Giants making moves. Cowboys waiting

Giants and Eagles both making moves you would expect from a sub .500 football team. Obviously every signing doesn't pan out, but the logical thinking is that when you dont perform you have to try to bring in impact players, make impact deals in order to change that. The Jones boys really think they are the Patriots and can just sit back and relax every offseason.

Well I wouldn't categorize the Eagles and Giants as making the same moves. The Giants are adding salary while the Eagles are trying to shed salary that their previous head coach dumped on them.

But it appears, at least for the Eagles, it's not working out. Apparently the deal to Miami is now off as the Dolphins have concerns over Maxwell's shoulder. That's code for Tannenbaum saw he was getting killed over swapping #1 picks and now he's finding a way to change the deal or back out.

You would think after watching the Eagirls dream teams that fans will learn but they won't lol.

The Patriots always build from BOTH the draft and by making free agent signings that fill holes in the roster. As do the Broncos.

Unless you're going to hit on all of your draft picks (and the Cowboys rarely, if ever, do), you have to go out and sign players in free agency.

All fans care about is winning the offseason.

Well we did that last year through the draft and free agency.

And it is commonly accepted that free agency isn't the pathway to a championship. For years now the Cowboys have used free agency to plug holes so that they can have a true draft board. You can argue the strategy. But arguing confusion as to the plan just shows you haven't been paying attention.

It isn't the pathway, but you can't ignore it.

Denver - Talib, Ware, E Sanders etc

Exactly.

No one is saying the Cowboys should be out there throwing money around like candy today but they also aren't good enough as a team to be shopping around the bargain bin and trying to convince fans they are buying low on undervalued players.

If the Cowboys were serious about fixing the pass rush, they should have been in on Mario Williams, who got a pretty fair contract. Instead, we are shopping around for cheaper options like Adrian Clayborn, who on the surface wouldnt' be a bad depth signing, but then stories come out about how some think he might be a 8-9 sack guy and you wonder if the Cowboys actually view him as a solution to our pass rush.

The jags are not going to suck. Up and coming team. You can throw in the Raiders as well. Both teams are assembling some serious talent and already have their version of the triplets in place.

Exactly right!!!! Raiders along with the Jags are making some nice signings!!!! I like both teams!!!!

I'm sick of hearing Jerry say, "This is a guy we loved coming out of college. We had a 1st round grade on him. He's going to surprise a lot of people" after we sign a mediocre player.

If the FO truly believed we can win now, especially with the Romo window closing, then put SOME of your money where your mouth is, and get legitimate, proven players!

On defense, the Patriots bought their championship two years ago, and then released the two CBs once they won it all.

They can have him...Jenkins is worth half what they paid. These mega free agent deals rarely wok out. Perennial power houses rarely make these types of moves and the Cowboys are trying to get there. Be patient people!

Skins resigned McCoy.

I am going to laugh when the solution to one of our biggest problems according to Jerry is Kellen Moore.

It isn't the pathway, but you can't ignore it.

Denver - Talib, Ware, E Sanders etc

Great there is one example.

And notice how among those guys all 3 where brought in 2 years ago and the two most disruptive players for the Broncos were drafted by the team in Malik and Von.

And for every team where free agency works... You have 5 horror stories of where it doesn't.

The Packers for instance have historically been among the most conservative free agent spenders.

With finite resources the goal isn't to go out and pay market rate for players who historically aren't worth their price.

I for one am happy this team has gone the direction of targeted free agent acquisitions and trying to build through the draft.

It's boring but historically the best strategy. The Broncos are the exception that proves the rule. Not vice versa.

4 - 12, the previous season.
You are what you are.
Have a current organizational vision/plan to sell today, with the aim of being a strong consistent competitor in the future.

Rebuilding, not a win-now mentality.
Go cheap but smart in free agency and overhaul the team with foundational pivotal players in the drafts over the next 3 plus years.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Expect a couple more soundbytes like this one over the next week or so:

There’s no question in my mind that he can ultimately play and win games as a quarterback in the NFL—Kellen Moore can. There’s no question in my mind.

“Now, along the way will he lose more than you can afford to be around for when he does win one, or win two or three? That’s the big question.

So I’m not basically saying he can take you to a division or a Super Bowl. I don’t know that. But I will say that he’s got something special.”

Some fans just don't get it

Don't forget Denver who signed all those big name FAs
How'd that work out for them ?

Unless we vastly improve in drafting this strategy will NEVER work.

So the FA solution to two our biggest needs as expressed by Jerry - backup QB and pass rush - will be Kellen Moore and Adrian Clayborn.

Winning.

Few things on this site more irritate me more than the crowd that wants action, just so we have action.
No specific plans...but hey, if one team overpays for someone, we shoud too.
It's beyond juvenile. And already at this early stage, we've had several sky-is-falling type threads.

Recall that last year and before, the grand poobah in Philly--with all his bold moves--was going to destroy Dallas and dominate for years to come.
Good grief.

I'd rather sign Nick Hayden than have a Byroj Maxwell or Brandon Carr situation.

rocyaice Boss most of us understand you cant spend crazy in FA but when you whiff on 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th round picks you have to make up for it somewhere or your left with terrible depth

Bingo.

The reality to most, other than the homers, is that this team isn't good enough to just make a tweak here or a tweak there and we can book our tickets for the next SB. This team has real holes and they can't all be filled in this draft (especially given how other than the first round in the last few drafts, the Cowboys really are inconsistent in the other rounds).

It's also a bit bizarre that many of the people preaching patience and don't sign any big name free agents are the same ones complaining about taking a QB at 4 because you have to win NOW with Romo on his last legs. Well if we can't take a QB at 4 because we need to win now, then bargain shopping in free agency doesn't make much sense either.
