There's a tiny problem with that, though. Several reports (and again this is all unofficial but hear me out) have stated that the pregame inspection conducted by the referee is simply pass-fail. He doesn't write the pregame measurements, he simply passes or fails each ball.

Besides, that 12th ball is considered tainted evidence. If Dan Snyder was accusing the Cowboys of tampering with footballs, would you be comfortable with him submitting as evidence a ball that his team possessed for about an hour?

So it sounds like the most likely outcome from the beginning would be no evidence either way that this was done on purpose.

Know what would really exonerate them? Study footballs next year in extreme conditions and see if the PSI loss is consistent with the loss in PSI with the pats footballs. Doubt that happens though...

Plenty of studies on that matter have already been done, and it has been confirmed that Wells is talking to physicists from Columbia University. You don't even need extreme conditions. A drop from room temperatire to 50 degrees will drop the ball by 1 PSI. Here is my favorite video on the topic:

I guess I wasn't completely clear, but I meant under the same storage conditions and everything the Pats will ultimately claim they did, true or not. If it was literally a case where they inflated to the minimum, then left them out in the open, then I'd be inclined to blame the NFL for not having more specific rules. But again, I don't buy that this is what happened.

It's just more proof that having balls below the 12.5 PSI lower limit doesn't mean there was any tampering involved. Just Mother Nature.

It still doesn't explain why all of the Colts' footballs were not under the NFL limit.
