The thing that bugs me about the extreme negativity is that it makes it difficult to analyze what really happened.

The opposite is also true. The groups that have an extreme devotion certain players will derail any thread where someone attempts to analyze that player.

The way I see it:
Free Agents
Paea - Played well. Not certain if the knee was a problem after or before signing. Probably a good move to sign him but it didn't work out.

D.Moore - Low cost move that almost worked out. They could have moved on after his suspension if he sucked on the field. Reasonable decision to give him a shot.

Carroll - This one is difficult. He was good against the Giants but sucked for a half against the Broncos. I don't know how much the concussion factored into the decision to cut him. I'll put this under bad decision but I can't completely dismiss the fact that he was decent against the Giants.

Thorton - He was really good against the run the year before they signed him. He gave gave Zack Martin problems especially on zone stretch runs. At 4M per it seemed like a good move at the time. He seemed to lose focus after getting paid.

Look at any one of these alone and they seemed like reasonable low cost moves; however, looking at them all together makes it seem like a problem. Is is just that low cost free agents often don't work out or is it that the team is missing something in their evaluation process?

Free Agents not signed. Questionable not to sign a legit free agent but if they're going to fail, better Carroll at 4M than Carr at 50M.

The most positive sign is that they cut bait on these players and didn't make the problem worse by holding on to them to prove a point which they would have done 10 years ago.

Draft Issues
Taco - His slow progress is a concern, but it's well chronicled that rookie DEs often struggle.

Awuzie - He didn't have a significant injury history; therefore, I can't expect the team to foresee the injury. He has looked really good in very limited snaps but you need to study the All-22 to see it. He still seems like a bargain at the end of the 2nd because I expected him to go in the first.

Lewis - Obviously a good decision despite the pending DV issue at draft time.

Jaylon - Maybe worth the risk considering the Cowboys Doctor is his Doctor. It has to be considered a fail at this point even if he is great next year.

Gregory - Similar risk/reward decision as Jaylon. Obviously a fail at this point but a reasonable risk/reward at the time of the decision.

The problem is not drafting 1 high risk, high reward player, but the fact that they've done it too often.

Drafting Zeke
This argument seems silly. He is a Super Star type player. Looking back I wish they had drafted a RB instead of Claiborne.

Dez Fan Boys
The Dez fan boys won't concede any criticism of the player. The excuses in response to Percy's numbers were bizarre. The number one WR should not have a catch rate that is way worse than all of the other Cowboys receiving options considering they all have the same QB. The problem goes back to the last couple of years with Romo also, so the finger can't really be pointed at Dak, but the Fan Boys or should I say fan Boiz try to claim it's Dak's fault.

Kellen Moore
People love to hate this player. My take is that it's better than spending money and/or draft picks on a spare like they did with Matt Cassell. They also didn't just keep him on the 53 all season to prove a point like they might have in the past.

Summary
People have complained about everything but not much about something that might have been the biggest problem. They didn't adequately address back-up LB.

Jaylon was forced to play way too many snaps. Durant was a added just before training camp and missed the entire preseason just to get into football condition; therefore, I can't really consider him a legit backup plan. Bruce Carter was available until May 2nd. I would have taken him over seeing Jaylon and Durant out there for far too many snaps.

The irony isnt lost in you chasting "extreme" views, then resorting to pejoratives and ad hominems when someone doesnt believe that Dez should be benched or cut today or that Parnell is the second coming of Erik Williams

The bigger, long term and systemic issue is that defensive moves have been a failure almost as frequent as the sucker bets in craps. The overall evaluation and value to production ratio is not adequate

My posts are based on analyzing players by watching a lot of game footage. I'm not just making claims based on nothing.

Save us some time x and just type "I support whatever decisions this team makes."

You''ll have way more time to analyze players, watch game tape, and so on. Being the unofficial team apologist has to cut into your time.

This is exactly what I described in the OP. Negativity without any thought. I listed multiple things that are problems. For starters they gave a 70M contract to an underacheiver.

The issue is our scouts are really good at evaluating offensive players, but defense is not their forte. They also always go after that guy "that should be a first round pick" but fell because of off the field issues or injuries.

No doubt were a different team had we hit on "safer" 2nd round picks instead of gambling on Jaylon/Gregory and signed one or two major free agents for the defense.

