I fear that with WP as HC, Jerra will be indulging himself with odd choices and drafts and strategies.

Four years is a long time to learn Jerra might have made a big mistake in hiring Wade Phillips.

Or, if Jerra has seen enough after a year or two, it will be expensive to unload him.

And most tellingly, it effectively closes the door on Cowher. Cowher would have taken this group to the Super Bowl by grit and determination. Something I just don't think WP has.

So far what I've seen from WP is a lot of poses to look as if he's in deep thought or is a football genius/enigma waiting to delight Cowboy fans with his innovations.

Wow. Four years. I have always thought Jerra did his best for the 'Boys and think he's the most proactive of all NFL coaches. But he hs shot himself in the foot, IMHO, with this WP who might be a yes man to every whimsy Jerra has.

WP, it seems, is best suited as a coordinator.
4 years!???

mein gott!

Several comments.

1. 3 yr with an option for a 4th is a very common contract for a new coach. Long enough not to be considered a lame duck, but short enough to make a change if the wheels come off.

2. WP was still under contract to Diego, therefore he could only be HC, not DC. This was the same boat Norv was in. It makes no sense for posters to say this guy or that guy would be better if hired as a coordinator when that possibility does not exist.

3. WP is a GREAT HIRE!!! Our D is going to be bad arse next year, no more of this read and react conservative crap Tuna and Zimmy been feeding us.

WP is a great DC...one of the best.

Is he a great HC? Does he know anything about running an Offense? How about Special Teams?

Anything in his past that points to him having success in the Playoffs?

There's a lot to be answered this season.

I think WP was the best available candidate, here is why.

1. He is very expeirenced. I think Jerry said in the PC that WP has either been HC or DC in over 400 NFL games, very impressive.

2. He has taken several teams to the playoffs, this after the team had a losing record the previous year if I remember correctly.

3. Players love to play of him, I have not heard 1 Charger player or any other players from around the league say anything bad about the guy.

4. His "phillups 34" is the exact opposite of what we have been playing. We will be one of the top sack teams next year, Phillups entire strategy is built around pressure on the QB.

If Romo can bounce back from "the bobble", and with the phillups 34 defense, we will be in the NFC Title game next year.

0-3 in the Playoffs

His last full-time stint as HC was in 2000, 6 Seasons ago.

He's a great DC.

I don't know that he can be a great HC.

Thats nice to hear, but Wade is not an OC.

From what everyone is saying, Wade isn't going to be running the offense, or special teams.

At least Bill P knew enough to call the plays.
Do you really think that a guy that has been as great a defensive coach as Wade Phillips DOESN'T understand offenses? I think he could call offensive plays; if he couldn't, how on earth would he call defensive plays to counter what the other team's O is doing?

The guy that first took playing calling out of the hands of the QB circa 1968 had spent his entire NFL life on the defensive side of the ball. His name was Tom Landry and he was very unsuccessful his first 5 years in the league. I think Wade has many qualities in common w/ Landry, and just because he's going to focus his coaching talents on the defense, doesn't mean he won't have any idea what Sparano & Garrett are talking about for the offense.

As the old Troy Aikman commercial used to say: "Get real!!"

I think Wade needs to be a HC more than a few seasons, and actually win a Playoff game, before he's even mentioned as being in the same company as Landry.

Please.

There are different types of lasagna, so you might want to clarify that.

Spaghetti is tasty for an average night at home.

Lasagna can be made exotic...veggie, chicken, beef, spinach... Yum :)

As a kid, I worked at an Italian restaurant way out in the middle of West Texas. So there I am, arms deep in tomato sauce and swishing those canned tomatos all day. We made great chicken cacciatore and pizza. Long hours. It was tough, man.
But on the positive side, hearing the Cowboys' games on the radio while I slaved away made it easy on a young college student. Albeit a junior college student. Technical junior college. Well, that brought back memories.:)

Cowher was never a realistic option for the Cowboys, just a bit of lousy luck or lousy timing... to get him on board this year would cost multiple, high draft picks, and screw that...

So what did you expect the Cowboys to do, play without a head coach this year, so that they could take a run at signing the Chin without having to fork over draft picks to do so next offseason??

Had Parcells stayed another season, you're right that Cowher would have been a perfect successor for him... but hey, maybe Wade will stink it out this year, the team will perform so badly that Jerry can fire him, and go get the coach of your dreams...

Yeah, Wade is such a "yes man" that he got fired up in Buffalo for REFUSING to fire a special teams coach that management ordered him to fire...

Attempting to label Wade Phillips a puppet for Jerry tells me you're sounding off without really knowing what you're talking about...

Yes. Our Defense should be much improved.

What about Special Teams, the Offense, and Head Coaching?

Wouldn't take much to give the Boys improved "Head Coaching"...

As for the questions about the special teams and offense, how 'bout you wait until the Boys fill out their coaching staffs, and show us some clue as to what direction they're planning on heading in their offseason moves, before we try to speculate about that??

He likes to tell folks how Shannon Sharpe had his two best seasons when Wade was coaching him, and how Eric Moulds also had his two best seasons playing for Wade...

Sounds like he has some idea how to get the ball in the hands of his playmakers, wouldn't you say??

Which would mean something, if he'd ever had a roster as talented as the one he's taking over...

He's a great DC.

I don't know that he can be a great HC.

Which would be fine, except you seem to be taking it a BIT further than that... you seem to already be convinced that he CAN'T be a great HC, or really, even a good one...
