Franchise Tag Day

McCourty now available.

I like the way Wilcox is progressing, but I don't think he'll be much of an upgrade over Church. If we really believe the window is open now, then Dallas needs to make a run at McCourty. Obviously, they would also need to sure up the DL in addition to this.

You shouldn't. AP are his initials. It's as simple as that. It's an abbreviation not a nickname.

I don't like the "AD" nickname and don't like typing Adrian Peterson out so its AP. Didnt realize we had to address players by their government name or "official" nickname on a forum lol.

AP is just fine.
Anytime you use someone initials it's always fine.

AD is fine too, but that is nickname...whereas AP is actually the guys real initials.
Not that I care either way....

Guess the Pats thought so too.

I wonder if a deal is close. He will be highly sought after if he hits FA, which if I'm his agent I'm telling him he should do unless the Patriots fully meet his demands. That would seem highly unlikely or it wouldn't have reached this point. Would like for the Cowboys to check in on him if the upper tier of DE doesnt appeal to them.

McCourty will likely stay in NE. But if he came here, he would be the best FS we have had in several years.

Since I see a Brandon Weeden instead of an Aaron Rodgers waiting in the wings right now, I can venture an educated guess.

I think the results with proven pass rushers differ. Going back to Reggie White to Green Bay, I think proven pass rushers make for good investments.

And here are some quotes from Jerry Jones that look to refute your belief:

http://cowboysblog.***BANNED-URL***...adding-pass-rusher-among-top-priorities.html/

During an interview with SiriusXM NFL radio, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team was more likely to slow-play the market, in hopes of finding some bargains after the first wave like they did last year in defensive end Jeremy Mincey.
“I don’t know if active is a good word,” Jones said, via Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News. “I think active can get you in trouble in free agency. I think you have to be efficient and look for your values, and you can do good things.
“We did it last year with a player like Mincey where we got a lot of great value out of him. But at the same time, we’ve been in situations where you have to pay too much for players. You got to be very careful there. We’re certainly going to be that way. We’re going to look to be efficient. If that proves to be productive then that would be good.”

Wonder if Eagles make a run at McCourty, now that they have cleared up quite a bit more cap room with McCoy trade.

Who do all of you think gets the tag today?

My list includes:

Dez Bryant (of course, barring an 11th hour deal being worked out)

Demaryius Thomas WR Broncos

Justin Houston LB Chiefs

Devin McCourty S Patriots

Jason Pierre-Paul DE Giants

Anyone else have any they think I've missed?

Jason Pierre-Paul DE Giants would have been too expensive for Cowboys, but would have addressed a big need.

Ugh! Thanks for that bit of 'good news'.

As I told you before that is what I had heard soon after the season was over so my expectation are that Dallas is not looking to make a big splash in FA. What they have been doing has worked and I expect it will continue to work. I'm not big on getting these high priced players that do not live up to the billing. Suh may be great but given the money he will demand he is not worth it. Hardy is a very good player with a lot of issues I don't want to put big money in his pocket and have concerns over his off the field antics that do cost teams when those players start missing time. I think there are some guys who Dallas can get at a good price and be able to give us more production in pass rushing outside of that look to the draft hell that is where Suh came from that is where Hardy came from and every other player out there. The draft is the key not high priced FA

Yes, the AD nickname dumb, IMO.

I agree in most respects, but history shows that free agent pass rushers produce and provide solid return on investment.

Agreed. I have no interest in getting into that bidding war.

Hardy is a very good player with a lot of issues I don't want to put big money in his pocket and have concerns over his off the field antics that do cost teams when those players start missing time.

I think that anyone who signs him will have plenty of behavioral clauses in the contract to protect themselves.

I don't see it. You end up paying close to the same for Sheard and Paea and get much less in terms of results. You get what you pay for.

And none of those guys produced straight out of college. Even JJ Watt, the best defensive lineman in the game produced just 5 sacks as a rookie. Rookies just do not produce at that position and I don't think that this team - with this quarterback - can afford to wait.

I'm hoping for otherwise this year.

I believe that signing a true impact pass rusher like Greg Hardy can dramatically improve this entire defense, thereby getting this team to Super Bowl level. And I don't feel that going the bargain route will accomplish the same thing.

It would cost a lot and require some pains down the road, but I feel many of those pains are inevitable. I would at least like a shot at a championship first.

I remember when Dallas got Charles Haley and gave the Cowboys that elite pass:hammer: rusher they needed to win Super Bowl.

Yeah, that worked out pretty well.

And the Packers were happy with that Reggie White thing too, and likely Peppers last year too.

I wonder what the Cowboys would have done last year with Peppers ? Would he have been our Haley to put the Cowboys back to a Super Bowl victory?

Dallas has gotten more than they paid for with guys they have brought in without paying the over pricing we see with top FA.