When you lose you tend to self evaluate. I have a feeling we might get familiar with these threads if the defense gets another round of injuries.

What makes your analysis any more accurate than anyone else’s?
These are all opinions.
Don’t be surprised when others opinion don’t agree with yours.

The key is to accept, encourage, support people voice opinions that don’t match with yours.

I appreciate your analysis of Dez. I don’t agree with it. Nor do a agree with the need to repeat your opinion over and over in threads where it doesn’t belong.

We all want the same thing in the end. We all have opinions and they are all like buttholes.

I think alot of what you said is dead on but you have your own biases. Dez is a number one and a damn good one. Hes not Julio or any of the top 6 or 8 wrs but hes still one of the top Wrs in the game. Hes far from perfect but with Dez you have to take the good with the bad.

Good post. Gambling hasn't paid off in some cases but Dez was also a bit of a gamble at the time. We tend to forget the hits and harp on the misses.

We can probably get a really good linebacker in the top 3 rounds. Hopefully we will consider one of the opportunity presents ittself and need lines up with value.

No. He's really not. I want to agree with you, it's just not factual. Dez is a terrible value vs what we are paying him and he is a very marginal #1 receiver. Butler is probably better than him right now.

Well Mr king x did point out each player and has proven to be a studied fan. His not uninformed fan just spouting non sense. The team has a plan you don't like it
Ok.

Yes. The varied opinions are what make this board fun and informative. I personally think Dez is way over rated, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have value. He is just way over rated. He would be a pretty decent #2 possession receiver.

Understatement.
Jaylon Smith wasn't just a 2nd round pick, he was pick #34. Gambling with a resource such as that is precisely why we are constantly in defense hell.
Gregory had all the warning signs any smart GM would heed. But we don't have a smart GM, we have a gambler.
And to take it a step further, trading up to take Mo Claiborne was just plain bone-headed.

If Jaylon turns into the next Lawrence Taylor it will have been a good gamble. The jury is still out on it but it's speculative right now. At least character is not a concern. He seems to be a dedicated player and a great teammate.

Gregory is a head scratcher. He was a head case/character risk. On top of that he isn't built like a true 4-3 DE. If we took Gregory there was no reason to pass on Watt in this past year's draft.

Seriously, dude is a full blown troll now.

We have a lot of young talent, and i'm not worried about the younger guys we drafted this year. Lewis already looks sharp, and I think Awuzie is actually the better player - I thought he'd go in the 1st. Woods will be another 6th round steal. Taco will be fine, he'll also be a guy we can slide inside in the future in certain packages if we want. Switzer is the forgotten man, but I think he'll start being dangerous next year, especially watching and learning from Cole.

Jaylon looks violent with limited snaps. I wouldn't be surprised if next year, or even towards the end of this year, he looks like a completely different player.

This could end up being a great draft after the epic 2016 one.

I think they went cheap in FA so they'd have $$ this year, but that's me. With so many secondary guys not worth their new contracts, and Free+Leary gone, save some cash and retool with some young talent in a DB heavy draft so we can sign some players actually worth a flip going into Dak and Zekes 3rd season. You'd still have all the players from 2016 for 2 years on their rookie contracts (with Zekes 5th year option), and a bunch of the young guys got a ton of reps this year. You'd also get to see who out of the DL was actually going to develop since we had a pretty heavy rotation of young guys with Lawrence only having a bit of a lead at the time, and even then he was no guarantee.

We just found our franchise QB last year. I wouldn't possibly sacrifice the last 2 years of Dak's rookie contract (and the other 2016 guys) because I just had to go allin for Super Bowl in his second season. Get another quality draft class in, see who has game, save some dough, then fix the holes while you still have the guys cheap.

This is all pretty much null if they just blow the next FA period though. And our FAs have been pretty weak, I'd have preferred to pay one "reliably sure thing" than who we did pay, but meh. I'm much more interested in what they do in Year 3 and 4 of Dak as far as FA.

Romo comes off the books this upcoming offseason, and we have 18 mill already for 2018. 10 mill this year, and that's 28 mill before the cap increases or any restructures. The cap has gone up 12 mill each of the last 2 seasons, so that's a possible 40 million in cap space. With another draft class.

If they spend halfway decently, then this crop of halfwits would have been worth it.
