Hindsight's 20/20... how many other NFL teams do you think would go back and draft Romo? What about Colston higher than the 7th? Barber higher than the 4th? We have just as many "should have" draftees as every other team in the game.

WR- Mike Sherrard

I was going to post Mike Sherrard but you beat me to it.

There were a couple of guys we drafted in the early 60s but they signed with the AFL instead:

C/LB E.J. Holub and OG Billy Shaw

Wright got as much of a shot as he deserved after he quit on the team to have surgery when we needed him. He could have waited on the surgery from what I remember. Plus he wasn't that good. Was he better than Leaf or Hutch? Not much.

Wright has gone on to have a nice career as a back-up in this league. He is what he is: a back-up. But he is far better than Leaf and Hutchinson who didn't play very much in the NFL after they left the Cowboys.

John Jett (former Cowboy who was not re-signed) and Jesse Armstead (former Hurricane who thought Jimmy was going to draft him)

Interesting thread concept. Some positions simply don't have much to offer, but some do I'm going to look at it as someone we had on the roster rather than passed on in a Draft. I'm going to ***** a little bit and name guys we did Draft but traded or who signed with an AFL team instead.

QB...Steve DeBerg
RB...Herschel Walker (honorary mention to Calvin Hill)
FB...Tony Richardson
WR...Jimmy Smith
WR...Antonio Bryant
TE...Todd Christensen
OT...Steve Wisniewski
OG...Ron Stone
C...E.J. Holub
OG...Kevin Gogan
OT...Oliver Ross

DE...Coy Bacon
DT...La'Roi Glover
DT...Russell Maryland
DE...Chris Canty
OLB...Hollywood Henderson
MLB...Ken Norton, Jr.
OLB...Randall Godfrey
CB...Aaron Kyle
SS...Roy Williams
FS...Brock Marion
CB...Ryan McNeil

This is mental gymnastics.

Everson Walls won a Super Bowl and had six picks for the 1990 Giants, a year after leaving Dallas.

Ken Norton Jr. had stellar career after leaving Dallas for San Francisco.

Do coaches count? Because Mike Ditka and Dan Reeves did a lot after moving on as head coached.

I'll tell you Dallas' most regretted draft day decisions as far as players passed on because of flawed scouting or character reports:

Joe Montana 1979
Mike Singletary 1981
Jerry Rice 1985
Corey Raymer 1995
Terrell Davis 1995
Curtis martin 1995
Tony Brackens 1996
Randy Moss 1998
Tom Brady 2000
Drew Brees 2001
Ed Reed 2002
Steven Jackson 2004

Now the biggest draft day STEALS Dallas has ever had are:

Roger Staubach 1969
Emmitt Smith 1990
Brock Marion 1993
Larry Allen 1994
Dexter Coakley 1997
Jason Witten 2003
Jay Ratliff 2005
Marion Barber 2005
Orlando Scandrick? 2008 (Stay Tuned)

Jerry Rice would have been our pick if SF hadn't traded in front of us and stole him.

You can add almost drafted rueage like DT Shaun Rogers ("I have seen the X-rays.") and LB Kendrell Bell.

Herschel Walker could be added to this list for what the trade did for us as well as his production before it. 1985 draft, 5th round, 114th pick. Not bad for what it ended up doing for the franchise.

I wouldn't count Walker. Like you said, what we got was worth losing three Herschels. It is not like what he did with Minnesota or the Eagles was great enough to justify rueage.

I'm not sure if Steve DeBerg would be 'one that got away.' He had a solid career but nothing special other than his couple years in KC.

He was drafted by us in 1977, which means if we had kept him he probably would have competed with Danny to replace Roger, then again Roger said that part of the reason he retired was because he thought Danny was ready to take over.

I'd take Danny White over Steve DeBerg any day. I think we won out on that one.
