Man, I so much would rather have kept Roy. Better character and now we're going to lose Comp picks in 2010. I hate my greed, but I feed it too.
This approach to the disappointment, I think I understand better than anyone's complaint so far. But the question with each Free Agent you should ask is, could we get a better player than this in the next year draft with the compensatory pick we stand to earn and can our team wait until next year to address the position being filled by said player?
I think we can all agree that the Safety position still should be addressed in the draft, and therefore, no it could not wait. Obviously, I don't know enough about next years prospects to know if we could find someone so much better that it's worth waiting for, but I do doubt it.
At 25, Gerald is entering his prime, but still has several years left to be a contributor on defense and Special Teams. Running a 4.51 for a Safety is exceptionally fast, which was one of the things that I think we all agreed our Safety position needed. Despite being considered better in run support coming out of college in 2005, he had 4 interceptions last year in 13 games, which is half as many as the Cowboys had in 16.
I, like many, am all for rebuilding through the draft, but the acquisitions the Cowboy's have made are exceptions to the rule because every player has familiarity with at least one of the coaches currently on the staff. That, I think, is important.
The other aspect I like about the players the Cowboys have acquired is the overall cost and the contracts are geared towards making players perform to prove they're worthy of a bigger contract.
Also, in each position, the Cowboys have gotten younger and improved our chances of maintaining continuity with the same group for awhile.
Lastly, we still should have 11 picks come draft day. These acquisitions have afforded the Cowboys the ability to draft the best player available versus drafting for need, like my below mock draft suggest.
