FWST Blog: So how close was Garrett on Rams job? *Merge*

Do you think he can actually have a big year this coming year? It seems like the league's DCs caught up to him quickly after one year.

you don't think the guy is capable of making adjustments?

Not quickly..

When he can't figure out what a team is doing until late in the 3rd or 4th quarter (Ravens), that's an indication he's not that good at making adjustments, yet.

Not sure why you'd think that. The people up there said he was never even the leading candidate.

And why would Jason turn down an NFL job over such a small amount of money?

It makes no sense.

Who said he turned it down? Perhaps they got into negotiations and the Rams decided at that point they liked Spags better for the money. Who knows?

Why did JG turn down the jobs last year?

The news coming out of St. Louis was muddled at best. Some reported Spags, some reported Frazier, some reported a new mystery candidate (JG). Wonder why that is? Possibly because they were undecided, the guys doing the hiring were split?

This defenately looks bad on JG, no matter what story you buy. None of it will matter come next year, since he will be judged on our offense.

so why did they bring him back up there then?

me thinks the Rams used Garrett to get leverage on Spagnulo who now appears was the man for the job from day one. They fly Garrett & Wife to St. Louis and Spagnulo caves in on the $11.5M offer (which seems like chump change in today's sports business).

FWIW-----Mort reported that Garrett and Spags were tied across the board and the edge went to Spags for being on the defensive side of the ball.

Said it would change the culture there after 2 O-guys...

I heard that as well. It really may have been that simple. Take the D guy over the O guy.

Yeah, good a way as any to break a tie I guess...

execution man...execution

get the QB to quit throwing the ball into double coverages...get the 40+ mil RB to quit fumbling...more consistent OL play...we have the players, they just need to step up the work ethic

I also think the ultimate release of Owens will be a positive

thats possible I guess...they were gambling at that point then though...if Spag was the guy they wanted and they were playing one against the other, Spag could have pulled out

Garrett's current contract has 2 years left on it (maybe 3) worth $6 million (or $9 million). If it's about money, he made one helluva stupid decision.

But then, it's pretty obvious it's not about the money and he just wasn't a top candidate for the job.

I suspect for the Rams that Garrett was "the bird in the hand", your backup choice. And you keep that bird happy while you hope for #1 to fall your way.

Just a guess.

David.

Looks to me like he was back to 3rd string like during his playing days. He wasn't close at all: much ado about NOTHING.

Galloway just said there was a report out there that Pat Bowlen ripped Garrett to St. Louis' owner, saying he was a lousy interview. Anyone heard that or have any idea what he's talking about?

Maybe he called them the Dolphins again?:
