Has any great QB had a crueler run than Tony Romo?

The Dallas Cowboys superstar stood in front of a group of expectant reporters, battled back his deep disappointment and got choked up.

“That’s my quarterback,” warbled Terrell Owens.

It was 2008, so long ago that there was hardly a Twitter audience around to make a meme out of it. Owens’ quarterback was Tony Romo, who was being blamed for a playoff loss to the New York Giants only a year after he was blamed for another playoff loss, in Seattle, when he fumbled a field-goal snap.

Owens did his best to stand up for the 27-year-old passer. Romo did his best to shrug it off. “I don’t live with regrets,” he said at the time.

That statement is up against the ultimate test now, as he’s the backup to rookie Dak Prescott after a back injury suffered in the preseason has kept him out all season. Romo waited years to be in a position to lead Dallas on the field after going undrafted in 2003 – he was a holder for two seasons – and then he waited even longer after the botched hold in Seattle for a greater chance to get the Cowboys back to the Super Bowl. Now, finally, his team is good enough at 8-1 and he’s watching from the sideline. It’s as if he trained a thoroughbred from birth, wrangled him into the starting gate at Churchill Downs, and then choked on dust as the horse took off with another rider.

I hope it's not over yet. I hope we see him play this year. I still believe he is better than Dak. I know I am in the minority now.

I agree with the decision to stick with Dak, but I don't see how anyone could argue that he is a better QB physically, technically or mentally than Romo. As I've stated throughout the season, there's simply no valid argument IMO when you're comparing a rookie to a 10+ year vet who has mostly been at an elite level throughout. The team made the decision to stick with Dak for reasons other than an individual skill comparison.

It depends on what you mean by better. Is he more accurate and better at reading defenses? Yes. Is he better at running an offense, protecting the ball, and winning games? No. which is more important?

Jim Kelly made it to the SB 4 times, yes all losses, but his career , most of which where his choices, really not worse than Romo. Romo, who i feel had an organization try their best to screw things up for Romo compared to making things easier. Scouting was bad for a while, coaches were bad, FO just sat there and Romo is standing there like the old lady in the car insurance company saying "thats not how it works, thats not how any of this works"

Tony's run isn't totally over just yet. He has another half-season to go with Dallas before possibly committing to another team. It promises to be interesting to see what the future holds regarding Romo's future and I'm just hoping he gets a good shake from the team he ends up with, even if he ultimately elects to remain with Dallas. His contract is one that may cause complications for a prospective team to deal with. If that is destined to be worked out, may his days with another team lead him to further success -- perhaps even more than he ever had with us.

don't think you're a minority in thinking Romo is a better QB than Dak. I think though, many, including myself, see Dak as the better QB option at this point and for this offense. His ability to run, extend plays, etc. brings a dimension that is no longer part of Romo's game and a huge part of our game plans in keeping opposing dfenses off guard.

I wish the writer of this piece would have pointed out Tony has had 3 different head coaches, numerous different OC's (Payton, Sparano/Haley, Garrett, Callahan, and Linehan), had to endure bad offensive lines for most of his career, had to put up with cancerous free agent signings, until recently bad drafts, and a meddling owner. I wonder how Tom Brady would have faired playing in Dallas under the same conditions?
