All the reports I have seen from the Cowboys website have said the coaches are very happy with what they have seen from Gathers and that he has been a very willing student, trying to pick up as much as he can from everyone. Have seen some comments saying that he doesn't look out of place.

I would think that if we don't keep a FB we could keep 4 TE's. Witten and Hanna are givens. Swaim, Escobar, Gathers and the TE out of Wisconsin are fighting for 1-2 spots. Swaim might be the favorite to stick right now for the 3rd spot since he is healthy, has been in the system for a year and is fairly well rounded. The Wisconsin TE is a decent athlete but not on par with Hanna or Gathers. He is likely PS material unless he is head and shoulders better than Gathers.

As far as Escobar, I think he is very overrated around here. He is a tall receiver without bulk, but he is not fast (4.81 40 at combine) so he isn't running away from anyone in the pros. He doesn't block. The only route he runs is a fade and I don't think they have completed one too him. Pretty much all his catches come on extend the play action from Romo. Throw in that it will probably starts training camp on the PUP and I don't see anyone can think he is a lock for anything.

He can probably out -rebound Escobar, but other than that he probably has a ways to go to even make the regular roster.

It wouldn't surprise me if Escobar is cut if injuries don't hit the TEs.

Why not?

What would it take to bump Escobar off of this roster?

The guy is an absolute BUST!

Not only has he been an epic disappointment, but now he's coming off of an Achilles injury and entering the final year of his contract.

The question becomes would you rather keep athleticism and potential on a multi-year deal or keep a disappointment who will be a free agent next year?

If Gathers looks even competent, I'm keeping him over a wasted draft pick who will always be connected to the fact that this team could have had Le'Veon Bell instead and the domino effect that terrible decision has continued to have.

Both Dunbar and Escobar should be PUP'd, IR'd and said goodbye to.

Good points but I think you are leaving out the experience factor. IF Dunbar and Escobar can come back from their injuries then they add something others don't have esp Dunbar. It will take a year plus for Rico to start 'getting it'. Not impossible for him to play STs nor to play a role in the passing game on occasion so I'm not writing him on the PS in indelible ink just yet.

The team that does it right with two TE's doesn't think so. The Patriots succeeded with Gronkowski and Hernandez and have continued to bring in low-priced counterparts to Gronkowski since Hernandez went gangster, most recently with former Cowboy Martellus Bennett. While the Cowboys have repeatedly failed, the Patriots have made it work.

Patriots offense revolves around seems and slants to center of the field. They have made a killing off it for 15 years. Marty B will love it there.

Considering the number of teams that attended his workout, I'd be worried about exposing him to waivers in order to get him to the practice squad.

As for Dunbar? I'm not even sure that he'll be the same player he once was, to say nothing of his being perpetually injured. I'm moving on from him.

I agree. I expect him to do well and be a real force there. Once again showing how the Patriots find a way to make things work where other teams fail.

They are always one step ahead. Weather it's cheating or out smarting.. They get results.

I'm not impressed with the depth behind Witten in general, so If Gathers does well in camp, i wouldn't be surprised if he makes the team.

Happily the team isn't.......yet.

Your point about Rico and waivers is valid,

Gathers has the size to be a blocking machine. Whether or not he develops the ability to do that is yet to be determined. I don't think has much to offer in the getting seperation and pass catching arena.

Judging by his ability to boxout and rebound I think it's fair to say he's teachable as far as blocking guys out and going after jump balls in the end zone. It's a stretch yes, but the fact that he didn't play a down of football in college and he still went before the 7th round means something is there that scouts see.

I think his size and arm length along with power will allow him to be a good blocker if he can learn technique. We have developed a couple of guys like him in the past so it is doable.

Agree, I think they go 4 TE's

Gathers isn't "bumping" anyone, at least not this coming season. Escobar starts the year on PUP, and who knows when he comes off. Achilles tears are unpredictable as to length of rehab.

Gathers, OTOH, s a project. He's the kind of player you wouldn't waste a draft pick,on without an internal agreement in place to give him this year just to learn the nuances and particulars of the game. I think he makes the 53 this season, though inactive, so he isn't exposed to waivers. The clock on his development starts in 2017.

Competition will decide who is going to be where. However, I do believe the rookie will need time to develop. If he shows flashes, you may not want him on the PS because someone will snatch him up in my opinion. As for Escobar, I haven't seen much out of him and the injury doesn't help any. The team has to be willing to move on from players that can't produce sooner than later. My main concern is salary cap ramifications.
