Gholson: Shipley could shine for Cowboys

I like Shippley because he makes plays. He shows up in big games. Don't know about the 40 time, or the size speed ratio, or his college background. He just makes plays. Hopefully he's there when we pick in the second round.

I just don't see it in Shipley. Maybe I'm wrong, but I just think he's too average physically.

Maybe he's a lot faster than I think... This is a time where the combine 40 time is actually useful.

Hes a blazer and as fast as he is he is probably more quick than he is fast.

He runs good routes too and of course has fantastic hands.

He can stretch the middle of the field no problem as well as eat up all the underneath stuff as well.

The keys for him are going to be his short shuttle and 3-cone drills to show if he has the elite quickness and change of direction skills needed at the next level.

The other question is whether he is tough enough to handle being tackled by LBs underneath.

Did that UT WR who started alongside Shipley in 2008 make the roster of any team this year?

I know he was a little older after playing baseball a few seasons.

Cosby?

He played for the Bengals and contributed as a returner. He made some plays for them this year.

We all know that the NFL Draft is a crap shoot.

I don't think that Shipley is a speed demon. Now he might prove me wrong at either his pro-day or combine workout, but I don't think he will.

yeah, that's the guy. Thanks. I thought he was good enough to make a roster, but I did not know if his age would keep him from getting a shot since he was not a special talent.

Key on this.

This is what we need at WR. I like Shipley. He's a player. I'd love to see us take him with a late 2 or early 3. Even if WR isn't a pressing need.

I wouldn't be upset, at all, if we wind up with Jordan Shipley at the right spot in the draft. I think he's a great Slot WR possibility for us.

I agree. I believe that Shipley could kill in the slot for us.

He and Witten working the middle of the field together really makes me excited.

Mid round would be ok, but we have far too many pressing needs to consider him early on.

What will scare teams is that he is not actually 6'-0" tall.
We'll know the answer to this in a couple of weeks.

Also, toward the OP's 40 time comment, his time will soon be know too...but most have said it's closer to 4.5 than 4.4---which is still fine.

As long as he is 5'10 than I wouldn't even worry.

If your planning on putting him @ X or Z than it may be an issue but for a slot guy his height doesn't matter.

I would not mind another WR as I think it is time for Hurd to go as he looks like he will never be competent WR. He got to be #3 for a whole year in 2007 and did nothing, nothing again in 2008 and nothing in 2009 when given a chance - key drops and inabillity to make plays.

I would like to get a guy who is a WR but also a guy who can return kickoffs and punts.

How high a pick we spend, if any, depends a lot on what the team thinks of Ogletree. If they think he is the #2 before the season is out and a future 1000 yard 16ypc guy with deep speed and then I would spend a late pick on a guy who is a developmental guy or go aggressively after UDFAs that we like. If the team views him more as a future #3 slot guy after Crayton steps down then we should consider 2nd or 3rd round where there is often value for #2 type WRs.

I wouldn't depend on Olgetree as the #2. Less than I would RW. So I'm all for taking a WR in the second thru fourth round esp the second. My pet is McCluster. I love his quicks and speed esp the former.

Isn't this guy a 1st rounder right now?

I would honestly prefer to use it on a good OT prospect if one is available. I would settle for a G/C but I'd prefer a RT candidate.

I don't understand the first sentence. I'd love a good OT prospect but I'm more certain we'll get a chance at a good G. We need a C though. I'd still take a OL and WR with the first two picks if at all possible. Obviously if a S, ILB, or OLB falls to us and is the BPA then you go there.

there are a couple in the 3rd

C/G Eric Olsen, Notre Dame
C/G Matt Tennant, Boston College

and one in the 6-7

C/OG Erik Cook, New Mexico

No way we WR in the first rounds. It just won't happen.

He's fast, he's tough, he's clutch, he can return kicks/punts, bottom line, if he's around in the late 2nd, 3rd, do it and don't look back.
