Hardy fills a gap for 2014.

Hardy gives Dallas flexibility with their 2015 1st round pick. They can go with a young DE to develop or they can go RB or DT or CB or S or really anywhere there's a need.

Hardy has a 1 year deal and Mincey's contract expires after the 2015 season. It means Dallas can build a young defense but have a couple of vets this season to help them along.

Unless they REALLY need him, I can't see a reason to retain him after 2015.

I love the deal that they signed...he should be playing like his hair is on fire...he gets paid, and then the decision is there....but, let's win the guy first and then see what it does for guys like Lawrence and Crawford to have him grabbing so much attention from the opposing team

The one year deal is a win win situation. If Hardy doesn't preform, we don't have him on the books.

He doesn't want to be locked in to a long term contract at $12,000,000 a year if he feels he can perform like a $17,000,000 a year pass rusher.

I promise you, if he performs and the Cowboys want to keep him, they will.

Agree that he can develop the other younger D players, and also should make our O Line better. Line him up in multiple positions to give each of them a taste of a premier pass rusher...

They aren't likely to face many of his caliber during the season, and should only get better from the experience.

A hidden value to signing him short or longer term.

It's simple, if Hardy is as great as I think Hardy will be, pay him, keep him, and win multiple Super Bowls.

Gotta build a team. Too many big contracts make that tough, especially now that the quarterback is in the twilight of his career.

It's a one year rental. Not worried about it. They needed to draft someone regardless.

And I think the NFL is ok with that. Gives fans the hopes that their team can rise from the ashes in this " parity over excellence" league

If he works out this year and the team is good the Cowboys will resign him. If the Cowboys go 8-8 he will walk.

People seem to be under the impression that his issues are going to go away after one year. They aren't going to. There will always be PR/moral issues with Greg Hardy.

The fact his issues aren't going to go away after one year is the reason the Cowboys aren't very likely to keep him past the 2015 season because they would have to commit to him with some guaranteed money. After being convicted of assault and likely having to serve a multi game suspension to start the 2015 season naturally Hardy will be on his best behavior this upcoming year. He would have to be seriously screwed up to get in trouble again this soon with so much attention on him. He'll be looking to cash in after the 2015 season and it's going to be a real gamble for anyone to commit a lot of money to him knowing that if he assaults another woman his NFL career will be over. Some seem to think if he stays on the straight and narrow for a year you're out of the woods with him and he's good to go for a Suh/Watt type deal. LOL

I think Romo's age and health will cause the Cowboys to take the risk if the team is good. If the Cowboys end up going 13-3 or 12-4 again they will mortgage the future to keep the train rolling 2-3 more years.

Normally the guaranteed money would be prohibitive I agree. But Hardy plays a position that is probably the most important on defense and among the top 3 most important on a football team (along with QB and LT). Under normal circumstances players capable of putting up 15 sacks in a season do not hit FA at all.

Teams with wider windows will avoid him at that amount of guaranteed money. Non-competitive teams without QBs will likely deem him not worth the PR hit. But Dallas, assuming they are still good, would make a lot of sense for both sides.

I think Hardy is going to want close to Suh money. Cap goes up next year and so do FA signings.

I'm still of the mindset that this is a one year rental and Dallas makes no attempts to sign him long term.

I agree, and will happily wave to him on his way out.

Indeed. Stud DE's are hard to find. If the guy puts out the numbers we're expecting, you pay the man. If he puts out big sacks, you pay the bucks. Do people really think we get to keep him for cheap forever?

He was barred from practices while on the list initially...until he got released all together.

Technically he's still on the exempt list, so I'm not sure what restrictions he has right now but I'd assume that he can't practice yet so that could be a potential problem with OTAs coming up.

Guys that have major injuries rehab all year long at team facilities most of the time. The exempt list is an entirely different animal.

I'm not saying that he's going to fizzle, but I'd imagine that Tyron Smith is going to manhandled him a little bit until he gets back into "football shape". (can't wait for the over reactions when that happens)

Sure but he was finally placed on the exempt list after week 1 because Goodell was incompetent and reactionary. He practiced for the 10 weeks prior.

Did I mention I cannot stand Roger? :)

I'm beginning to think FS should be added to that. I would pay Thomas or Berry.

FS is by far the most talent devoid position in football right now. If you manage to get an elite one, you better do everything in your power to keep him.

You all realize that this was one incident? And any contract can be structured with a morals clause.

They're not going to keep him long term. What are the odds he can stay out of embarrassing trouble for four or five years?

Had he been in any embarrassing trouble before? It's not like Hardy is Pacman Jones, who found trouble everywhere he went until he finally grew up a little in Cincy.
