Whether he is correct depends on if he is right about the Cowboys targeting Witten 90 times over the season. If that’s true the Cowboys will take a step back at TE. But if, as is being reported, Witten only plays about 25 snaps a game, then Witten will not be the primary TE, and Carter will be wrong. Witten should not be the starter getting 90 targets, but as the #2 guy in a support role he would likely be an asset.
If Witten ends up being the #2 receiver, he definitely is going to get much more than 25 snaps per game, plus this definitely will hinder any progress and take away much needed gametime experience from Jarwin, Schultz and Rico. I don't see how this helps the younger TEs.

I'd dropped Rico like a hot potato. No need for 4 TEs. So we know Witten has a spot. I'd go with Jarwin and Swaim. Maybe Schultz if Swaim can't go. Rico is only good for jump balls and nothing else. No thanks. Experiment terminated.

Swaim is a free agent, plus he's always injured every season. I would rather keep Rico. Rico is still learning but he's taller, faster, stronger and more athletic than Swaim. Rico simply needs more game experience, but with Witten back, that's not going to help Jarwin, Schultz and Rico.

Without Witten, Rico didn't get any game time either. There is a reason why. Dude is a gimmick not a player. Sorry but a free agent Swaim is better than a tall, able Rico. He's one of those players which I think is too late to learn the game only picking up football in high school. He belongs on the basketball court not football field. My apologies to him but that's how I feel.

when your football team caters to older washed up players and players that are trouble makers your chances of winning a championship are pretty much nil dafting players that smoke and keeping around guys like the underwear bandit and guys like irving who are a total waste and coaches who have no idea then you see why the cowboys haven't won in over 23 years

If you think a guy can wake up and one morning be a different person you are delusional. That is the person he is and has been that way for 15 years.
Two words. Salary cap.

I don't see that it's impossible that he doesn't even make the team by the time the season rolls around.

And again, $3.5 million is excessive for a "role player", but this team has a terrible habit of overpaying them because they're "good guys".

It's a poor practice that needs to stop.
it’s not enough money to throw us into a salary cap crunch and it’s only one season. I don’t see the ongoing habit of this anyway. If your talking about Lee, his contract is 2-3 years old and he was playing at a high level when he signed it.

Read my post again. I wasn’t saying #2 receiver, I was saying #2 TE

Apparently Witten is getting 25 -30 snaps a game, that can change if he's effective and in shape. For this team that's half the total offensive snaps and 2/3's of the TE snaps. It makes sense. 2/3's a a TE because we utilize a TE about 80% of the time in our sets and Witten won't get all the snaps in those 1 TE sets but surely will get in on about all the 2 TE sets.

That doe's not mean 8-10 targets a game in the passing game as we run more than pass and rightfully so because we are built that way. So in saying that at 25 snaps 15 of those are running plays. So that's blocking. Out of 10 passing snaps he is going to get no more than 30% of the targets with Cooper out there, Gallup and Zeke out of the backfield.

I did not even mention the slot yet. So 3-4 targets in a pass happy game for us makes sense and him catching 2/3's of those targets make sense. You're looking at 30 - 40 catches max time 9 yards a catch. 3- 400 yard max season for Witt and Jarwin and Shultz will be getting some action as well.

Zeke is already saying welcome back coach so there's no leadership and player to player issue there. Believe me, Dak is happy Witten is back because he's gets his old security blanket playing where he knows where he's going to be.

Over reaction.

It appears to me you are. If you don’t think they need Witten that’s fine, but a one year contract somewhat above market value does not create a salary cap problem.

I'm on record saying the Cowboys will make this work and be better for it in 2019. The critics are wrong. Meet me at the Super Bowl in Florida to watch Jerry get handed that Lombardi Trophy once again. :flagwave:

Added to overpaying Sean Lee, Allen Hurns, and Tyrone Crawford? Yes it does. Very much so.

To the tune of $20 million.

That's the awful truth that some fans can't bear to face.

Witten had Dan Campbell teach him the ropes. Witten was his backup and he has said before it was a good experience. If these young TE's cannot learn from watching Witten then we need 82 back more than we know.

Great signing IMO.
