I expect the DeMarco love on this forum but I do not get the Murray hate.

The guy had an amazing year and was a huge reason for this team's success.

I'm either/or with him. If he comes back at a fair contract, the team can build on last year's momentum, hopefully shore up the defense, and will be one of the 3 best teams in the NFC. I'm not a fan of giving him a giant contract that eliminates the team from much needed upgrades on defense. I'm also okay with him getting a huge payday elsewhere, he earned it. Short of him coming out afterwards and dogging the organization, I'll root for him to be successful when he isn't playing us. The team has to go out and replace him with talent though.Simply depending on this O line to make average RB's better is a flawed and lazy strategy. Take the money you were comfortable paying Murray and go get a defensive end AND a running back. Get better, any way you can. Stepping back from Murray (talent wise) is not getting better.

Everything went awry with not being able to sign Dez Bryant long term. I told people it would be a difficult negotiation.... That combined with the apparent decision not to restructure Romo (which is unfathomable), has really crippled us in a year that we should be doing everything to improve our team and take advantage of what looks like a really weak NFC East and NFC.

The egos of Bryant and Murray may cost us a chance at a super bowl...

You should change your user name to chicken little, with you the sky is always falling. It's only the first day of free agency man.

Because he doesn't have Barry Sanders speed (neither did Emmitt) and everyone thinks he fumbles every time he touches the ball. Oh ya, our OL is the greatest to ever assemble. A scrub can get 1,800 behind that line. I kinda hope Murray leaves and we have a scrub rb start. And see how fans really think.

That should be the name of the forum right now. The Chicken Little Zone, where every move or potential move means the end of civilization.

Nailed it. Fact of the matter is he's better than any of our REALISTIC alternatives at RB (forget it, AD isn't coming), he's a great player and great players make teams better. That's all there is to it.

And any contrarian view or idea will get you stampeded on by the sheep. Gotta have your head on a swivel when you cross the Zone. :D

I agree with your statement on the surface, but I don't think it is a fair way to analyze it. I don't believe you can just say that Murray is better than any other realistic replacement and end it there.

More fair would be to judge things this way:

Demarco Murray vs a realistic replacement PLUS whoever else they can sign with the extra money saved from not signing Demarco.

I really think Garrett and Romo are the two main reasons we are having dialog at all with Murray.
They appreciated what he did for us In the past and like him personally.
And that IS a big deal.

But those that look at history and at this unemotionally (and expected future bang for buck) will say to be very careful here . In other words,Will McClay and Stephen may be offsetting the balance.

McClay may say (like was mentioned earlier)

What is better

Pick 27 (OO or a DT?) and Murray
Or
Hardy and Gurley

Not an easy call

Its not an easy call............Murray is a proven commodity and can pound defenses into submission. Yea, you don't want to overpay, but the idea that you can replace an 1800 yard back with a rookie is just stupid, everybody from Garrett to Romo to even Witten are on the record as saying Murray cannot be replaced like that.

What if the rookie cannot handle the workload and either gets hurt or is ineffective? Joseph Randal is the lead back then? LOL, yea that is really going to work out. The bottom line is that if our running game is not effective, then Romo starts having to do too much again and with his back he is probably not going to last too long dropping back 35 times a game.

This offense is designed to be run heavy, control the clock, protect the QB, and keep the defense off the field. We need a good RB to do this with and we have that with Murray. There is no guarantee that the next RB can preform up to the same level and if he cant, this team is in trouble.

His head is better than all of ours. He knows what he is doing. Why is that so hard for people to understand. He knows the situation better than you or I

I have to agree with Garrett..................Murray cannot be replaced with a rookie, especially a rookie at the 27th pick.

If there is a RB in this draft that can rush for almost 1,900 yards, average 4.7 per carry, catch 57 passes out of the backfield for almost 500 yards, score 13 rushing TDs, and stonewall blitzing linebackers in pass protection...............he aint going to be sitting there at pick 27, I hate to break the news to you guys about that.

Garrett realizes this as well.

I love what Garrett establishes with these players. They look at him as a friend and respect him as a coach. I'm sure he makes it very difficult for a lot of players to leave because of the bond he forms with them.

Which is why we have retained exactly two of our FAs to date (excluding Dez being tagged).

You do understand its not just about this coming year, but the next 3 or 4 right?

There are more than a few RB prospects in this draft who will be outperforming Murray by 2016 for a fraction of the cost.

Are we putting Romo in a time capsule while we wait for 2017 to arrive?

I don't advocate signing Murray to a stupid 4 year deal to accommodate 1-2 years of Romo's window.

Gimme a young stud RB that can grow with this young OL and take the pressure off Romo's replacement.

Do you really think Murray is going to do that next year?
