Just curious, are you a Longhorns fan?

Used to be, but stopped keeping up with Texas when I started working a lot of hours.

I still remember Orakpo though and he was an animal. Not quite sure what happened to Michael Huff. I thought he was going to be the next great FS and he has been anything but that.

I don't think Orakpo is going to break the bank like Hatcher did. I think Orakpo gets something like a 3 year 15 million dollar deal when its all said and done. Unlike Melton he produced a lot of years and will get more money up front but because of his three chest tears in his pecs, I don't think he will get anywhere close to being paid like a top Dlineman. Make no mistake about it, when healthy Orakpo is a game changer. I would be willing to bring him home to Texas for a midlevel free agent contract but nothing too outlandish.
I don't see any team giving him significant guaranteed money if any at all. His career could be overdue to injuries.

I never suggested Hardy wanted to switch schemes, I did suggest he could rush the passer in any scheme and that he wants to get paid a lot of money.
Feel free to argue those points.

15m in salary by NFL standard is absolutely nothing. And to be clear Hardy has NOT made 15m. He is lucky to have pocketed 5 or 6m.
If you think he is liable to take a low money deal to play for a contender you are dreaming.
He wants 15m a YEAR.

Hardy was not always considered a good guy. He was a wrong side of the tracks kid pulled out of a bad situation that followed Michael Oher around to High school then college to save him from trouble. The assault was an actual conviction. While the woman in question may be all of those things you accuse she was also very much assaulted and reported it at the time. Hardy is very fortunate these things have went away. There was MORE than one witness who detailed a number of troubling accusations including having assault rifles in the room during a number of domestic altercations. Again this was a conviction that was merely overturned after the woman no showed a year later.

Bottom line is Hardy is probably both too expensive and too much a character risk for Dallas to mess with him at all.
That is just reality.

You should take that Texas avatar down if you're going to make guns an issue.

I wouldn't have a problem giving Orakpo a shot as a reclamation project. But not for 5 million a year.

you are posting insipid garbage.

i am speculating (about public record evidence) yet you are putting forth that the victim was coked up all the time? good grief man.

If its "insipid garbage" to post that Hardy's accuser was on coke that night, why did Hardy's accuser testify under oath at the hearing that she was on coke that night?

Hardy’s accuser admitted to using cocaine the night of the attack, and when defense attorneys asked her about a previous car accident she was in in which police found marijuana on the scene, she replied: “The weed flew out of my car.”

And when defense attorneys asked Holder how she came through an assault from a player the size of Hardy “without breaking a fingernail,” she replied: “Uh, I did break a fingernail, a toenail.”

Orakpo played mostly as a 4-3 end. His production dropped when he was asked to play OLB in the 3-4.

I know he played 4-3 in college, but I think projecting 4-3 DE to NFL is much harder than 3-4 OLBs. when orakpo was healthy he produced as a 3-4 OLB. its just that he has been injured often. so I am not sure how he would project to a 4-3 DE, and how he would deal with injuries....

I would be much less concerned about him transitioning to the 4-3 than I would be concerned with his injury issues. When healthy he was a really powerful 3-4 OLB. He's not one of those thinly built 3-4 OLBs that we often see.

I think what you'll see is the team add 2-3 more Mincey types along the DL. No idea who those names are but definite upgrades over the guys they likely replace(Selvie/Spencer/Hayden). Don't think they even entertain signing premier FAs like Suh, JPP, Hardy etc....not saying I agree with this approach but it's what we will see IMO. They'll use the draft to supplement the front 4 rotation as well.

I think they like the young building blocks they have and will spend the bulk of their available cap $ to re-sign Bryant, Murray and McClain.

There is a big range between Mincey's contract (2 years, 3M total) and Suh's contract (80M+).

Any thoughts on where some of the upcoming FA's are going to end up?

I'm thinking Sheard ends up with a Mincey kind of deal.

Fairly? I'm thinking about 5mil per year.

Paea? I'm thinking about 4mil per year.

Sounds about right. Sheard will could get 3M per which would be double Mincey's contract.

Hardy is the biggest wildcard. He and Suh are the top 2 talents, IMO, but how much will Hardy's off-field issue keep his price down?

Yeah, what Hardy is going to get... who knows? Could be a one year deal for say $8 mil or a 5 year deal for $75 mil.

True. My point is we'll see 2 maybe 3 DL signings in Mincey's contract ballpark. When I say that, I mean contracts totaling 10-12 million max over 2-3 years. Not the 80, 50 or even 20 mil contracts you'll see guys signing on the first 2 days of free agency. I believe the thinking will be to upgrade the Selvies, Haydens and Spencers on the cheap, which won't be too difficult, and continue to attack along the DL in numbers. Additionally I bet we'll see at least 2 of the first 4 draft picks be DL. So while we may not see that one premier DL addition everyone hopes for, the overall talent level of the DL will still be much improved with better depth.

Bryant, Murray and McClain I believe are the priorities and will be back. Maybe a solid CB as well.

Maybe Jerry can use his legendary salesmanship and charm to convince ALL of the prime FAs to take ONE year $1M deals, get their rings, then cash in the following season. Imagine all of these guys with our current offense:

Suh
Hardy
JPP
Iupati
Bulaga
McCourty
Hughes
Paea
Cromartie

Before anyone scoffs, want to point out that Debartolo did something very similar when he bought Steve Young a Lombardi in '94.

The only two free agents I'm interested in are Stephen Paea and Terrance Knighton.

Yes, that's an interesting name. He was a 3-4 OLB for the Titans. He is listed at 6-3, 261. He has been consistent:

Year, Starts, Sacks
2014, 16, 6.5
2013, 14, 6
2012, 16, 6.5
2011, 10, 2.5
2010, 0, 1.5

Also seems to be a RKG from most accounts. Think he's better suited as an end in the 4-3 than the 3-4. 34 1/2 arm length.
