The throws are into tight windows with the defender often withing a few inches of the ball.

That is one amateur aspect of Tona. He WILL THOW INTO DOUBLE AND TRIPLE COVERAGE. He is that flightly. It's not the game plan. No sane offensive coordinator will develop a game plan to not get people open and force the QB to thow into heavy coverage. Most sane QBs will thow the ball away. Not Tona, he will put it up and hope magic intercedes and he will be a hero. And often he's the goat.
Only Tona would get a pass after a 5-pick day. and it is disgusting.

I have not read through this entire topic yet, but I will add this: This is an argument that will never be won...by anyone. Some think he is "elite", while others think he is middle of the pack and then a few think he is more in the 20-22 range. Nobody is giving in, nobody is changing their mind.

A comment that I totally agree with..is the one about Phillip Rivers. He played better than his team and actually carried the team and made them better than they were. (paraphrase).

Rivers had a great year, but the Chargers were 8-7 going into the last game just like the Cowboys were.

With a better defense.

"He has a blind spot. His instincts are just average and his accuracy is not consistent enough given the amount of times they let him wing it and that’s what he does...wing it. His mental toughness is suspect and physically he is the danger zone given his two back surgeries."

So essentially, the kicker is, he's saying we have no offensive system in reality to cater towards Romo and Romo is just winging it and they let him wing it... great coaching guys...

Jerry Angelo has never been accused of being a quality personnel guy

According to this thread, he knows his stuff.

According to his track record, he's one of the worst GMs in NFL history.

Cas:

As I mentioned earlier this thread, you are absolutely right... Angelo's teams only managed six playoff games in his 10 years and only one miserable Superbowl appearance.

He absolutely should have been fired right?. Any GM with anything less than that over a 10 year period should be considered incompetent, right?

;)

Different circumstances. If Angelo owned the Bears he'd still be there, obviously. The situation in Dallas is unique in that regard. However - what happened to Lacewell? Jeff Ireland?

Angelo draft picks (especially 1st rounders) were pretty terrible -- although he did draft two possibly HOFers --Urlacher for sure, Briggs has a chance as the most dominate 4-3 OLB over a 10 year period. Only downside for Briggs is that 4-3 OLBs are generally underappreciated.

Angelo's offensive track record was borderline criminal, haha.

2001-2011

Cowboys: 4 playoff appearances
Bears: 4 playoff appearances

Cowboys: 5 seasons .500 or below
Bears: 6 seasons .500 or below

Cowboys: 1 playoff victory
Bears: 3 playoff victories

Seems pretty even to me. The only difference is that one guy got fired and the other still has his job.

You make note of the different circumstances, but the biggest difference between he and Jerry is that Jerry bought his way into his GM role while Angelo earned it.

It's funny that we, as arm chair coaches/gms, are still debating the credibility of a guy who was actually an NFL GM.

As a former GM he is far more qualified to analyze a QB's play than we are, which is what he's done here in his article.

A GM's success is not solely based on this ability either, so pointing out his short comings are hardly a valid detraction.

5 of their 7 losses were to the Dolphins, Texans, Raiders, Titans, and Commanders.

And they were 3-1 against NFC East opponents, their loss to the Commanders in OT. They also beat their division rival Raiders the second time. They played the Chiefs twice, whom they beat twice and Denver twice, outside of the playoffs winning once. Who did we beat with a winning record?

We beat one team with a winning record, they beat 5. They lost to 5 teams that were .500 or below, we lost to 2. How the two teams fared with their respective schedules is basically a wash. The Chargers were 13th in rushing yards and 11th in points allowed. Dallas was 24th and 26th.

Rivers didn't "carry his team" any more than Romo did. Probably less. If you're looking for a QB who carried his team, that would be Manning. Denver was 15th in rushing yards, 22nd in points allowed, and finished 3 games ahead of the Chargers.
