It's a two way street. I doubt any of the people who wanted this guy would have defended him so much if anyone offered anything other than, "He got released, he can't be that good". I'm as hopeful as anyone for Watkins, but IMO, there couldn't have been anything wrong with this upgrade - we could have definitely handled that salary. It's like anything else on here - some people take one side, some take the other. Some use facts and reasoning, some don't.

Plus, there's really nothing else to talk about.:(

I'm not saying your wrong. The guy is a good player not a super star can't live without him type player. He played well in Tampa Bay surrounded by very good players did not do much in NO. It does not appear Dallas wanted the guy they and feel more confident in what we have over Smith and what ever problems they see with him. You guys get on Coleman yet he pulled down 11 ints in the last 4 years on a very poor Houston Texans team and we have some others who will compete for the job this year. Smith may have been a slight upgrade we will find out soon enough

There wouldn't have been anything slight about it.

Coleman isn't even in the running for FS, apparently - I didn't intend to bag on him.

I have high hopes for Watkins, but there's a good chance he won't be ready early on.

No, Smith's not a great player but he's a pretty good one and I don't think there's any question he would have been an upgrade over Davis and Coleman. I got a chance to see him living here in Tampa like I do, and he's just a better player than both of those guys, he just is.

It's not the end of the world but every year leading up to training camp it seems we stand pat at a position, or don't make a move to upgrade one more, that ends up holding us hostage that same year.

It's gets to be a harder sale for me every passing year at these same trouble spots to believe the old "they know something we don't" bit. But it's water under the bridge at this point so I'll just wish for the best, and hope that I'm wrong here about this being a mistake.

Cowboys website says different.

Parcells won't hesitate to throw Coleman in with the first-team defense. The veteran has started 101 games in his career, including 11 last year with the Texans.

Coleman, meanwhile, still must prove he has some gas in the tank. The 32-year-old showed some rust during the June mini-camp in a few one-on-one drills. He might be better suited for the safety position, where he can rely more on his instincts and experience.

I'm just going off the last thing I heard Parcells say. Which was that Coleman might come in on nickel sets, but was not in the running for starting FS.

If he can out play the others in training camp I have no doubt he will be given the oppertunity to earn the job. I can't say that I heard Bill say he was not in the running or that Coleman could earn a starting job. I do think it is Davis job to lose

What exactly does this prove? Nada. They don't mind the cap hit, what they do mind is paying expensive money for a backup.

Stop right there. His salary for this year was scheduled to be 1.2m, hardly huge dollars. They offered to give Keith Davis bonus and salary in 2006 of 2.1 m. Try again.

Houston took a cap hit to dump Aaron Glenn last summer because they wanted Phillip Buchanan to start and they didn't Glenn's contract on the payroll.

That's true but it's a ridiculous comparison. Aaron Glenn was due a 4m salary last year and had a cap # over 6m. Cutting him was a huge cap savings and money savings. Not the case with Smith.

In the end this came down to a comfortability factor. If he was such a bad guy, all of his former coaches wouldn't be bidding against each other for his services.

Maybe so. But based on the contract he got with Minny it appears those teams smelled a bargain more than comfort. The no bonus deal also gives the Vikings flexibility to cut him at the end of the year with no hit if they choose. It wouldn't have bothered me at all if we had done something similar. But it also doesn't bother me that we didn't.

Who is the backup? Coleman?
No, Coleman is a CB now, and we'll put him at S for the nickel. So if he can provide me a two position player, that provides me other options on game day bout who to suit up

This was what I was talking about. But that was before camp, so who knows. Coleman might be in the running.

per dallascowboys.com

Parcells said in June he expected Coleman to play some nickel cornerback, along with competing for the safety job.

The Answer has a bad feeling this move will come back to haunt us....we have been looking for a true FS for years and Smith would have elevated this secondary into the elite status.

Dumb move Jerry....Dumb move....and the price Minnesota got him for was more than affordable, probably could have got him for less if he wanted a chance to be on a superbowl contender....

~The Answer

You freaking know it will. It's truly amazing. Last year, we had a chance to grab Darren Sharper. All he does is go to Minnesota & get 9 ints. & go to the Pro-Bowl. Now, the same thing! When are we going to learn? I hope Smith & Sharper each have 10 ints. this year and each goes to the Pro-Bowl.

I'm sure even then Jerrah will have some stupid reason why it was still a good idea not to sign them.

I've been a Cowboys fan for 41 years, but sometimes I get tired rooting for a team with no sense when it comes to player personnel. We have yet to address our weakest link for going on 4 years & counting.

They must be planning on putting sharper at SS and letting Smith play FS, because Smith made a terrible SS as last year showed

He's better than any FS on our roster, and many of the FS's in the league.

That was never the question.

Obviously, something deterred our interest. I can't imagine what that something was, but I hope it was good. I knew we weren't getting him, my first post on the subject said as much. But I still can't come up with any decent reason why we wouldn't take an opportunity to make a significant upgrade, to a position that needs such an upgrade.

Baffling.

it was probably what Jerry Jones FREAKIN' told all of us already, that they are content to work with what they already have at FS

I wish most of you would actually listen to the coaches and management instead of trying to come up with your own hypothesis, GOSH! ;)

To have 3 teams lining up to offer you a starting position a week before camp when rosters are set and cap money is tight clearly shows this guy is not thought of as a spare.

and for those 3 teams, there are 29 teams who didn't even blink an eye

well despite that, nobody else wanted him right? Kinda implies nobody else thinks he's better than what they have either..New Orleans has been trying to trade him for months as well, no takers

and apparently New Orleans beliesves they have at least a couple safeties better than him, because they just cut him

David

what's lost in all of this is that Dwight Smith basically lost his job to Josh Bullocks, and last I heard, he wasn't exactly the Brian Dawkins of FSs...

this is what pisses me off, so BP and Jeff Ireland have done no right when it comes to personnel evaluations? just look at our roster, it's stacked w/ talent, for crying out loud people, we're talking about a FS!! Darren Sharper had 9 picks, and still the Vikes D was TERRIBLE!
