And if one actually pays attention, whatever success the Cowboys had was when they reduced Garrett's role and gave more responsibility to Tony. The comical nature of it was how Jerry tried to defend Jason as being a part of it..

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...-wants-tony-romo-to-work-like-peyton-manning/

Jerry tells us Romo is now going to be involved in game planning. Why didn't Garrett have him there when he was OC?

This was the same year Callahan started taking the reigns and Jerry made him play-caller.. And Callahan had already trashed the old running and blocking schemes. So it's clear he was making an impact that Jerry would even propose the idea and Romo would have approved.

Jerry brings in Linehan when Garrett starts interfering, but says that Garrett is no longer wanted on the offensive side of the ball. He also mentions that It wasn't fair to Callahan, because it was a different offense. It's clear that Callahan was changing the offense and Garrett felt threatened.

Jerry says Linehan allows them to keep the offense of Jason, but play-calling will be totally different. Jerry gushes in the off-season about the dynamic between Linehan and Romo and points out, before anybody was even talking about it in the media, that it's the most exciting aspect to the 2014 off-season.

Romo gets injured and the offense looks like a train wreck, because it's now essentially an offense that Romo saved last year through more involvement..

Now the offense looks better with Moore, because he's been under Linehan for three years and the WR routes look a little different, more like Detroit. And Moore is aggressive..

So Garrett offers absolutely nothing..

Whoa, whoa. I'm gonna stop you right here, home skillet. Where did I say "scrap the whole coaching staff"? In fact, where did I say "fire Garrett"? Go ahead. Search the thread. I'll wait...

Did you find it? No, of course not. Because I've said no such thing. The biggest mistake with Garrett has already been made -- that is, hiring him in the first place. When Garrett was hired, there was already a historically good franchise quarterback in place -- in the prime of his career, no less. Quarterback is literally the most difficult position to fill in all of professional sports, and it was handed to Garrett on a silver platter. Once you fill it, the going becomes much easier. Unfortunately, Garrett required significant on-the-job training (by Jerry's own admission) and was too inexperienced to take advantage of it. In essence, we squandered the prime years of the most statistically brilliant quarterback this franchise has ever seen for no reason other than developing a coach who, even after five years, remains mediocre -- this is an empirical reality. It's a mistake that's already been made. Firing Garrett won't fix it.

Now, back to your unfounded, emotionally-driven accusation that I want him fired. I try to avoid heated rhetoric whenever I can, and claiming someone should be fired certainly fits that bill. The decision to fire a coach is largely subjective and arbitrary. Yes, it incorporates facts and empirical data. Ultimately, however, those facts address what happened in the past and past performance is no guarantee of future performance. In other words, past success is no guarantee of future success, and past failures are no guarantee of future failures. Coaches are fired when front offices decide they've reached their potential for growth and results are still inadequate. I have no idea if Garrett has reached his potential for growth. I'm merely explaining what his current record and performance reflects: mediocrity.

Wow, excellent post!!!!

He had a rotator cuff injury the beginning of the season.. Why are you using only the last two years, particularly since the Saints are clearly in a rebuilding year with close to half of their roster the first year in the team..

When did Garrett ever get to 11-5 with Rob Ryan as DC? Hell Payton has a year taken away from him and he couldn't even make any decisions..

So Payton gets a pass for this season but Garrett doesn't? Even though Romo's missed 10 games?

Hilarious!

Bottom line: Garrett isn't going anywhere because unlike the fans, our front office is smart enough to realize that hitting the reset button essentially kills any chance of winning big in the Romo window.

Garrett doesn't get a pass because he didn't win the SB, choked three years in a row against NFC East opponents failing to make the play-offs, made 1 play-off, been here over 8 years, was demoted as play caller, had defenses changed for him to produce TOs to help out his ailing offense and so on..

Get Garrett out and promote Linehan, the Cowboys would be better without that much 'change'...

A year ago today we all LOVED Garrett and everything he was about. Your emotional response is based on a lost season without his QB.

The team leaders all love the guy and have echoed his mantras for years. If he loses the locker room? Then by all means, show him the door. But that hasn't happened.

HAH promote Linehan to head coach? That's your plan???

Just be glad you're able to vent as a fan and you're not actually making these decisions; I know I am.

I and many others have never "LOVED" Garrett. Despite the 12-4 record last year it was plain to see the majority of the big plays produced by this offense came via Romo and our other play makers ad-libbing.

It was very rare that we'd see a designed play result in chunk-yardage, except for the running plays.

To me the biggest indication that Garrett was doing a poor job was the slow starts the Cowboys routinely got off to last year. It usually took the Cowboys until the 2nd quarter for them to get into an offensive groove. They'd spin their wheels on offense the first 2-3 series seemingly on a weekly basis. That's a huge indicator that the game plan that the coaching staff painstakingly put together during the week is garbage. Romo being the good trooper that his is, ran the rudimentary game plans that were drawn up but after a few series they'd usually have to junk the master game plan and allow Romo to run the offense as his saw fit.

