Go get a Difference Maker on D

I agree with the OP. It's time to make a move Jerry!
I personally think this defense is already starting to improve. And I think that trend will continue as the team gets more and more comfortable with the system.
Factor in that we have a lot of guys getting healthy and that should also help. With guys like Overshown and Revel, Diggs all coming back very soon, I think adding a quality starting caliber MLB could make this defense good "enough" to compete in the NFC.
And if DO returns fully healthy and can still fly all over the field, he maybe the missing piece to tie it all together up front.
I think the D-line is doing fairly well overall, certainly better than last year. They could be getting more re-enforcements soon too. (Winfrey and Turner could both be back soon) But if they could add another quality DT or DE to the mix they could be vastly improved over last year.

I am not saying they should trade away any of those #1 picks, but I am saying with those picks in their back pockets, they can afford to spend an early-mid rd pick (2-5) or two; or maybe they can trade a player from a deep spot on the roster like a WR or OL; to improve the defense.

IMHO, the first move would help assure they make the playoffs, the second helps them make a deep run. And with this offense who knows how far that goes.

I thought Murray played better yesterday. The LB units as a whole looked much better without Sanborn.
They looked better, but Murray is still a problem. He is out of position constantly.

He has been a below average player his entire career, but is a freak athlete capable of lucking into some plays that trick you into thinking he's better than he is.

There's a reason he doesn't stick on any of the teams he's been on.

I don't understand this at all. The Cowboys had one and just traded him a few weeks ago. So you are advocating the Cowboys need to use some high picks and trade for a difference maker???

This defense is broken. It will take more than one big addition to make a difference. Keep the draft picks for next April.
It was obvious in game 1 that Micah was missed.

No more elite DE, who runs a 4.3 40 time. Sack machine.

Seriously, get another stud DT and DE. A FS would be gravy. We're fine at RB and O is almost back. Wouldn't be mad if they signed kendricks for LB depth. He is better than, probably all of our LB's not named Overshown.
Eber calls zone / off man cover every play.

Won’t matter.

Depth? We need 3 starters at LB.

More importantly - no more dude commanding double teams that let the Sam Williams of the world shine.

This defense needs a DC, DT, DE, 2 LBs, 1 CB, 1 safety

Cant “go get that” in the middle of the season
I dont disagree. If we are building a top 10ish defense.

But this defense doesn't need to be top 10 or top.15ish.

If we improve enough to be about 20-25 range for rest of the season then that would put us in play and give us a chance. We were giving up above 55% on 3rd down conversions. I think after Washington game it's about 52%.

Get that to about 40-45%, and this is good enough. Give offe se an extra or two possessions per game, and it will make a huge difference.

Then focus on drafting defense the next two years....we can still keep Pickens. Get a RB. And with CD, Pickens, Turpin, flourney, fergi and young OL we have core offensivenplayers in place for next two years.

Going from.almostnworst defense in history to slightly below average has huge impact. Washington game is great example.

Sounds nice but by the time these defensive players we drafted are ready to make an impact Daks contract needs renewal at 70 million

Even this assumes we hit on a lot of those defensive players which is unlikely

well, just adding talent that has a little more speed and bit more athletic will make enough difference. again, I am not referring to building a top 10ish defense, but one in low 20s would suffice and make us competitive. as I mentioned, right now we are giving up over 52% 3rd down conversion. make that 45% and that's a huge difference. don't be an all time worst defense is a huge difference. right now when I watch this team, they seem slow, unathletic, seemingly always trailing in plays and can't move fast enough and not very smart.

My problem with this scenario, beyond what i stated above, is that Dak is a mirage that does great in the regular season and turns into a pumpkin in the playoffs. This is not based on a year or 2 but 10 years of starting QB history. I fear that at this point this is who he is and expecting him to suddenly flip a switch after 10 years is not likely.

I have said for a few years that for Dak to take us deep in the playoffs he needs 2 things:
1. a top 5 run game so you can take the ball out of his hands in critical situations and hand it off and get 3-5 yards.
2. A top 10 defense to not allow the other team to get a lead late in the game.

If not, then we can get lucky but I wouldn’t count on it

So the plan for me would be to get a much much better DC and defense with a lot more talent and another really good RB with Williams

we can still acquire talent. get better and still get draft picks and build a top notch defense over the next couple of years. the two aren't necessarily dependent on each other. and wether we like it or not, Dak is here for another couple of years. so wasting a year and not taking a chance when the offense is playing at the levels it is, would be a waste of a year. you have to take a shot. now I get it with the Dak post season comments. I would directly blame him mostly for two of the losses, but there were a couple of them that wasn't necessarily him, as he did what he was supposed to .

so your plan is long term. my thought is address some short term and still do the long term. you just want to give up, where I think we can take a shot. why not!? no one can explain that. just because you don't like Dak is not a good enough reason not to take a shot.

btw, we do have a top 5 rush game. the offense the way they play don't necessarily need a top 10 defense.
