yep, and they i believe are selling their top star wayne rooney to Barcelona. ($$)

rooney is going nowhere, or at least they have said that he is not for sale at any price.

man utd's holding company is supposedly 700 million pounds in debt so that puts the long term stability of the club in doubt. if they can't afford top transfer fees and wages then obviously they won't be able to attract the better players to the club thus starting a downward spiral.

real madrid are fine financialy since the spanish government wrote off their debt as a gift from the spannish people in their centenary year.

also must admit i also was thinking along the lines of coca-cola, maccy d's etc

Man U is #1 and they still are having financial trouble. I read a report that the Glazers might be selling their shares in the team.

I doubt it. Companies that they own are taking £20 to 30 million a year from the club. If they stop winning trophies their debt mountain will cripple them.

Where have you read this?

the barcelona presidential elections are just around the corner and one of the candidates has stated he wants to sign rooney if he gets elected. there has since been paper talk of madrid and barca getting in to a bidding war for him in the summer but sir alex has stated that he will not be sold for any price. of course he said the same about ronaldo but i really can't see them selling ronaldo and rooney within a couple of years.

It's not popularity this list is based on. It's the value. I don't see any NFL other than the Cowboys that are more valuable than the Red Sox or Yankees. I'm surprised the Mets are on there though.
Now that I think about it, the answer I was looking for is revenue sharing. Value of a enterprise is based primarily on earnings, and popularity is a good proxy for earnings, but the difference between baseball and football is revenue sharing.

Without revenue sharing, the Cowboys would blow the Yankees out of the water.

LOL

I was trying to figure out the 3 bigger ones before opening the thread.

I guessed.

Coca Cola
Budweiser
General Motors

Haha yeah, I was thinking Coke and Apple.

Still would like to see us make a move above the Yankees.

Most impressive thing is that all the ones above have had success in a major way over the past decade. Cowboys have not and are still up there, where would they be if they were winning

Odd that three baseball teams would be in the top 10 and only one NFL team, when the NFL is so much more popular in the US than baseball.

Brand value is often correlated to age. Yankees and Sox have been around forever. Mets brand is more contemporary to the Cowboys.

It makes sense. It's world wide brand value. Baseball is more popular to the rest of the world than American football is. That's also why the list is dominated by soccer teams, yet the US hardly cares about soccer.

That's true too. But we're already hated as it is. Can you imagine if Jerry had the luxury the Yanks had and kept all his revenue

The difference between popularity in the US is so significant, I can't imagine that a worldwide difference, though I don't think there is any, would make up for it.

The Yankees pay a hefty "Luxury" Tax.

Baseball has a very strong international appeal, especially with all these international star players in the MLB so I'm not surprised. Plus, the baseball cap trumps any other type of fan gear.

That list is not correct! They should have included the Billions, that American taxpayers have had to shell out to the city of New Orleans. Otherwise there would be no NFL in New Orleans! Now go back and re-figure those numbers again!

They also have a a very lucrative exclusive TV deal in NYC...

Revenue sharing is the difference here... baseball doesn't have it... football does...

The NFL is far and away the most popular sport in the USA...
