Goose on Norm

I was thinking about him today.

Unfortunately, he pops into my mind every year in late April.

Didn't he call the war room last year (or the year before) as some sort of prank?

It wouldn't surprise me if his old pickup truck is headed from Arkansas to Valley Ranch as we speak.

I sure hope not. I'm just hoping Jerry doesn't truly revert.

He doesn't fit what the Cowboys do on defense.

He's a good player, but he's for a Cover Two.

I'm thinking that he'll be a good safety prospect.... Will improve our Punt Returns and bring some needed good attitude to the D....

If I see him on the highway he never makes it to Valley Ranch.

If we have the cap room to sign 11 picks, then why not draft 11 guys? No, they all won't make the team, but a larger pool of players will increase the likelihood of "hits." And guys like Jay Ratliff and Chris Horton prove that even seventh rounders are potentially valuable. Sometimes Jerry is too clever by half, although he's shown a sensible streak of late. Let's hope that holds up.

it seems to me that we end up stockpiling alot of 6th and 7th rounders every year

hell, most of our picks this year are 5th round and after

Thanks man.

We need a good Fake Goose segment with draft time here. :)

As soon as I get home (around 5pm), I'll upload a couple that I have saved to youtube and post the link (they are freakin hilarious)

He was just on, nothing that big. He did say the cowboys have no chance at delmas or robiskie at 51. He also said the teams at the bottom of the first round are begging to get out and wont be able to.

Well then, according to Goose: Roy Williams #11 > 2009 First Round Pick #20 overall.

Right?

You guys who were mad about Felix must not ever watch the SEC. ;)

I agree. But last year's RB class was so incredibly deep that everyone had their pets. I liked Felix, but I liked Chris Johnson a little more. In any case, I'm not disappointed.

I scratched by head some on Bennett in the second round, but in the long run he could be great as well.

Right?

You mean 1st and 3rd rounders.:)

But if we play that game--and knowing Anquan Boldin could be had for about that--we have to ask is RW better than Boldin? I (and every head coach or DB in the league) would say "no way". And some would say not even close.

And we couldnt get Anquan Boldin last yr at the trade deadline, which makes your point moot. We traded for the best guy that was available. RW is not a scrub like some of you try to imply, he's a proven bigtime WR.

The point was that nobody forced us to make a trade last year. Those draft picks could just as easily be in hand right now. That is not to say it would better or worse because the past is the past....future the future.

I actually like RW okay and just hope he focuses better and more consistently the rest of his career. I hope to see 1000+ yards and 10 TDs and I think it's doable.

Nobody forced us to, but the team decided we needed to pull the trigger to help jumpstart the offense. Again, Boldin wasnt really available.

Further, there's no guarantee that even IF we still had a 1st and extra 3rd that Arizona would even agree to trade him here.

He was hurt last yr...he's a much better player than what he showed in limited time here. He'll be fine.

Exactly, no way in hell would Zona trade a stud WR like Boldin to an NFC contender like Dallas. Teams almost never do that. Most trades happen between AFC and NFC teams for a reason.

For example, Green Bay refused to trade Farve to the Vikes and even made the Jets agree to a penalty clause in the trade that would prevent the Jets from ever trading Farve to the Vikes.

There were reports that the Broncos would only agree to trade Cutler to the NFC.

So Zona would not trade Boldin to the Cowboys.

Our draft class looked better because everyone saw the field more or less.

Had Barber stayed healthy, I am sure some would be moaning that Choice was a wasted selection. Had Newman been healthy all season, Scandrick would not have played nearly as much.

I sort of agree. But it wasn't like we were a 5-11 or 6-10 team, no matter what Randy Galloway thinks. So if you're going 9-7 and having to rely on a bunch rookies, then that's pretty good. Scandrick seemed to be tough to keep off the field because Jenkins, Newman and Pacman got hurt and Henry was awful early on. Plus, we were using a lot of nickel and dime packages using an extra corner in place of a safety. The only guy that seemed to get playing time only due to injury was Choice. But I'm not so sure people would be boasting Choice was a wasted selection since he was excellent on special teams and you need somebody to backup Barber if he got hurt.

All those players that you mentioned about getting hurt allowed the team to see what those young guys could do...and they did pretty damn good for first year guys.

This is one time where injuries actually may have helped the Cowboys to see just what they got.

Here's what I got from Goose:

General stuff:
- Cowboys may be stuck at 51 with no trading partners if they wanted to trade. Guys you'll get in the second round are not really better than the third round. Goose said one GM in the middle of the second told him "we're stuck here" ... meaning he can't trade up and can't trade down. Goose is always talking in terms of $ bang for the buck in a given round and what he was saying I think was that regarding the player you get for the money, the very top of the second round is at one plateau then it drops. Around the third round you begin getting some $ bang for your buck again.
- Stafford: 60-40 the Lions take him.
- Crabtree may be the best player in draft
- DE Tyson Jackson will be in demand, picked real high. 4-3 and 3-4 teams both want him.
- Boom or bust? OT (left tackle) Andre Smith, Alabama, a guy you fear to take
- Size usually gets drafted early. Not good NT board. 10 big guys could go top 25 picks.
- Too many teams swing for HR in late rounds instead of a solid double ... You shouldn't take small school guys at this point, higher rate of busts. Take big school guys for their consistency and pedigree, better chances of these guys at least making your team

Players rising? None really in first few rounds.
- Glover Quin, CB/S from New Mexico has risen from 6 to 4 pick.
- CB Toler from St. Paul's is rising could wind up in 5th round

Anyone falling?
- Chase Coffman TE Missouri. Foot issue. Hasn't given league a 40 time. Could go from high 2 to late 4 based on injury.

Who will fall to Cowboys at 51? Norm throws out some names:
- Delmas, no
- Robiskie, no
- CB Alphonso Smith of Wake Forest, no
- Any of the 3 good centers? no
- DE Larry English, maybe
- DT/DE Jarron Gilbert, maybe

Who will go where:
- WR Iglesias: late 2nd high 3rd
- WR Massaquoi, late 2 high 3
- WR Pat Turner: 4th could go 3rd
- WR Tate: 4th rd.
- S Mike Hamlin 4th rd ... he's a "player of interest" for the Cowboys
- S McBath: 4th
- ILB Brinkley: high 5th
- QB Bomar, 5th round. Prolly won't drop to bottom of round where Boys are now though.
- QB Daniels: 5th rd.
- QB Branstader: 5th or 6th round

If I can piece together what Goose said this time and last, there are about 6 real good players at the top of the draft. Then a plateau of talent that's about the same level through the first three-four guys or so of the second round. Then another little drop of talent that extends through some or all of the third round.
