Twitter: Free Retiring***Merged***

I think a combination of Chaz and Cleary will be better than Free. Could even be a platoon like Parnell and Free, if necessary. Then, draft a RT late.
No. A platoon would be a disaster with those two.

And drafting a OT "late" in a bad draft like this one is for them is wasting a pick.

All the losses so far are players who should have long ago been upgraded but they held onto them. I like how things are going. They are now forced to seek upgrades. They may not get them all in one offseason but a few years from now, we should have better DBs, better DEs, and a better RT. Leary is of course the exception.

There's a longer-term plan being implemented. Anyone who thought we had a great shot at a title next year was not being realistic.

$1 million of that you are counting as bonus was part of restructuring so that was pay he was going to get as salary already and they did it for cap reasons. There is only $1.5 that is originally from his bonus when signing the contract.

It's still counted as a signing bonus.

It doesn't matter if it's the initial bonus upon signing the contract, a planned restructure in a following season or a spur of the moment decision to create needed cap space.

Whenever a player retires, his team has the right to be re-paid all bonus money in the remaining years of the contract.

Dallas probably wont go after the money, but they do have the legal right.

The only time I remember them doing so was with Jay Ratliff. The case eventually got settled but I never heard a peep about the financials.

This would not have made them sign Leary. They knew a few weeks ago that Free could retire. They hoped to get 1 more year out of him. With the retirement, they get $5 million of cap relief. Cleary will be new RT.

But another reminder of the missed 2016 opportunity. There will be too much change on both sides of ball to replicate this past season.
