Good is good and bad is bad

If Jaylon is a great player next year then how could the pick possibly be considered a fail?

Other than that I agree with your other points
In the salary cap era, the primary value of draft pick is during their rookie contracts. Once they are free agents, they cost as much as a free agent you could sign from another team.

Losing the first 2 years to mediocrity of a 4 year contract is not getting good value.

So no one thinks some of the other WR’s benefit A LOT from having Dez on the field? As much as analytics plays a role in sports, there still is strategy and the human element involved as well.

Is Dez overpaid? Yes. But what’s the alternative, you don’t resign him, allocate the money to defense and now T Williams is your #1 WR and Butler is #2?

The offense isn’t our problem. Give me the WR that commands the attention Dez does, who will still get his, and has the ability to take ANY game over despite who’s covering him. Not saying he will, but he has the ability to, and come playoff time, you need that.
He missed 3 games last year and they didn't miss a beat. In fact, the offense flowed more smoothly without him.

Well obviously not, but the NFL is not about who manages their rookie contracts the best. If Jaylon becomes a great player at the Mike, you have no issue signing him long term and in turn have a cornerstone piece to your roster for years to come.

This argument is sorely overlooked

They now check out all players ranked in their top 100+. The report about them requesting one of the top QBs to perform a specific drill comes to mind. It was 2 or 3 years ago with a player they had near zero chance of drafting.

They still make mistakes but McClay is drastically better than Ciscowski which seems obvious when you just compare their interviews.
I love McClay but Ciscowski's name is on the wall at The Star on the scouting report for Larry Allen.
He's not chopped liver.
