When your coach runs the team like a circus, expect hillarity and high jinks to follow. The media took their cues from Parcells. Parcells is the one that5 brought all this drama to the situation. The Media would have been happier talking to him about el dorado in whenever the hell we signed him (seems like 10 years ago already). The media would have loved to sit down last week-end and discuss the draft. But mighty Parcells would not speak from upon high till 5/5 at 4:00p CST. So they had to wait and build up questions that shoudl have been asked 2 months ago. Speculate while waiting for the appointed time to arrive. (Remember most have columns and many have radio shows to fill, with no factual info, you leave it up to the hosts/authors to invent the story).
So if you dislike the media coverage the lion like pouncing on a rare spawn of a target in Parcells, consider the more in-accessable you are, the louder the bang when you finally meet the press, the hard and stupider the questions get. If you dont like the way the Jen-jen is treating your God parcells, then tell Parcells to quit acting like a pompous jack-*** and talk to pple every once in awhile.
Well Ash, we all have a point of view on this. Your basic premise is that Parcells had/has an obligation to talk about TO and every other decision made at the time it's made. Since he refuses to do that, his press conferences reflect a built up 'demand' that causes all kinds of behavior on the part of the media. All Parcells had to do was have a press conference when the TO thing happened and the draft happened and the "Insert Name Here" FA signing happened. No muss...no fuss (or at least a lot less fuss). I understand your point completely.
I just don't agree with it. This has been debated a lot on this board because most board members think that the media reflect the following:
1. They aren't really interested in the team or its prospects, just a controversial story.
2. They want to sell themselves as insiders even when it's clear they're not.
3. They try to create controversy where none (or little) exists.
4. They (as individuals) would like to become the story so they can make money as on-air personalities (Galloway and JFE).
5. The media not only want a controversial story, they want it handed to them, doing little background work and almost no stories on individual players.
I am not saying Parcells is a saint and as hungry as I am for tidbits of information during the offseason, I would listen to everything BP has to say about football (but I'm not interested in his views on the St. Louis Cardinals). My take on this whole situation is that Parcells is acting pretty consistent with his previous head coaching jobs and it is the media themselves that are critical of him. The fans, in general, either don't care about the Cowboys during the off season (How 'bout them Rangers) or don't care whether BP speaks....but in any event they don't care.
To sum up my points....
1. BP is not running a circus, it is the media busy trying to create one.
2. Parcells is not a god and will answer to the fans and the media through his team's on-field performance this year. A failure this year and he's done pure and simple.
3. The only pompous jack***'s I see are media types. I just don't see how you wouldn't put Galloway (and Hansen and JFE) far ahead of Parcells in this category.
4. Based upon what I see, I like Parcells a whole lot better than I like most of the media types.
