Hmm, except for the three teams that were lining up for his services within hours of his release. Two of which had his former coaches on the team.

Or the team that is moving their Pro Bowl free safety to make a spot for him.

I guess I should just adopt the board mentality. "Duh, I've never heard of this Dwight Smith, so he must suck. Besides, we've got Berry-o who hits hard and Pat Watkins who is tall."

I know exactly who he is and have seen him play alot...he's average at best

again, some of you practice revisionist stats or history when it comes to come players...some of you act like this guy is an interception machine and he clearly isnt...everyone remembers the fluke Super Bowl from a few yrs back, but the fact is he averages less than 3 ints per season

the guys a punk thug, he just got released from a team that signed him to a long term deal one yr ago...as for "three teams lining up" to get him, there were apparently two teams that made an offer for him, and only one of those offered him a multi yr deal

Man, you REALLY love throwing those two words around ("punk", and "thug"), don't you??

It must be wonderful, to be above reproach, so that you can judge everybody else... but for the rest of us, your judgements get a little tiresome, given that you don't really know any of the players you're snarling about...

Here ya go from JJT...

Q: Why am I not hearing any buzz about Dwight Smith?

Eric Malnassy, Austin, Texas

TAYLOR: Simply put, the Cowboys don't want him. There's a reason he's going to be with his third team in three years. It's not like New Orleans has a bunch of great safeties on its roster. Maybe he's not that good anymore. The Cowboys expressed no interest in him when I checked earlier this week. They like what they have.

You see the Cowboys are happy with what they have on their roster... I knew they wouldn't want the guy because he's not very good and and we have the great Pat Watkins to take over the position here very soon.

For you folks that don't understand how to evaluate players, I'll be having a teleseminar on it here in the next two-weeks. "Mike Winicki's Instant Talent Evaluator"... The cost is only $399 for the 60 minute session. I have reserved a couple spots already (Thanks SuperP! I'm glad you finally found a credit card that would work! ;))

I certainly never said anything about him being an interception machine. He can, however, play free safety and corner. His coverage abilities are likely better than anyone on the roster now.

Average is better than anything Dallas has now. The cost was a little bit of nothing.

I am perpetually amazed at how people will whine about a position all offseason and when an opportunity presents itself to solve that position in a frugal manner, they are totally opposed to it.

I do agree that Dallas didn't show an interest in him. And I did say before that I think whatever they didn't like about him, Payton/Gibbs took to NO with them.

I am still baffled why people were so against even considering this. I heard fewer complaints about TO.

I havent whined about the position at all, in fact I believe the solution to the issue is on the roster...

I am "perpetually amazed" at how many people want thugs and losers ADDED to the team and think that it helps.....

its pretty obvious the Cowboy people running the team dont share your (and some others) high opinion of Dwight Smith, nor did the vast majority of the rest of the NFL...the guy is "just another guy", and on top of being "just another guy" he is a known trouble maker...no reason to have that here

When people say "he just averaged 3 picks a year", I have to laugh because it clearly indicates you don't know what you're talking about. As though 4 picks a year is pretty average year for a satey. Dwight Smith has had 16 INT's in the last 4 years. I challenge you to find 5 other safeties with more picks in that time span. C'mon ... it will be easy. Clearly 3 picks a year is just average. I'll even spot you Ed Reed.

To have 3 teams lining up to offer you a starting position a week before camp when rosters are set and cap money is tight clearly shows this guy is not thought of as a spare. That's three more teams that would line up to offer any of our safeties not named Roy Williams a starting spot, including our 5th round draft pick who is supposedly the first player in the history of the draft to be penalized for being just too athletically freakish. I'm loving that one.

well once he went for a 2 day visit there was no turning back.

why turn down the chance to get paid well in a cover 2 defense that u excelled in with TB and having your old coach Tomlin there?

Good point, plus I dont think Dallas would have offered a multi-year deal.

How many FS's can we actually name that are better than Smith?

Dawkins
Taylor....

It's not a distinguished group. And ours are certainly near the bottom of that barrel.

Dawkins has only averaged about 2 picks a season for the last 5 years. The most INT's he's ever had in a season is 4.

Clearly, he's mediocre. Maybe even below mediocre.

Hey, we wanted the guy, let us be bitter.

It doesn't help, when you've got a bunch of yahoos, claiming Smith isn't that good in the first place, based on absolutely nothing. Oh, except that he had a bad year playing a position he had never played and was undersized for. And he got released from his team, so he CAN'T be good. Nevermind that they have a glut of safeties, and no room for an expensive backup.

Plus, JJT says so.

Anyone that can work the word "yahoos" into a post is OK by me. :)

I am glad that you've come to respect JJT's power. Smart move on your part. ;)

well despite that, nobody else wanted him right? Kinda implies nobody else thinks he's better than what they have either..New Orleans has been trying to trade him for months as well, no takers

and apparently New Orleans beliesves they have at least a couple safeties better than him, because they just cut him
