***Gurode released*** MERGED

The Cowboys will save $5.5 million by releasing C Andre Gurode. They were $6.6 million under before doing O. Scandrick contract.

Per KFFL.com,
The Dallas Cowboys have released C Andre Gurode after the two sides were unable to agree on a restructured contract.

Looks like they would have kept him around but his contract was too high for his perceived value.

Not correct. He isn't counting the $1.6M in dead money this and next year. The real number is $3.9M in savings this year and $4.9M next year.

He probably should have said "Jerry" and not "Cowboys"

Gone are the days of the 350+ mammoth leaning on other teams. Dallas is going more athletic and Gurode being released is just another sign of that. If Houck does indeed retire after this year it will be interesting to see what kind of coach they bring it to go along with this new philosophy. If I had to venture a guess now I would say Mike Sullivan from San Diego will get a long hard look.

Yep. Those thinking that Gurode is going to the Eagles ... not a chance. Howard Mudd is specifically running off all of the former fatties like Max Jean Giles, Nick Cole and Jamaal Jackson to bring in quicker, more athletic linemen to run his scheme. The Eagles just confirmed today they're starting two rookies on the OL themselves, including their 6th round draft pick, on Week 1.

It's becoming a more perimeter based game, including offensive linemen who can get to the perimeter for all the draw plays, direct snaps, bubble screens, option pitches, etc.

This is interesting. Should be a fun season in the NFCE this season.

Gurode is probably done. Might be able to find work in Oakland, or in the middle of the season if someone goes down with injury.

We'll see how it turns out. Costa better bring his big boy helmet.

I know that Gurode has his foiables, but he could anchor vs. really strong NT and DTs. I'm not so sure our new guys can do that. It will be interesting. I have visions of Romo running for his life early in the season.

Okay, someone please explain to me the benefit this year of cutting Gurode. He is most certainly better than Costa at this point, correct? And it's not like we're going to use the extra cap space in any way this year, right? And do we all agree that Gurode, while not as good as he used to be, is still a very good player? I'm being very serious... I'm just a bit out of the loop on this subject. I'm actually hoping I'm wrong, that's why I'm asking. Thanks in advance.

Good points and a good post. Upon further review, you're probably right about Gurode and the Eagles.

That said, Mudd and the 'Birds have issues on their line and their answers seem much worse than ours right now.

The playbook calls those plays designed bootlegs. :laugh2:

Gotta admit, this one shocks me. Phil Costa, you better be the goods man.

The last link to the Campo years. Now if we could just get rid of Campo.

I agree with everything you wrote.

What's funny is maybe these coaches know what they are doing!

Think about the Oline so far this season. Has it been exposed? IMO they have played better then I've seen in years. Now, yes it is pre-season, but I can remember going into the season last year with a negative feeling, because we did nothing to change the line, outside of Free, after the debacle that was the Minny game.

I love the moves. We have all been begging for change for years and now it's here. Enjoy it! The ride is going to be fun.

Very surprised after getting the text from espn saying he was released but it all makes sense. Giving young guys the chance and an impact. Jason has been around hall of famers and legends. I think we believe in him and he knows whats right. This is a jason move not jerry

My bet is that he ends up in San Fran.

Probably looking to add someone else this year and need the cap room to do it.

The cynic in me wonders if this shift in the league coincides with players abilities to take illegal supplements without detection.

I remember Nate talking about how much the game changed when the NFL started testing for steroids. His comment was something like "now the fat boys can play ball again." Of course, that was a long time ago, and people on the other side have had all that time to find ways to beat the system.

If smaller quicker athletes are able and willing to achieve an acceptable strength level through whatever means, then it doesn't make sense to keep "fatties" around anymore.
