I gotta agree with Rack. This feels like right before the '06 draft all over again...
Carpenter was used as a DE in dime situations (maybe nickle too, I can't remember) at Ohio State. He can rush the passer.
He is lining up at DE here in T.C. as a situational rusher in the nickle. Why would Wade do that if Carpenter can't rush the passer?
As Rack already mentioned, he is also doing pass rushing drills with the OLBs.
It seems to me, that Wade likes Carpenter's versatility. By reading into what Wade's doing, it looks to me that Wade is keeping true to his word...that he wants Carpenter to be used like Vrable (and move around), which means ILB AND OLB.
You don't play OLB in Wade's scheme if you can't rush the passer.
What we do know, is Wade likes versatility in his pass rush and likes to send blitzes from anywhere. James hasn't shown to be a good pass rusher in the NFL yet. Ayodele was a tweener coming out of college, and theoretically, should be able to do a better job.
To me, it looks like we are going to play Carpenter inside a bit because of his quickness, ability to cover, and he is someone who can provide a pass rush from the ILB position.
And he'll get some burn at OLB too. Which, again, Wade would only want him to do that if he could provide pass rush abilities.
