It really could if you look at this draft class and the projections right now. The Cowboys sitting at 27 would probably have to reach for a DE if they were set on taking one regardless. I certainly don't want to trade up either. Now that would be truly going all in and abandoning building through the draft if you're packaging picks to get a pass rusher early.

Or they could end up with a good player like Owamagbe Odighizuwa, who might be a good player but could turn out to be another 8 sack a year guy like Greg Ellis, solid but unspectacular.

I see issues on offense. They aren't big problems right now but they could be in the near future. So I'm keeping an open mind to offense this offseason while it seems most fans have a defense or bust mentality.

They certainly need to do something at RT, and who knows what the future holds for Leary at LG?

I see 1 big free agent signing. It will probably be a DE, but could be a DT. A DT like Suh would make the DEs much better.

This is my thought as well.

I much prefer (and value) elite push up the middle verses extra giddy up on the edges.

I think a big signing (like Hardy) would give you a 2 to 3 year window, rather than just one year. But when Romo goes, so do the chances for a championship, so I do everything in my power to make that happen now.

Signing lesser players will get you lesser results.

For me, Hardy is the prize, a guy like Sheard a consolation prize, measuring results accordingly.

We do not know what will happen after Romo, I go based on comments after the season was done when Jones was asked about FA and what he said lead me to believe they are not going to alter course in how they acquire talent. Big money FA never tend to live up to the big bucks you pay out. The market tends to over price itself where guys never are able to live up to the deal so you end up stuck with big bucks and modest results.

We have to kick the tires on the best pass rushers out there, at least. I agree we shouldn't massively overpay for one, but if we're fairly sure a guy's both a huge talent and a fit for our system, I can see us stretching our normal MO and being fairly aggressive in brining him in. There really aren't good options for improving our pass rush available elsewhere, and it's not like the DL roster has a ton of potential that's just been untapped.

That's why a guy like Hardy makes some sense, because he's both an explosive player, a scheme fit, and there are good reasons to believe not a lot of teams are going to pony up with a huge long-term deal for him given the risks involved. In a short-term scenario, Dallas with a bit of cap room to maneuver and the attention it gets and the opportunity to win in the short term that it presents suddenly becomes one of the most attractive destinations in the league for a guy in need of some reputation rehabilitation.

Who other than Hardy? I don't see no big name pass rusher I see some guys I would not mind getting at a reasonable price but I sure as heck do not want to spend big. If Dallas can get Hardy on a good deal great but paying this guy big money I would not do it. I know some will say with the baggage he has he will not be able to get a large payout and they maybe right and if that is the case then why would I want Dallas being the team who did go out and pay out big when no one else would?

We do not know what will happen after Romo,

Since I see a Brandon Weeden instead of an Aaron Rodgers waiting in the wings right now, I can venture an educated guess.

I think the results with proven pass rushers differ. Going back to Reggie White to Green Bay, I think proven pass rushers make for good investments.

And here are some quotes from Jerry Jones that look to refute your belief:

I don't get it. Thought this was a National Holiday but nothing on my calendar. One of you guys who have Union affiliation should contact your Union Rep on this thing. Help us all out!

and outside of Hardy who would you throw big money at? I would not mind seeing Dallas make an offer to him but would not getting into a big bidding war for him. I think there are some guys we can get at a good value who may not produce 10 to 15 sacks a season but are improvements on what we currently have.

As for the future I said nothing of Weeden and Dallas does expect Romo to be here for the nest 4 to 5 years their words not mine. Now if they feel he will be there that long then their plans are based on that not fans 1 to 2 year window. Now are you basing your view or theirs?

Nobody. He's the one. Everything else is a consolation prize. And nobody is going to sell me on a Jabaal Sheard being anywhere close. You either 'win' by getting Hardy, or you 'lose' and settle for someone else and try to convince yourself you can get by.

I think there are some guys we can get at a good value who may not produce 10 to 15 sacks a season but are improvements on what we currently have.

It's not hard to improve over this year's version of Selvie, or the sacks Spencer put up, but that is the lowest of limbo bars when it comes to standards. That's why getting a top pass rusher is such a necessity. But you can get two mediocre players and then wonder why you still can't get it done, or you can use the money for the best available and be sure. This defense needs a 10 to 15 sacks guy.

