FWST: Ray Sherman on Ogletree

Who said this?

It's basically common sense that even the best players don't produce without getting as many opportunities as possible. Why was it so hard for the coaches to realize that they needed to give Austin as many opportunities as possible, with his ability to completely change the game?

I just find it disturbing that our playoff season rides on Roy Williams getting banged up in one practice. If that doesn't happen, we don't go anywhere. Not without Miles Austin.

All this talk reminds of the classic Julius vs. Marion debate. The whole "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and "you don't know more than the coaches, so shut up!" mentality just had me rolling my eyes.

I truly believe that the number 1 thing that separates this team from Superbowl winners is that they know how to utilize and optimize their talent, while we simply do not. We're content with it sitting on the bench, "earning its dues".

Your right everyone knew Austin would catch on fire as he did. No doubt the Cowboys were high on Miles which is why Jerry made the move to keep him. Going through training camp Austin looked good not great, in the games leading up to the KC game pretty much typical Miles so no I don't think this staff or any other staff would have figured Austin to come out and play like he did.

O-Tree has shown a lot of promise, but I'm not ready to throw him to the wolves yet. I hope to see him get around 10 snaps a game this coming year, then challenge for a starting spot the year after. He may not win the starting spot opposite Austin, but I hope he at least makes a competition out of it.

Hell, they didn't have to know that he would play like he did. I would take half of 250 yards any day. I just find it odd that a player can, out of "no where", not only play well, but completely light up the record books. Our franchise quarterback predicted a breakout season for Miles at the start of the 2008 season.

Maybe we should promote Romo to assistant coach, in addition to his quarterbacking and special teams duties...

Roy will never be the 3rd receiver here as long as his contract is that it is, but Ogletree could be primed to replace Crayton in the slot. Roy's going to have to renegotiate or get cut/traded to not be a starter, I think.

Roy will continue to start no doubt.

But after "starting" it's all about snaps and plays, and I dont doubt for a second that he could get passed up by either Crayton or Ogletree.

Who is talking benching Roy at midseason this past year? I am talking about next season. Make him earn his spot. But you know as well as I do, that has a very small chance of happening. We'll get more nonsense that Williams is just great in practice and he will continue to be a non-factor in games. Then lo and behold it is midseason and suddenly, no-no, we can't disturb anything in the middle of the season.

Ogletree's progression this year was actually perfectly acceptable for an undrafted rookie. I have no issue with the fact he didn't start. I don't know if he's even capable. But when you have a player who is primed like he has been, then it only makes sense to allow him the chance to take the next step. Open up the job. Sink or swim.
couldn't have said it better myself good post

And what the **** has Roy Williams earned?

Ogletree needs to have a competiton with Roy this TC.

Best man wins. No "45 mil" blinders on. We need whats best for the Dallas Cowboys.

Bank on it: Ogletree and Miles Austin will be the starters with Crayton in the slot next year.

Roy will back up Miles and Ogletree.

This, but i'm afraid his price tag will be the issue with his snaps.

You touched on one of my problems with this coaching staff. I don't trust them to make the "tough" decisions that ultimately lead us to becoming a better football team.

Why did it take an injury for us to find out that Miles Austin is one of the best Wide Receivers in football? Why did it take a banged up Barber for Felix to hit 100 yards rushing?

Seems like our coaches are either incompetent when it comes to evaluating talent, or spineless when it comes to making the tough decisions to aid this team. Either scenario unfortunately leaves us with a team that is only 80% as good as it could be. And in all likelyhood, it is probably that last 20% that we are going to need to improve on a mediocre scoring offense, and propel this team deeper in the playoffs.

These were my thoughts as well.

I do suspect that RW will have next year to 'put up', or else. And if he isn't doing his job, he'll see his playing time decrease, starter or not. One of the issues this year with a number of positions was that the backups were rookies or strictly special teams guys, and were not likely to do as well as they guy they'd replace.

What the hell does Ray Sherman know? He just coaches the kid. People here see the difference and they really know.[/sarcasm]

Unless you begin it with an opening sarcasm tag I'm not going to get the sarcasm.

True.

I don't care what any fans say, including those on this board. I'll go with whatever Ray Sherman says. When Sherman says he's ready, then we all will know he's ready. Heck Sherman deserves that much respect from us. Hope Jerry ensures Sherman remains a Cowboy as long as Sherman wants to remain a coach. If Garrett wants to move on sooner then Jerry wants to move him into HC job, maybe Sherman should be given the opportunity to replace him. However, given Garrett's obvious need for seasoning, I expect him to stick around for some time as our OC.

Great post.

This didn't happen when Landry was there ... or even Jimmy. Landry started some undrafted free agents, including rookies like Everson Walls, Michael Downs and Drew Pearson. I can't imagine an undrafted rookie starting in this current regime.

Ummm, Romo & Austin were undrafted.

They were down on him, because he always seemed to get injured right when the 'boys were ready to turn him loose. And seeing as how he had less than 20 catches prior to this year (I think), no one could see why he was able to stick on the roster. Now they do.

That said, people are high on Ogletree now. And like in most cases, if he doesn't transition his moderate success to more next year, fans will turn on him. It's the nature of fandom in today's NFL.

It's almost offensive to fans to allow coaches to groom players now. We've got to "SEE" why these guys are on the team.

Talk about hitting the nail on the head. That was perfection.

Chief stated, "I can't imagine an undrafted rookie starting in this current regime."

Both Tony Romo and Miles Austin did not gain starting positions in their rookie seasons.

Yes, clearly the coaches showed their moronic ways by allowing the 1st rd bust Mike Jenkins to compete with the far superior Orlando Scandrick, then rewarded the first rd bust a chance to rotate starts only because of where he was selected and his feelings might be hurt. CZ experts really nailed that one!

I would love to see Williams moved out of Dallas, but with Jones ego, I doubt that Jones will admit that Williams was a mistake.

I thought Jones fired TO this past offseason. Guess it was a dream. That Jerry can't make any tough decisions  I'm not saying Roy should be moved, but yeah....Jerry is not capable of making the tough call.

Not the best use of sarcasm, seeing as the message of my post wasn't "Cowboyszone is always right and the coaches are always wrong".

I just laugh at the ridiculous circular logic some seem to have adopted. "The reason we know <insert player> should be starting, is because they are starting!!!"

There is no doubt in my mind that this team isn't optimized to meet its true potential. And as long as we aren't 100%, we are going to have a hell of a hard time taking the next step. We aren't losing games because of the players we have in the game. We are losing games because of the players we DON'T have in the game. In a sport where a single play can change not only the outcome of the game, but of your entire season, we need to give our best play makers every opportunity we can. Have we honestly been doing that? Is Felix, for example, as involved as he needs to be?

I don't think so. So sue me...

I understand people's disappoint w/Roy, but Ogletree's place on the roster has nothing to do with Roy.

He was a rookie who showed promise. Fans and media need to allow him the chance to grow into his role, whatever that may be. Everyone is all on Miles' jock now, but two years ago, they were ready to run him out of town. When he's ready to be on the field for more snaps, there won't be any doubts he belongs.

thank you wg. : )