Basically Romo is the scheme.

Think about it, can you name more than 2 games from the 2014 season where the Cowboys' offense played great during the first two series of the game? It rarely happened.

So as you can see, I've never LOVED Garrett, and despite the success of the 2014 season, there was still plenty of evidence out there that shows he and his schemes are a detriment to the Cowboys.

We didn't all love Garrett.. The homers were looking for every excuse to say 'you see' and when Jerry 'stripped play-calling away from him', after the consistent defense of the homers that he was a brilliant play-caller and Romo kept checking out of his run play and Dez didn't know the playbook, they said 'you see'...

Many of us basically said, and were proven right, the more one removes Garrett from the equation, the better the team becomes. Romo got more power within the play-book and lo and behold, the team did better.

When he got injured, you saw how pathetic the coach was without Romo bailing out his trash offense..

And your claim to the team loving him is subjective. When they were blown out at Chicago and New Orleans two years ago, setting records in futility it could have been said they lost the team. Then we had the same homers saying he lost the team because Jerry brought in guys like Hardy and that's why Dez was yelling at the media out in the open...

Everybody 'loves' their HC when they play for him. But when he's fired, nobody cries and they move on...

And I said, we'd be better with Linehan than Garrett, I didn't say that was my plan... If it's that or Garrett, he'll yeah.. At least we wouldn't have made a play for Cassell and would have started Moore a lot sooner, as Broaddus reported and possibly had Romo coming in the field later without having to rush... Hell, even with Moore, who was Linehan's guy, the playcalling opened up because he was under Linehan for three years..

Cliche

Tuna Lite was semi retired when he got here, he was only here to recoup on the riches he lost in his divorce settlement.

Don't believe the fallen pebble okie dole

Parcells time in Dallas was much a do about nothing.

Yeah Bill was so disinterested that he made the playoffs his FIRST YEAR with Quincy Carter & Troy Hambrick as his two main offensive "cogs." But yeah coaching doesn't matter. Were you 5 years old when he was here?

The Romo window is nearly over.

Good to see someone other than Sturm calling it like it is.

You could put a DVD of the "seven habits of successful people" , a clapping sound track on and a card board cut of Jason and be better off because the card board cut out at least wouldn't make the clock errors he does.

He needs to go.

This could be the post of the decade about JG!! Hilarious!

Gosselin is a hack. You never hear from him during a 12-4 season do you? Blame coaching on the blown games that they were in right to the end. How about giving Garrett some credit once and a while for taking a team like Seattle to the final seconds with a worthless 2nd string QB. I'm sure Garrett didn't stick himself with Weeden. Coaching isn't going to do crap when your defense is completely out of gas at the end of a game because your offense can't string together 4 plays for most of the game. With a healthy Romo and Dez, for the season, they would have run away with this division easy.

It's obvious Dallas has some holes to fill. They've added some good players in the last few drafts. Now they're in a position to add a difference making player and get a 4th place division schedule next year. Let's hope someone can restrain Jerry from trading away the Cowboys future on draft day. I for one, have seen one too many coaching changes every few years just to shake things up and start over.

Because most of the posters here are tired of moral victories like the SEA game you reference. And except for two games there's no such thing as a 4th place schedule. Everyone in the division plays the same schedule. So I don't buy those two facets of your argument.

Jason's biggest mistake was benching Brandon Weeden(made worse with the release) if the coach had a backbone then he would've admitted he made a mistake and put Weeden back in as the starter.

By the end of the Seahawk game it was clear that Cassel was complete garbage.

Weeden had performed better than solid but had been a hard luck loser because the defense and overall discipline wasn't there the first 6 games or so, then NE came to town and their coaching staff totally dismantled ours. Garrett made Weeden the scapegoat for that and thus our season died right there.

The bleeped up thing about is our defense has become one of the better defenses in the league, but our offense had become down right dreadful with Cassel at QB.

I think we would've been right in the race had we not panicked and benched Weeden; then the idiotic release after it was clear that Cassel was trash. Maybe the worst QB performance I've seen in team history. He's actually playing with talent around him, Ryan Leaf and the scrubs between Aikman and Romo weren't.

W Weeden sitting on a 2-0 in Hou, this deserves a RT! The release of Weeden was down right stupid! Wouldn't surprise me if he lead the to SB in wide open AFC. Things like that have a way of coming back to make the cowboys look stupid and to bite them in the ***!

i think it is more to the fact that the only QB that this scheme we have is good for is Romo. Romo friendly or Romo dependent or whatever you want to call it.

JG and staff cant adjust at all whatsoever no matter what they say to the fact.

Well, Dallas is the only team in their division that had to play Green Bay and Seattle. Washington got a 7-8 Rams and 6-9 Chicago. So not so much the same.
