If the contract is reasonable go for it, he has proven his worth in the past, and who is to say that a top-tier rookie will be able to come in and outperform him? Get a DE 1st or 2nd round and sign Spencer as well. Whoever has the better camp take them as the starter. Hell in that case we will have depth as well as good starters on the line.

We need Spencer?

As a stop-gap? As a savior? As that one player who could get us over the hump and go into the playoffs?

Childs, this defense aint going nowhere. so relax. Let us hope Jerra will play the youngsters and not go back to the same-old, same-old veterans who play an OK game when they are healthy.

Lets just rebuild. Let the chicks fall where they may. Spencer won't help take this defense anywhere.

Chicks...........Freudian slip.

....team. Maybe a 3-4, but not Dallas.

Spencer was a 4-3 DE in college he had to learn the 3-4 in Dallas which required him to drop into coverage as well as play on the line. Going to the 4-3 should not be a big issue for him. Main concern is the recovery from this injury.

what is freudian? Don't make me report you to the unibrow mod. . .

Sigmund Freud was a pioneering psychiatrist who postulated that much of our behavior is influenced by our subconscious pre-occupations.

In his opinion, much of that thought is sexual in nature.

In your post, the word chicks was used instead of chips, which could be characterized as evidence of your pre-occupation with hot babes,
hence the term "Freudian slip".

Such slips may be dangerous when occurring in the presence of one's spouse.

uh, no. I meant let the ships fall. As part of my deal with the PO my mom monitors now what ever I write so i want to keep it clean. Let the ships fall where they might or they sink.

I hate to admit this, but it might be prudent to bring Anthony Spencer back with a contract shaped similarly to that of Henry Melton, but certainly more limited in scope given his age and the fact that he was given 20 million dollars, 10 of which he didn't earn a dime of.

Normally I would be completely against bringing Anthony Spencer back. I want entirely new blood on this defensive line, it's beyond time, but then it dawned on me. if we could get Spencer for a deal similar to Melton's in which we take no long term risk if he doesn't pan out (and also don't really pay him for the first year), he would be motivated to play extremely well, and finish his rehab as soon as possible. Two years ago he was our best defensive player. Low risk, high reward.

That isn't the only reason why I've changed my mind. I've been thinking of the difficulty of getting two defensive ends out of this draft and trying to incorporate them into the starting lineup. It's a lot to ask for. And quite frankly in the first round if CJ Mosley is available, I think he might be able to help this defense more short term and long term than any of the defensive ends we might get in the first round. Bruce Carter is in his contract year, we should see what he has to him, if there is anything. Sean Lee, CJ Mosley, and Bruce Carter (playing up to potential) could be a pretty great linebacker corps. Of course this is assuming he makes it to 16, which isn't terribly likely.

Also there is no hurry to re-sign Anthony Spencer who doesn't even appear to be healthy. You could almost certainly sign him after the draft, so this is entirely based on the direction we go in the draft.

How many injured DL's do we need? If we could get him at the minimum, then sure. Otherwise, no thanks. Progress stopper.

@jonmachota: Stephen Jones told @BenRogers and @SkinWade that the Cowboys would love to have Jared Allen and Anthony Spencer if the price is right.

I could see something similar to Melton's, with the "It's either a 1 year or 4 year" kinda thing. But the first year would need to be much less than what Melton is getting. And the ultimate size of the contract smaller.

Spencer owe us , i wouldnt pay that guy nothing but the league minimum

Why would Spencer owe us anything for year's past? He was offered a contract by the team and signed it. Many players get hurt and can't play. The players worked hard to get to the point they got some pay after getting hurt. I don't remember people screaming about Peyton Manning not fulfilling his contract when he got hurt. I'll bet some whined about it but we didn't hear about it that I know of. If he can play this year at 90+% then I'd like to have him for the right price. We got eaten up over Selvie's side last year with the run. You don't have a lot guys who can stand up on that side to the run and still rush the passer well.

I would be all for bringing spencer back, but ONLY if he can actually get on the field and practice...he has to show that he can get push from that leg, and it sounds like he can barely walk....he wouldn't stand up to the rigorous NFL 7-day a week schedule, let alone be able to handle opposing OL....

prove it to me spencer, prove it
