My working theory is that the Cowboys OL and running game was so good this year (and will be even better next year) that the idea that you need a super elite WR pulling double-coverage isn't required.

In fact, shouldn't it be the other way around? The power running game is setting up play-action shots down the field for WRs? Isn't that the way this usually works?

Even then most teams doubled Dez
The offense works so well because wd have a great run game AND Dez to draw double coverage , this makes the defense predictable and romo can pick them apart
However both things are needed and if is easier to have a great run game without Murray and Dez will be almost impossible to replace
