Garrett not a good coach?

We have had this argument too many times my friend. I hope this is the year Garrett wins me over. Time will tell and the excuses are growing thin. Time for Garrett to put up or shut up.
Come on cml...Jason has only been coachin with the club 10 yrs!! Give him 50 yrs and he may learn how to manage the clock and make good game day decisions. I mean, whats 10 yrs for an NFL coach!!

I'm really not interested in anybody being proven wrong on this topic. As far as I'm concerned, that horse left the building already, and I know better than to think everybody will acknowledge it. It'll be like it was with Tony, where the hardest core dissenters will eventually just be quiet on the subject once enough evidence accumulates. As far as I'm concerned, the guy has built a team capable of contending and he's shown that on the field. The only question now is can he build one that can actually compete for Superbowls. As you suggest, we'll see.

For the record, I've been told by people who should know that my opinion on this topic is 'very fresh.' A steady diet of common sense and a little bit of careful opinion-maintenance goes a long way.

Oh, never mind. I typed a long retort to your post and then realized Why??? so I deleted it. Time will tell about Garrett.. We can argue when he should be credited if he wins are when he should be credited if he loses. This season should tell us a lot about which narrative will prevail. If he is successful, your narrative(point of view) will prevail. If he is fired in the next few seasons (my point of view will prevail). Time will tell my friend.

I think we went through this exchange back in 2015 before his last $30MM extension. I know we went through it before last year's 13-3.

It's safe to say that a narrative has already prevailed. Our team got bad under Wade and has gotten better under Garrett. That's not debatable. Now, we're just waiting to see how good it can actually get. And how far over some posters will bend to give credit for the improvement to anybody other than the head coach.

Either way, let's hope the coming season indicates I'm right and you're wrong. We can probably both agree on that.

Wow, I want to leave this alone and meet you in the middle but you make it too hard. You do realize the middle is actually in the middle where some of both points are true. I am willing to concede that some of what you say may be true but given the nature of you responses you leave no room for my side being true. I have stated time will tell but you keep doubling down. I say again, time will tell. The past is already written. It can be spun any such way but the facts remain.

Yeah, not really a middle-ground sort of issue, right? He's either a good coach, or he's not. I know we won't ever agree on that topic, and I think we're both fine with that. But it's pretty black and white.

If people won't accept that the record, the 12-4 and the 13-3, the CoTY hardware, and the praise for him from everywhere within the organization as meeting the relatively low hurdle for 'good,' they're not going to change their minds if we happen to have another really positive season next season. They'll just double-down on either the playoff or the championship card. But it won't change the facts as they exist.

That said, I do appreciate your perspective, even if I happen to think you're wrong on this topic.

Well my friend again we agree to disagree. Soon Garrett will prove who is right. If we keep having this argument year after year after year for several more years, perhaps you will see my point of view? How long will you keep up the illusion without postseason success? It will not take much for me to change my mind but I have my standards which have not been met thus far in Garrett's career. I would much prefer to see your point of view meaning we become successful in both the regular season and the post season.

Let's just let it go. I'm always going to reject the notion that a guy who goes 12-4 and 13-3 but who doesn't win multiple playoff games isn't a 'good' coach by definition.

As long as we push the definition of 'good' far enough, I imagine we'll both end up happy. As I frequently say, at least now we're debating whether he can get us past 13-3. Not long ago people who thought he wasn't any good thought he couldn't get a team over .500. Now they're mad he hasn't gotten us past the divisional playoff round.

Interesting an well presented. This year will tell the tale. Be ready for a setback?!

We might well have a setback. Last year was pretty much a dream season.

Either way, we've got the team back where it needs to be. It's an open question whether or not we'll be able to ever take that next step. Garrett's high-water mark might be what we've seen here the last few seasons. But the list of coaches who build and maintain teams that win 75-80% of their games in an NFL season is not all that long.

Yep. Fans don't get that. Its not so easy with a game that demands a "team" wins in a series of one game showdowns. Thats why coaching is so important in the NFL. Heck, Hockey coaches have 7 games to prove what theory prevails. The NFL is not so intellectual....Jasons downfall???

Contrary to convenience of beliefs...good guys don't always finish last.

Garrett is the perfect coach for this team.

As a coach, he's just another coach. But in Dallas, where Jerry rides herd over his head coaches, Garrett is as good as we'll ever get. If not him, you'll get an endless succession of Campo, Gailey, and Wade replicas.

Garrett convinced Jerry to shed the roster of the old coots. Jerry loved to hang on to guys like Gurode, Brooking, James, Kosier, etc. Garrett wanted to go younger. He also wanted to rebuild the offensive line through the draft and get rid of the knuckleheads.

Garrett had to walk through the landmine of being Jerry's coach, and now, with McClay and Stephen firmly in place, it's paid off. Jerry has taken a big step backward from the football stuff.

Garrett also won the team over when he didn't let his personal friendship with Romo makes his decision last year. I thought Romo gave Dallas a better chance in the playoffs, but had Garrett gone to him, it would have been received poorly. I could see that. He did what he thought needed to be done.

All that said, Garrett will be carefully scrutinized this year. He and Stephen are friends, but Stephen is pretty cut-throat when it comes to business. He'd better hope Dak can handle a bigger load.

Garrett has been given the opportunity to grow into his position by Mr Jones...yes he has made many mistakes in the past...i think he gets really nervous even though he keeps the same look on his face..i think he tries real hard and works real hard and studies real hard...bottom line for me is how is the locker room?...Do the players play for him?...and by all accounts Garrett rates real high on both those marks...as long as he keeps top of the line assistants the team will continue to improve...that is the Switzer model that won us our last super bowl

The difference is that Switzer had a championship winning team playing for him. That team knew how to win. This one is still to be determined.

No, Jason is not a good coach, I do not care if his record is 58-46, he just does not know how to win in the playoffs

well Garrett does have the wild card win against Lions 2014....i think this is the year we find out what the Cowboys are made of...1st place schedule and many rookies in backfield...but if you think about our offensive fire power that is second to none in NFL...Dak..Zeke...Dez...Witten..Williams...bease...Switzer...butler...Rico...and i will pencil in Noah Brown...with all off season to and TC to mesh...and now Collins as a future offensive right tackle all pro...and LG will be either Green or Cooper...our O Line will be even more dominant than last year....we will handle "Snacks" week 1 for Giants..and dink and dunk and rip big gains with Zeke...and red zone Dez and Rico and bease and switzer and Williams and Witten...time of possession will be higher...our defense will be much better...Dak will have no sophmore slump....the worst we will do is 11-5 and still win division
