I love JJ and think he will have a big year this season .....

Just dissapointed in him making excuses ...... but like another poster said ..... there will be no excuses now ....... he had better have an outstanding season this year.

Oh I agree 100%, the excuses were out the door once Parcell's Lincoln left Valley Ranch...

Parcells had a real man love for Julius Jones, considering he passed on Steven Jackson and Kevin Jones to get him. He also publicly defended him time and time again. He defened him much more than his production really warranted. Everyone could plainly see that MB3 was out producing him.

The truth is that Julius Jones couldn't hold Curtis Martin/Joe Morris/Otis Anderson's jock strap.

Actually he tried to trade back in to the first rd to get Kevin Jones but couldn't. He wanted him along but settled for Julius.

I like Julius and like many others have said it's time to put up or shut up.

It looks like he is getting one more year to prove himself. I think it's mostly an excuse. Parcells didn't teach him to fall down on first contact. If he performs as poorly as he has for the last few years, the Cowboys *should* just let him go after this season. We have several draft choices next year to hopefully land something better. Even if it's trading for an existing player.

Problem I have is Jones needs to be point his finger at himself before he points it at others. Barber had no problem hitting the holes and watching Jones missing holes got to be old quickly. This is the NFL you can't just gain yardage when you have a hole big enough for a truck to go through you have sometimes make things happen on your own. Every other back that has been with BP has been able to do that yet Jones can't? I put that on Jones more than I would this cop out excuses of Blaming someone who is no longer around.
I can't remember how many times I've been told on this forum that I can't argue against stats, well the stats on JJ's career say blaming Parcells is nothing but BS.

Joe Morris could not hold his own jock strap his first three years in the league. He had 183 carries, 703 yards, averaged 3.84 ypc and scored 5 TDs. It was not until his 4th year in the league that he had a great season with 294 carries 1336 yards and 21 TDs. He had another great season the next year(1516 yds and 14 TDs) and followed it up with two good seasons. Four good years out of 8 played in a 10 year span. He did not play at all in 1989 and 1990 before finishing his career in Cleveland in 1991. He finisehd with 1411 carries 5585 yards, averaged 3.96 ypc and scored 50 TDs.

Hopefully, Julius will have similar type production in his 4th and 5th year in the league. I doubt he will score as many TDs, but he can get the yardage. I think he is close to being on par with Joe Morris and could be better.

Now Otis and Curtis are much better than Jones. That isn't even close.

Yes, it is weak to make excuses now. He just needs to play football.

JJ gained 4.2 YPC his rookie year and 4.1 last year. His rookie year he got hurt and missed 8 games, last year he missed none. I just don't see where Parcells screwed this guy up.

If you did not see the difference during that game than I don't know what else to tell you.

Not being rude but it was pretty obvious watching him this year.

This has become one of the great traditions of spring ... flowers bloom, grass grows green, weather warms, baseball season starts, concerts in the parks, people make excuses for Julius and predict next year will be his breakout year.

I'll put Jones and Spears in the same boat.

They say they wer 'shackled' or 'held back' by the coaching they got from Parcells?

Fine.

No problem.

I actually agree with both of them.

But this is their year to prove that on the field.

Both need to have great seasons to stay in Dallas.

Until then it's just talk.

:signmast: except the "agree with them" part

are we saying that if JJ used his "instincts" and was breaking off long runs BP would "hold him back" and say "see that pile of OL/LBs? run right into them"

lets get real here for a second people and use some common sense.

I think this is a little embarassing for both Spears and Jones. If you felt the shackles were on you, fine, then have a big year, but I really do not think you kick dirt on Parcells. The guy brought the Cowboys back to a point where they were relevant again. This is insecurity being exhibited by both of them if they feel they need to defend themselves through the media like they are. Shut up and play!!

That stuff about Jones being 'lazy' and sometimes 'unmotivated' seemed completely dead on accurate to me.

Jones best running comes when he is motivated, determined, and on a mission. See his rookie year and the Seattle game, when he dominated. He seems to have a mentality in those instances of 'I am not going down, everything I have is going into this run." When that happens, he is fantastic.

Unfortunately, he often doesn't seem to be that fiery, like last season. I don't think he is particularly weak when it comes to breaking tackles. Disinterested isn't the word, either. More of a matter of - he isn't putting every last thing he has into staying upright, and in the NFL, you have to.

If Jones could be motivated in everygame, he would look like his talent indicates. Unfortunately, it's all in the brain, not in the body.

Tony Dorsett came out last yr and said the same thing Jones just said, that he thought Parcells had kinda overcoached him and he wasnt running "reckless" enough...and that he was too concerned with not fumbling the ball rather than running aggressive like he did as a rookie...anybody that thinks he ran the same way lasy yr and the yr before as the last half of his rookie yr is out of their mind...there IS a difference

I really think Jones is gonna have a big yr this yr

I hope that Jones "lights it up" and goes to the pro bowl this year, but I am not currently a Julius Jones fan. I think these "excuses" are just that, excuses. I am not going to say that it isn't possible that Parcells' coaching style could have affected Jones, to some degree, but putting Jones' failure to achieve on Parcells is pretty weak.

Spears development and Julius Jones running have been subjects of endless discussions on this board. Most believe Spears was held back by Parcells 3-4 scheme & some of us believe Parcells also overcoached Jones cause he sure isn't the same explosive back we saw in his rookie season. I just want that player back.

But do admit it would have been smarter for both of them to hold off saying anything about Parcells until their performance this year justifies their comments. But not surprised they didn't given their youth & public criticism. It's also possible others on this team feel the same way about their own performance re Parcells. Ware never criticized Parcells but did make it clear he excitedly looking forward to playing in Phillips 34 defensive scheme.

Can't wait unto season begins to find out just what kind of team we have. Maybe Spears doesn't shine but what if he does? Maybe Jones is the same back we saw in his first season, but maybe he'sa the same Jones of the last 2season. We'll sure know before the season ends.

I like Julius, hope he has a great year next year. But Parcells coaching didn't hurt Curtis Martin.

The offseason is for chirping. And alot of folks have done it. So, ya know, we'll see.

Exactly.

Also, when did Parcells' coaching effect Barber? Barber would still cutback, change directions, and use his instincts. Julius is copping out.

Yeah it's useless man, let people think what they want. I believe Julius Jones will get 1,400 yards this year and 10 TD's..

I wish players would just shut up and play, but I agree with Brain. Something changed between Julius' first and second year, and we know that Parcells coached him to run differently. It's not an excuse and I wish JJ had just gone out and shown us instead of bashing his former coach, but I think Parcells played some part in Julius' decline in production. So Julius doesn't take to Parcells' style of coaching. Wade is the polar opposite. Julius has has a new coach and a season back up what he says.

Barber catches teams off guard and only is used basically in short yardage situations..

What I don't get is he had good games last season against Tenn, Hou, Wash, Car and in the playoff game. So evidently BP did not hurt him in those games but we are to believe that BP hurt him in all the other games.

I hope your right but I'm tired of guys giving excuses for their own play. Jones has had good games last season as well so what was the deal he did it his way in those game but BP held him back the rest of the time?

I'm glad we got JJ and Barber, compared to what was
here, lmao. The best thing for this team is to keep this combo
because it works, and maybe it gets even better.Parcells
problem was maybe he was too conservative in his overall
approach to the game, but that's his style.JJ needs to prove
he's the guy for the job..He looked too tenative out there.
Barber runs like a man running downhill without any
way of stopping himself.I like this kid,but lets see who really
deserves to start.
