Based on how things are shaping up, and this is very very early for both players and teams, Frederick is looking like he was the absolute right choice for us. He is taking over the OL play from a brain and brawn standpoint, QB'ing the OL which will make whomever else we plug in next to him better. The OL was easily the #1 reason we didn't make the playoffs the last two years and our biggest team weakness. If Frederick continues his ascension, even if its not to PB-level just the trajectory it appears to be on, it looks like he's going to be a really solid starter for us for a long time. When all it said and done a few years from now, other than rare cases like Greg Ellis over Randy Moss, few teams care about whom they passed over if they still ended up with a really great player that helped their team for a long time. I think that would be a worst-case scenario for us in this case....that we got a really great player that fit our biggest need and passed up maybe a great DL player (if Floyd becomes that). If Frederick anchors our OL for the next 10 years, I will truly not care if Floyd becomes a HOF'er. I would still say Frederick was the better pick for us at the time....and as an added bonus we got an additional WR loaded with potential. The other part of this equation that cannot be understated is that when you compare our weaknesses at their respective positions we had Cook, Costa, and Berny (none of which we very good) at C while on the DL, (which was definitely somewhat of a need too) we had Hatcher and Ratliff (both of whom are pretty good when healthy).

Draft is done and over with only thing I want to see is Frederick go out there and help this team win games. What Floyd does or doesn't do really does not matter. You can get sore neck looking backwards all the time. lol

Here's the one aspect I don't understand -- people have said that the Cowboys board was formed solely by the scouts based on talent, thereby prohibiting need to come into play twice (once in forming the board, and again during selection), and the coaches retained veto power

That's all well and good, but if that's the case, why were other prospects left off due to their lack of fit, e.g. Larry Warford?

Because what some are saying is not true.
Plain and simple.
That board was created by the scouts and coaching staff. They were huddled up late hours for weeks before the draft tweaking that thing.

I have no idea why people feel obligated to make stuff up.
Bottomline....
They decided that Oline was an overwhelming need so, even though they had a player or two with good value at 17, they thought it better to get what they thought was just about as good of a "value" by dropping down to 31 and getting both a Olineman and an extra 3rd round pick for their trouble.

We can agree or disagee with what the real value here was. I thought it was not ideal value--but it sounds like option were limited.
The end result may end up being great anyway.

A true violation of their board would have been to stay put at 17 and reach for Frederick or another Olineman in that spot. Instead, they tried to match value by getting pick 31 and 74 for 17.

I agree. I do think the Cowboys had targeted a couple of players in the draft but when they fell Dallas had to adjust. One thing for sure this past draft saw more OL players selected in rd 1 than ever before.
