Phillips was brought in to fix the defense which essentially collapsed the last half of the season for a variety of reasons but the major reason was the lack of a pass rush. If we've got the necessary talent on defense to correct that problem or if it's necessary to bring in another player to do so, I'm hoping Phillips can find a way to put the right guy in the right place to make the necessary plays.
As for offense, Phillips isn't chopped liver. When he took over the Bills, I think they were something like 5-11 and he took them to 11-5 and another similar season in his 2nd season. Yes the wheels came off in his 3rd year, but his choices were Rob Johnson and whatshisname? So I think he does know a little about offense. But I'm depending on Soprano (who did much of the play calling for the Cowboys after Payton left and the guy Payton wanted to bring to NO as his OC) and a developing Jason Garrett to get the job done. Our offense isn't chopped liver and put up some big numbers even tho we all know our OL must be upgraded at RG & Adams also needs improve (but this is last year of his contract), Romo needs a little more help, etc.
But the big point is that if Phillips can get the defense going and Soprano/Garrett do the same with the offense (assume the necessary players in FA an the draft are brought in), we should do just fine cause I think we will play a little less conservative and maybe a lot more imaginative. Besides it will take Garrett (if he shows he is indeed the boy wonder JJ is counting on) at least 2 years to develop. If this team is doing as well as we all believe it can be, we will be pleased with our coaching staff with Phillips going out a winner and Jason Garrett or even Soprano in place to succeed him.
And by the way, if Jason Garrett shows he has the necessary stuff there is no way JJ lets him leave the Cowboys for another team while Phillips is still there. The reason is simply that JJ will give Garrett the size contract necessary to ensure he satisified remain one more season (if we that successfull) that he will be designated Phillips successor who after all is 59/60already. So stop worrying and at least wait til we see who Phillips brings in to fill out his coaching staff.
