Have to sign Dez before Denver signs Thomas

If we wait, I have a feeling we'll pay for it. It's a shame we won't be able to negotiate until the end of the season. I still believe signing Dez is the key to all of our other free agency moves, especially when it comes to re-signing Murray.

It's good to hear that Denver has tabled talks with both Thomases. That may buy us time. I've been thinking a while that Denver is a year ahead of us in everything. I don't want them setting the bar here.

They have money to play him top C.johnson cash???

They got manning... Ware... and some other pretty well paid off pieces and they still have cash??

Cowboys have $23m of dead money this season that, if it was available, would have allowed the Cowboys to keep Ware, Hatcher, and resign Dez sooner.

That dead money hurts and creates an uneven playing fields against the Cowboys.

Too many worry about what will happen in the off-season instead of stopping and taking in what is looking to be a miraculous season we are having thus far. There will be time later to talk about all that stuff instead of worrying about it now by starting multiple threads about the future.

This team has been a walking cluster for years now and we are finally having a great start to the season and instead we are worrying about who we will sign, who we must cut and other issues usually not discussed until the off season...

OR are we so programmed to feel like we are out of the race this early like in past seasons that we feel the need to want to move on to next season already with the old there is always next season mantra.

Just seems odd having a multitude of these threads when we have the best record in the NFL right now.

Who knows, maybe I am just being a cantankerous old man on this topic, but I don't think it is the case.

You're forgetting that that dead money includes releasing Ware and Hatcher in the first place.

It's not that we couldn't afford these players, and this is a popular misconception. It's that we couldn't mortgage this team's future hoping to get a full return on investment on aging players.

The dead money drops significantly next year to about 8 million, though will probably rise with the release of Carr and Free, that being said if both are June 1st cuts, the dead money will be significantly less for 2015.

That's an assumption based on your own bias. The reality is people can do both. The reality is that this is just a message board, and many people like to think ahead, not that either aspect has any influence on how the team does. Fail to plan and you plan to fail. So it is understandable to have these discussions now.

If the Cowboys front office is thinking about this stuff now as they should be, they should be putting together a 3-5 year plan for the Cowboys.

But the good news is that dead money comes off the cap for next season, so we are going to have somewhere around $30 million in cap space to sign Dez, Murray, RO, and maybe even 1 big ticket free agent like Suh.

We are at a disadvantage this year, but next year we can really make some moves.

Dez already said with a smile that they will get a deal done. That's all I care about.

He is a lifer!

I'm not sure you can really say we were at a disadvantage, I think the team calculated the cap really wisely this year. You can note that they didn't push as much money forward with restructures this year.

Jason Witten was not restructured, nor was Brandon Carr. These matter a lot going forward. Brandon Carr will almost certainly be cut if he doesn't take a significant pay cut next year.

Yea, you can give Dez a 7 or 8 year contract like they did with Tyron Smith and spread the money out and it will not be that big of a cap hit. Besides, the new TV contracts will kick in and raise the cap in the coming seasons as well.

Thank you.

I agree with the Brain but while we are here on this topic I will commend jerry for taking care of the class of 2016 already except maybe Crawford we got everybody we need signed up for more football. 2015s class on the other hand will be quite the news when the axe comes down and we don't resign them all. Overall our cap is looking good and the most important new rule is that the cap space can now be carried over from year to year with no penalty. Dallas doesn't need to use it all...we can push it forward. Smart.

Why does it upset some if we choose to talk about next year? Folks live in the past, present and future - different styles you know. I have always been a future guy. It's what I like. But don't think for a second that I am not enjoying this marvelous Cowboys present too.

Don't you know it. The last crap load of years we would be yelling about how bad things are from jocks to socks.
I'll let the front office guys worry about this stuff, they don't seem half as worried as some fans are.

I thought free was an URFA? His reworked contract that he agreed to cut the number of years from what i thought i remembered. He won't be dead money if that is the case.

I don't think Thomas is getting as much as you think. Teams are starting to smarten up to idea that is more about systems. The Eagles will probably be one of top passing attacks in league by end of seasons....quick who is their #1 WR? Thats right...they don't have one.
