In that game it wasn’t just about icing the kicker. Garrett’s game management had us settling for a 51 yard FG when every other coach in the league would have run at least 1 more play to try and get a shorter FG....

Garrett did blow that game, I agree. But not by icing his kicker, which was the point I'd responded to.

There's a little more detail to this than just the ST coach asked for a timeout and Garrett granted it to him.

To the 'icing the kicker' criticism? What extra detail is there?

If you're talking about how he blew that drive, I agree, for the record. Garrett likely cost us that game.

the better coaching and qb duo are usually the teams that are there in the final four takes to long to build a team in the cap era cant hold it together long enough if u have a really good coach and qb like new England Pittsburgh green bay atlanta new orleans you can stay competitive for several years

There was confusion on the sidelines right before the kick. The ST coach wanted to call a timeout because the play clock was under 10 seconds. Garrett then took his time walking up the ref and called timeout if you watch the clip, he just casually walks a few steps and then calls timeout. The reports were Garrett was unclear until after the game why the ST coach wanted a timeout there - he thought the play clock would expire.

The Icing the kicker dilemma is only pertinent cause he missed the kick. Some fans need something to blame beyond the kicker.

Thats really what all of this comes down to. The blame game. Which is popular with media and casual fans.

Garrett did I ice his own kicker in that game. On purpose. Based on odds he was betting Bailey could make the kick. His kicking record at the time was outlandishly good. Of course the haters obviously don't understand.

Coaches and players are always brilliant when it works and idiots when it doesn’t.

On purpose?

He called timeout because his special teams coach thought the play clock was going to run out.

I always thought Romo didn’t manage clock well there either but no ones blaming him. Selective memories and agendas usually drive the rhetoric.

Don't forget blowing a 23 point lead to the Packers in 2013, their biggest comeback win in franchise history.

Oh, and that wasn't with Aaron Rodgers at QB. That was losing to Matt Flynn. Matt. Freaking. Flynn.

But hey, "right direction", "culture", and "consistency." And the best training camp t-shirt slogans.

Completely forgot about that disaster. Another year we miss the playoffs by one game.

Garrett, after the game, kind of admitted that he was his mistake, not Romo's. His quote was that he had no explanation for why he didn't tell Romo to spike it sooner. Romo apparently looked over for guidance and Garrett let the clock run. Which was the first time the ST coach was seen saying something to Garrett on the sideline. It was never confirmed but some said the ST coach was wondering why they weren't trying to stop the clock to run a few more plays to get a shorter FG.

Coach just covering for his guy. Romo was veteran. Since when did he need to look over.

Bailey makes the kick. No one cares.

Really, who cares which one of Garrett’s mistakes cost us the game, icing the kicker or not trying to get closer with a timeout and plenty of time on the clock. Bottom line: Garrett made 2 mistakes in the last 30 seconds of that game to cost us the game. Think about that Garrett supporters, 2 mistakes in the last 30 seconds of a game. Coaching Makes a huge difference!!!!!!

Here's what Garrett actually said after the game when asked about why they called it:

"Just because we felt like the play clock was running down. Just wanted to make sure he had a real clean opportunity at it," Garrett said. "It was at about 6 (seconds), and we were still getting settled in, so we banged a timeout just to give him an opportunity to get the snap off and kick as clean as possible."

Pretty reasonable. They weren't settled, his ST coordinator asks for it, the HC calls it. They had two TOs in their pocket so there was no reason not to use one. Nothing wrong with that, at all. He got the TO off in time. I don't see how you fault him for any of that.

If you want to get on him, they had time to run a play and a TO to burn prior to clocking it. Even a short throw and a TO makes the kick a lot easier. Like I said, Garrett blew the clock management and possibly cost the team that game, but it wasn't because they called a time out before kicking it. The only reason people are mad is because Bailey made it the first time and missed it the second.

Your like Garrett. Won’t admit his mistakes. It was a no brainer to call timeout right away. Romo hesitated and didn’t call timeout right away and Garrett didn’t take charge. They both stood there and let 20-25 seconds tick off the clock. Also, Bailey did make the first kick that should have won the game for us, but didn’t, because Garrett iced his own kicker!!!!

LOL.

Garrett is the head coach. It’s his call to let the clock run or not.

Garrett is the most fascinating coach in football. His supporters want people to think he’s a decent or good coach but apparently the guy has no responsibilities as head coach.

I need a gig like that. Lots of money, people demand I get respect but I also have zero responsibilities.

It makes a big difference. Not running an offensive play with 8 second left and two TOs is not the same as 'icing your own kicker.' Fault the guy for the mistakes or judgement calls he actually made. There's no reason to make something up to be angry about.

The TO before the kick wasn't a mistake at all. It was the right call under the circumstances.

And there are situations where every coach makes good decisions and bad ones. Sometimes the games do come down to split-second judgement calls.

And the kicker and holder said they had time.

You can wait until 1 second to call timeout if you think they are struggling to get the kick off. And the kicker or holder can also call timeout if they feel rushed which McBriar said wasn’t the case.

He screwed up twice in that game.
