The Dallas Cowboys will not hire a replacement for Bill Parcells until at least Wednesday, and the search for the seventh coach in franchise history will likely stretch to the end of the week, team owner Jerry Jones told ESPN's Ed Werder on Monday.

The delay comes in part because the Cowboys want to comply with league rules prohibiting tampering. Identifying prospective interview subjects before obtaining permission to speak with them can be interpreted as a violation of the rules and result in forfeiture of draft choices. Jones, then, would not reveal candidates he still wants to interview. ESPN's Chris Mortensen confirmed Sunday morning, however, that Jones will interview Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera and Colts assistant head coach Jim Caldwell.

Some around the league have told Werder that they believe the Cowboys have already decided to hire Norv Turner but that Jones is deliberating keeping the position vacant so he can interview Rivera, who is under exclusive contract to the Bears for another two weeks even though the season has concluded.

Under the rules, the Bears cannot prevent the Cowboys from interviewing Rivera for their head-coaching position but could restrict him from discussing a lateral move to Dallas as defensive coordinator.

During Super Bowl week, Rivera conceded he would consider the lateral move to Dallas to enhance his future opportunities to become a head coach because of the perception that Chicago's success on defense is the work of head coach Lovie Smith. The Bears have also acknowledged that they will have to substantially improve Smith's contract, which is the NFL's lowest for a head coach, and that they probably will not be able to compete financially with the Cowboys should they decide to pursue Rivera.

Rivera returned to Chicago with the Bears following the Super Bowl and told Werder that it is his understanding that the Cowboys are seeking permission to interview him for their head coaching vacancy. He considers that process a formality and expects to interview in Dallas within the next two days.

Jones declined to confirm that he has asked the Colts for permission to interview Caldwell.

Meanwhile, Turner spent much of Super Bowl weekend in Miami with Jones and other Cowboys officials. He remains the front-runner for the job.

Maybe we can hire Zimmer back if we're looking for a non-3-4 cover-2 guy.

Word is that San Diego is looking at Cottrell (sp?)...they will be sticking with their 3-4.

He didn't have to say anything, but he opened his mouth on both occassions TO THE MEDIA.

If he didn't want to people to think we were interviewing him as DC he should have ****.

He played Dallas DC gig as leverage in negotiations with the Bears.

Pay attention.

If he was playing the "I will consider a lateral move" comment in negotiations with the Bears that is all well and good. But for you to expect him to come to the interview to the Cowboys for the HC position and say I will be happy to take the DC position that is just silly and would be stupid on his part when he wants to be a head coach.

I believe the media called him and asked him those questions. Lets see, he could have just shot himself in the foot and said I will only be Head coach then, or he could have said "no comment" or he could have said what he did.

The fact is, the Bears were never going to pay top dollar to Rivera AND Lovie and Rivera was the one who was let walk. No matter how he played his hand I think it would not have changed a thing.

And, by the way, no where in the article you posted does it say that Rivera said he would not consider being the DC in his private daylong conversation with Jones so don't make stuff up.

What better way for a D-coord to improve his stock -- come to Dallas, show you can work in either 4-3 or 3-4 situation.......

Except that the head coach has stated, "I will be running the defense."

Why would hiring a DC stop him from running it?

No, I'm just saying that wouldn't be a great situation for Rivera if he wanted to "get out from under the shadow" of his head coach.

When asked his chances of becoming defensive coordinator, Rivera said: "I am here to discuss being the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys."

And, that was what he was THERE for was it not? Anything else would be in violation of league rules as Chicago had til the 20th to renegotiate with
him.

Pay attention.

"No comment", would make it sound like they talked about it. "Good", would make it sound like they talked about it. Saying, "I am here to discuss being the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys." was exactly what he should have said to the media.

No matter what was discussed.

What did he do wrong again?

Where again did he say he would not consider taking the job as the Cowboys DC? He never said that.

What would he bring to the table in a D he has no experience in?
He has no chance of learning or bringing anything valuable right? He's basically one of those toy chimps that bangs the cymbals together and grins?

Thanks for setting me straight.

Why answer a question with question?

What would he bring to the table in a 3-4 D?

After that, don't forget to take your Midol.

The toy chimp would be you.

That is not an answer.

I think his question was reasonable. We can speculate on how much the cover-2 was Lovie's bag, and how much it was Rivera's, but we can't state definitively that Rivera would be more comfortable running things like Jim Johnson.

What would Rivera bring to the Phillips 3-4 except an expensive DC who only has coordinator experience in a defense we JUST tried to run here, but failed miserably?

Cause and effect.

One post said - in effect - "That is a stupid idea."

The other said - "You are a woman with PMS."

There's a big difference.

Rivera would be worthless here. He would be a guy staying out of the HC's way while the HC ran the defense...again.
