I would take Jerry as our GM at this point over the other candidates for one reason above all others. He actually has something on the line personally. The other candidates except for Mike Brown, it is really just a job.
Snyder and others have a lot of personal investment in the team. I think the difference between guys like Jerry, Snyder, Kraft and guys like Brown, Bidwell, Wilson, etc. is that the Jerry/Snyder/Kraft types are very aggressive with their teams. Each side wants to make money and won't put up with losing money for long, but the Jerry/Snyder/Kraft types are aggressive marketers of their product along with being aggressive with putting the best team forth because they know that good team usually equates to more sales. The Brown/Bidwell/Wilson types want to make money above and beyond anything. And with the way the the NFL is set up, it allows the Brown/Bidwell/Wilson types to make a lot of money despite fielding lousy teams. These types are very passive because they fear that if they spend money to put the best roster they can together, they could not succeed on the field and actually lose money compared to if they sucked and their games were blacked out.
A lot of people associate the system with the salary cap and call it a socialist type of economy. But in reality the salary cap has nothing to do with it as shown by the teams that are well, well under the cap and the teams that are just under the cap. Fans often forget that the teams in the NFL are more or less wholly owned subsidiaries of the NFL and that the salary cap is more or less a budget the NFL allows on payroll, which is hardly socialist. Where the NFL is socialist in nature is in the revenue sharing which allow teams that can't sell and blackout to still make great revenue and provides little motivation for them to be aggressive in the marketing or roster moves. This is one of the reasons why I appreciate Jerry. It's sort of ridiculous to claim that Dallas has a "big market" when there are several teams that have far more population than Dallas does. This includes Houston. Yet, Jerry has been such an aggressive marketer of the team and aggressive in roster building because he wants his organization to be the best team possible.
I think it's obvious that Jerry has learned over the past few years as he holds tight to draft picks. I really believe that 10 years ago Jerry would have traded up in the top 5 to get McFadden and not even blink twice. I believe that 10 years ago that Jerry would've given up draft picks for Tank Johnson. I believe that he'd be more than happy to give up a 3rd and a 4th for Pacman a decade ago. And I would've counted on Dallas at least drafting a troubled player or two in the draft. Instead the opposite has just about happened and the Cowboys are better for it.
