Giants, Eli Manning said to be close on $120M contract extension

The New York Giants are close to locking up quarterback Eli Manning's services for a long, long time. The New York Daily News is reporting that the Giants and Manning are negotiating a seven- to eight-year deal in the neighborhood of $110-120M with $40M of that money guaranteed.

That could be more than the money his brother, three-time MVP Peyton, is making with the Colts. He signed a seven-year, $98M deal with Indianapolis in 2004.
Here's some more details from the News' Ralph Vacchiano:
Based on interviews with several agents and personnel people, Eli Manning appears to be in line for a seven- or eight-year contract worth $110 million-$120 million with $40 million in guarantees. That would make the 28-year-old the eighth quarterback to top the $100 million barrier, and would put him near the top with Philadelphia's Donovan McNabb (12 years, $115million), Cincinnati's Carson Palmer (nine years, $118.75 million), and former Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick (10 years, $130 million).
"We know," said one team source. "But that's money we're going to be happy to pay."
After leading the Giants to an improbable Super Bowl win over the previously unbeaten Patriots last season, Manning led the Giants to a blistering 10-1 start and appeared primed for another Super Bowl run. But wide receiver Plaxico Burress shot himself in the leg in a Manhattan night club and was suspended for the remainder of the season and the Giants stumbled in the final five games, going 2-3 before they were eliminated by the Eagles last weekend.

This may be old news to some people (I haven't seen it posted) but when I heard this on the radio this morning, I couldn't believe it.

He would be the highest paid QB in the league.

It is absolutely stupid to pay a ball managing QB that type of money. That should only be reserved for playmaking QBs who don't make 10k turnovers like Romo.

This is quite possibly the most unbelievable contract in the history of the NFL.

Well, Eli's smart in that he knows the time to strike. His luster of last year's Super Bowl win will only last so long, and his playoff effort this year was much more reminiscent of the Eli of old.

I realize we live in an era where big-name players get overpaid, but this seems downright ridiculous.

Wow. Do it! Do it!

Yeah, I agree. The more "extra" they pay to undeserving players, the less they'l have to pay to players who make the undeserving ones look better than they are.

Paying all this money for a guy who's arm isn't strong enough to deal with the conditions of Giants stadium in January. He isn't worth it.

Very well deserved. I mean, the guy does it all, like tackling defenders rude enough to pick off his passes.

I think Eli is a lot better than many folks on this board (who I generally believe are too obsessed with fantasy stats).

However that deal is pretty huge for the guy. Of course, there will likely be several other QB deals that come down the pipe over the next year or so that are going to make Eli's deal look like a bargain.

Giants fans don't even like it, lol.

From boards.giants.com...

if this is true god help us talk about paralyzing a team. We need cap room to put really good players around a system qb who won't carry his team to victory. That would be selfish on his part to think he is worth anywhere near that as he is a garcia caliber qb nothing special but can be servicable.

damn, can ELI win a home game in the playoffs before all this money is given to him.

Giving this inaccurate Qb all that money is a HUGE msitake...

Eli is not a franchise quarterback. I have said that all year. It has little to do with his recent failure (and it was a big one). I would be very disgusted as a fan if Mara gave Eli any more than what any of the top 10 QBs in the NFL are making.

Again...the best O Line in football and the best running game in football. The defense was also like 6th overall. Eli was at best a cog. We can spend money like that on upgrading at other positions. I would be more than happy with Carr. Eli is a joke.

We'd all notice the diffrence because Carr outplayed Eli by a mile when he got his shot.. All of a sudden the Wr's looked pretty damn good.. Moss caught some nice balls downfield.. Manningham a couple of great quick slants and Hixon grabbed a beautiful deep ball over Pro-Bowl corner Antoine Winfield. Open up the competition and make Eli fight for his job and not just hand it to him like everyting else in life..... I have no doubts Carr will beat him out.. He's stronger, faster, mobile, much more accurate and better looking then Eli

Carr outplayed Eli by a wide margin in the Vikings game.. Eli was overthrowing everything and when Carr came in he was firing strikes against a desperate Vikings Defense playing all of there starters and still fighting for there playoff lives

They would rather have David Carr :laugh2:

If anything, "fantasy stats" would suggest Eli is a pretty decent QB, seeing as he has decent "total" numbers for touchdowns and yards.

What Eli is below average in is yards per attempt and completion percentage. Those are two very important measures of efficiency. And they're not fantasy stats. At least not that I know of.

The only thing that matters is guaranteed money, all they would really need to do is keep him for 5 years to get their money worth. Romo has just 10 mil less in guaranteed money and his contract, and he hasn't won a Superbowl like Eli has.

He's already making like 12 million a yr with his current deal, it's not going to hurt them too bad.

$120million x 10yrs = $12 million

According to Rotoworld, his '09 salary is 8.95 million, so I assume his '08 salary was less than that.