My views, as I disagree with the 4-5 years of Romo thing. That's a recipe for disaster I don't subscribe to. I think the window is 3 years. And as I showed you in that link I attached, Jerry himself said he was prepared to be big players in free agency.

I would take that one shot on the big name, big money, big production guy and then be out of the free agent hunt afterwards.

I don't think this season depends on getting Hardy or not. As for your view of Romo not being here fine but it is one that the Cowboys have so it changes how you do think based on those view points. If you were running things then that view point would actually matter.

Jerry has said that
Do the Cowboys have the capability to be major players in free agency? “Yes,” he said. “Yes we are.”
Does he want to be active in free agency?
“That’s a very good question,” he said. “I’d love to have the opportunity to improve that pass rush in the range of something that we could afford and make sense logically.”

To me that does not sound like a guy ready to throw a Demarcus Ware contract at a player

Hardy and JPP were the two I had been considering there, though JPP is getting tagged. Fairly, maybe. McPhee moves into that category for me if he gets anywhere near his asking price. But, yeah, Hardy makes the most sense.

As good as he is, I could easily believe no team is going to risk a long-term deal for Hardy. That doesn't mean he won't get huge money. It'll basically be in the form of a near-franchise amount for a year or two with a giant club option after that. Something that puts cash in his pocket and lets him stay on the straight and narrow for the longer-term payday while he's still ~28 years old. If the team that drafts you is not going to pony up long term as good as Greg Hardy is, that's a pretty good indication that many teams would not take that risk. There's always the crazy outliers (I'm looking at you, Redsk*ns) who take stupid risks now and then, but I don't think that list of crazies will be all that long. If there's not a candidate for a crazy contract out there, Dallas becomes the frontrunner, or nearly so, in that sweepstakes.

That's assuming, of course, that we've done our diligence and we actually want him on the team.

It seems Dallas is the front runner for all players. lol I would make an offer I would not risk a lot on Hardy. Dallas has some key FA to deal with of their own and I would not be shocked to see guys like a Derrick Morgan or a Brandon Graham signed are they primer pass rushers? No they are good solid players you can get at a good value. I think outside of moves like that they will continue to work the draft.

You're referring to AD? I think we legitimately are front runners for any good player at RB or DE, since those are currently two huge open needs. We're a winning team with the appearance of being on the rise with a win-now mentality and an owner who's demonstrated he can and will sell the farm when he wants to. And we take chances on troubled players. That pretty much moves us up to the top of the list in these cases.

I agree, though, that the more likely plan has us taking longer shots or incremental upgrade like Langford or maybe Orakpo and continuing to build through the draft. A guy like Hardy is the equivalent of the Haley trade...you take advantage of that situation if it really presents itself, but you don't mess up your team's cap position to make it happen if it doesn't come to you. Better to play the long odds because we can upgrade 3-4 DL positions pretty readily and affordably, otherwise.

AD is another matter entirely, but it's only an issue if he's A. available as a VFA and B. you still have an opening at RB. If that happens, though, I think Jerry overpays for him Terrell Owens-style and Jason and Stephen just have to deal with it. But that's a fairly unlikely circumstance yet and just my hunch, anyway.

It matters as much as your opinion does.

Well it did to both me and Jon Machota, the article's author, so youd be in the minority on that.

I disagree. I think 1st dallas will let Murray hit the FA market and based on that they will look to make him an offer. If he chooses to leave I think AD could come here but it will not be for a high price. I think Jerry believes in what they have been doing to get things back in order and what has made us competitive and I don't see that changing. Based on some views on NFL network Dallas is not even a team looking at Hardy while teams like Cinncinnati, Raiders and Falcons are better fits. Do I think NFL Network knows all? Of course not and I would not be surprised to see Dallas make an offer to Hardy I just do not see Dallas spending big on him.

it is not my opinion on Romo it is however the opinion the Cowboys are giving. You can sit there and say well I think he will be here 1 or 2 years and you may be right I don't know I do know that the Cowboys are saying they feel good with him for the next 4 to 5 and thus their plans will be in line with that view.

I'm not looking to be in the majority or minority, I think Dallas will be active in FA I also think the players they will likely go after are not the high priced FA. We will see what happens
