Hard Knocks | Bobby Carpenter 1st Segment

Brady James was considered by many to be a bust until his 3 year in Dallas, where Parcells said he had the best camp of anyone. Still he didn't see any real playing time until his 4th ( and breakout season). I'm not a big brady James fan and the overall talent at lb wasn't near what it is today.

I know people say James was drafted later than Carp, but to me that is incedental. I have been patient with carpenter for several reasons. 1st was in his rookie year midway thru the season Ellis got hurt and he was moved back outside. He started in the playoff loss to detroit, and I felt he had a solid game. The ellis injury carried over into his 2nd season where he was eventually switched back inside. He had nerve damage in his neck that made him appear soft to the new coaching staff, he was labled and sat for the year. Wade Phillips comments about Carpenter where always the same "He stays later and is working hard and we hope that will translate to the field." This season he is getting more playing time and makeing more plays. Definite progress has been showed this offseason. Dallas has a history of giving up on players and they go other places and shine. Jimmy Smith wr jacksonville, Oliver Ross OT who went to the steelers to come into his own, ron stone who became a all pro og for the giants to name a few. Carp is not a ray lewis mlb, but then again neither is any mlb we have. Bobby Carpenter is making pregress and busting his butt to get better. He hasn't had one full season at mlb yet, without being moved outside. It is a new position for him, and he has had challenges absorbing it all mentally. This preseason he has showed good progress lets see how it all turns out by seasons end, before we cut him and he goes to the Patriots and becomes a 8 time probowler for them.

I see no big deal in the columbo incedent. Carpenter knows he has been labels as soft and a bust. If he has to go 100% on every play in every situation to change that perception that so be it. I would rather him be mr dedicated , piss people off, and get results, than not do it, and be a cool guy who is a bust. Prossman

Brady James is meesage board pariah (for whatever that's worth), but let's not confuse the two here.

Bradie James was one of our best special teams players by his rookie year. He had worked his way to part time starter by his 2nd year. He was a full time starter by his third year. Bradie James kept working his way up, and earning a bigger role on the team in 3 years.

Bobby Carpenter has been working the opposite direction in his three years.

Looks like Bobby is coming around to me.

I hope that is the case. He clearly has been a disappointment up to this point. While we know he will not have a starting role I would hope to see him make some kind of impact on this team this year

One thing I didn't understand though ... Jerry and Stewart were calling him a finesse guy, but it seemed the OL were mad at him for being too physical in practice. Carpenter is in a no win situation there, and he's right to err on the side of pleasing the coaches over pleasing the OL.
Looked to me like it was a walkthru-type practice, and there's a certain pace that everyone goes at. Bobby was going too hard in it, and the OL thought it was making them look bad.

(I don't think there were any Demarcus Wares that we passed on in that draft, though.)

And hey, Rack... Most of your post to me didn't make any sense at all. Too bad calling me names can't make Bobby play any better.

I'd say Carpenter has been static. The main problem I see is they never put him one place and let him play. Outside, no inside...no outside...inside, weakside...no strongside.

One might argue he hasn't established himself in one place or the other through his play, but I'd argue the staff hasn't given him an opportunity to succeed. The adjustment mentally and technique-wise is hard enough from college to the pro level. However, when you are continually moved around, you never develop a comfort level.

This year the staff seemed more committed to putting him in one spot and letting him sink or swim and it seems he's finally starting to emerge. I don't think that's a coincidence.

That said, we'll see what happens when the lights come on, because based on what I saw last night, he could use a little more physicality to his play.

Even if you say the Barbie Carpenter stuff was "friendly banter" (which I doubt it was), what surely wasn't banter was Leonard Davis suggesting that Marc Colombo punch him right in the face.

Basically, when they were on the bench, talking about him, they weren't just kidding around, I don't think

Based on Hard Knocks, it sounds like Carpenter has played soft since his arrival ... and maybe is only now becoming more physical.

"Barbie" Ouch! That's going to stick. (Fairly or unfairly)

There was something that disappointed me about Bobby Carpenter that I saw in last nights Hard Knocks. Bobby knew that the defense did not have enough players on the field when Houston was in scoring position late in the game. He knew this, but he did not motion to the sidelines for anyone and he did not call time out. He was making the defensive calls, but did not have enough confidence to call time out. He then calls out the line backer that runs onto the field after Wade and the rest of the sidelines called time out.

I think that further demonstrates his passive nature. I didn't like the pick, but I am rooting for the guy to show something and contribute. I hope he does something this year.

I had no idea there were "finesse" linebackers. How do you "finesse" a RB or QB to the ground?

Thats a good question, the word "finesse" and Linebacker should not be used in the same sentence..I was kinda taken-back when I heard that word used with him.

I agree, Bradie james was a pretty decorated player coming out of lsu. He played well on special teams in 03 and 04. He struggled at outside w lb in 04 but the defensive change in 05 gave him the opportunity and he excelled.

He has had three 100 plus tackle seasons in a row and has been voted captain of the defense by his teammates.

I am pulling for bobby. Bradie and Bobby are the same size and carpenter is on the same track as bradie as far as a special teamer but I dont know that they are the same as a linebacker. You could see bradies physical play in 03 on special teams when he was forcing fumbles etc...and then he forced his way on the field in 04.

I hope carpenter turns out to be like bradie but I dont think he will.

The only thing that surprises me is his toughness. I definitely thought he would at least bring a hard-nosed careless, break-neck approach to the game.

I hope I'm wrong about this.

I thought he was the perfect fit for this defense coming out of college. A big, fast, versatile LB that had spent some time with his hand on the ground. Even if he didn't become a Ware, he was versatile enough to play inside or out, provide some pass rush, contribute on specials and was athletic enough to be capable in the passing game.

However, I've pretty much given up on him at this point. He plays soft. In three years, outside of 1.5 sacks, he hasn't made any plays. I would kind of expect him to make a play or two when he is getting serious PT against guys that are going to be bagging groceries in a week or so.

"finesse" linebacker ...

Thats an oxymoron where I grew up.

That made me mad when I heard that. However, what really galled the heck of me was when he was called a "punk az ****" and let it go. During a game I can understand but at practice I would have beat his ***.

Carpenter sounds like some of my college roomates. Dude. Chill out Bra. Stop beasting me to the ground, totally not cool.

Hawk made him look better than he was. That simple.

Any FF or ints last year? I doubt it. Carpenter gets hated on for no reason on here. On the biggest stage i saw Carpenter play the best game on defense and Bradie James get toasted by Jeremy Stevens. But, thats too much truth for this thread topic.

I gave you the following answer.

Code:
G TOT SOLO AST PD SACK FF REC INT YDS TD
78 355 247 108 15 5.5 3 0 1 15 1

Now you are asking the following:

I smell the hate on you and it smells funny. BTW, what in the heck does Bradie’s performance have to do with Barbie’s performance?

If you can’t tell that Bradie is playing infinitely better then Barbie then there is no help for you.
