I still see them drafting OL maybe 4th round on in draft and that would give them few years to groom replacements. Now onto the Lbs.

I agree that it wouldn't hurt to get a player to groom, whatever round the value fits the pick.

As far as the linebackers go, I'm somewhat afraid that Dallas' plan is going to end up being Durant, Lee and Hitchens with Rivers competing for a spot. I don't think that starting lineup is necessarily bad, but I think it's shaky with the health issues three of those four guys have had.

What's it going to be then, eh?

The market right now for a "younger" RT is probably what Derek Newton signed for:
5-Year, $26.5M Deal With $10M guaranteed.

Anyone feel like marrying Parnell like that?

He must've been waiting for Free to set the floor.

Obviously, the cap charge will be lower in year 1. The first year cap hit is always lower than the contract average.

Is this another attempt to state the obvious and then claim you were right about something?

The cap hit for Free will actually be closer to 7m when you count the dead money from his old deal.

And to add to that...Newton has 46 starts...vs Parnell's 9 starts.

Before Weems got hurt in training camp, I recall that Weems and Parnell were battling for the backup T spot in OTAs and there was thought that if Weems could win the job, Parnell could be traded.

Free probably looked at it as seven million more guaranteed in the bank since he is lock to make the roster. He could get cut next year and it would still not be that big a deal.

Haven't seen the deets yet but it could be

4.5m signing bonus 6m guaranteed
1.5m
+ 1.5m= 3m cap hit
3m + 1.5m= 4.5m cap hit
6m + 1.5m= 7.5m cap hit

or

6m signing bonus
1m + 2m= 3m cap hit
3m + 2m= 5m cap hit
5m + 2m= 7m cap hit

So if he is cut along the way, its either a 1 year contract for 6M, a 2 year contract for 9M or if not, 3 years for 15MM. I was wrong in saying Parnell would be the guy resigned but if may very well be because Free was the cheaper option. Assuming Free stays healthy it works out well for both sides, Free gets a raise over last season and the Cowboys get the continuity they want and a lower cap hit in 2015 - but aren't on the hook for a long term deal like the Bigg or Gurode had at one time.

The key now is Free needs to stay healthy.

Too funny

I wanted whoever signed for a 3m cap hit first. Free was quicker and wins the job.

That may be a big factor at the end of the day. Free is a better player (at the moment) and is the team leader, but Parnell may very well get a bigger contract soon.

And the people who are gloating over this to XWalker (not in fun like Asthma obviously) are the people who said Parnell wasn't capable of starting in the first place. I was wrong in that I thought Parnell would be the guy resigned, but XWalker won the board argument here in midseason when Parnell started and played fine.

I wanted Parnell by a small margin. I think if it comes together for him he can dominate. We have seen the best from Free and its good enough but not great. Keeping him is great for continuity and it seems the young guys look up to him. Either way its settled and we have one less problem.

Yup, I thought it was going to be Parnell but that was based on the thought that Parnell would command more money, not less. I thought Free would want an increase in salary, which he got, but would also want more years then he got in this deal.

The move all comes down to health. Free missed 40% of the games last season and has had two surgeries in the last year or so. That is a non-trivial amount of risk for the franchise unless we hit on a draft pick or Weems takes a big jump in performance.
