a failure.

Guys miss on one block and suddenly they cant block. Bennett was a valuable asset to this team and his role will grow unless we get made an offer for him that we can't refuse and consider John Phillips capable.

Great point. The Cowboys have real depth at TE. Let's not forget the pre-Witten days where we had squat. I think this year's Cowboys team was focused on team goals and if that means winning vs individual goals, I'll take winning. The stats thing is for those who are bored in the off-season, which is where we are now. Bennett will be just fine. If people don't like what he's saying online, don't watch it.

I agree. I will say I was disappointed in Bennett this season after seeing him play so well during the pre-season. I agree with those who think Bennett is immature and needs to do some growing up. Heading into his 3rd season I think Bennett will start living up to his abilities. I think all too often fans are quick to give up on young players

Thats because you don't watch his videos or see his tweets. I feel as though I have a pretty good read on you hos from our conversations. At least as much of a read on you as one can have for a message board. You're a no nonsense, straight up guy, who is highly respected on here.

But the stuff that comes out of this kids mouth is asinine. Are the vast majority of NFL players immature? Probably. But this kid takes it to a whole new level. My 5 year old is more mature than this kid.

Call me old fashioned, but when you put on a helmet in the NFL, I think you owe it to yourself, the team and the fans to AT THE VERY LEAST, try to be a respectful person. And this kid is so far out there, its insane.

I shutter to think of someones kids following this guy on twitter and think he's "cool".

I don't give a rats butt what his stats are. He could catch 100 balls next year for 1500 yards and I would still be embarrassed that he is a member of the dallas cowboys. He is a disgrace to the star, and a disgrace to the NFL.

Let's try and remember one thing about how well he played in the preseason. He did that basically as the #1 TE, not the #2 TE.

Let's be honest here for a second. Every Offensive play has a series of checkdowns and it takes a fair amount of time before that checkdown reaches the #2 TE.

Let's say just for grins and giggles that Romo drops back to pass and his first read is Witten and he is open and throws it to him. Why does everyone seem to think that means no one else in the receiving routes did their job?

I have never understood that and I doubt I ever will. Does anyone really believe Jeff Robinson was a primary target back when he was our regular Long Snapper? Yet the guy got his number called in the redzone several times. What about New England and Mike Vrabel? Are we really so gullible that we think Vrabel was their best receiving option in the redzone?

So why did Robinson and Vrabel have that kind of success? Quite simple really, higher priority checkdowns are going to get tighter coverage and a lesser priority checkdown, like the #2 TE, has a chance to get open.

Bennett's time is coming. In the meantime he is quietly producing for this Offense as a blocker. I hate that blocking has become so under rated by some football fans. It really is a sad thing that so few people truly appreciate the nuances of the game.
