His price is gonna be out of our range. I don't see how Seattle is a good fit for him, no way will they feature him as the main pass rusher.

That's a fallacy. Fact is with our moves, Dallas can afford Melton. The real question is does Dallas want to pay him what others are offering. And I like the thinking here. Everyone knew we would be on Melton's radar. He's a local boy, his agent has had many clients with Dallas and from what I can tell they have a good working relationship. So why not have Melton go out and see what he can get before he comes to Dallas. There was no way he wouldn't get here at least before taking an offer.

Dallas can afford whatever they decide they want to afford. That's a non-issue.

But I think Helton/Crawford will play the 1-tech 3-tech and have a good rotation with McClain and Bass and Selvie at DE and a 2nd rd pick for the other DE also I'm starting to think that Josh Brent is going to be apart of the club come June of course this is just my opinion.

Now we have McClain and Mincey joining the super powered Bass and Crawford to destroy the rest of the NFL? I can't wait to see the destruction.

It's just insanity reading stuff like that. "and then we got McClain and Bass and Selvie...."

There are fans that will accept anything with this team.

Let's say they draft a great DT in the first, get an above average DE in the second, and sign Melton. I know they like Crawford a lot, and Selvie was certainly serviceable. Add Hayden, Bass, Mincey, and McClain as backups, and you know Jerry has Josh Brent penciled in for the future.

That is better than what they had last year with an AWOL Ratliff, injured Spencer, Ware, Bass, and Craword.

And none of them will be albatrosses from a salary standpoint. It's definitely the way to go, whether it is just a rebuilding phase or they catch fire quickly. The pass rush the past three seasons has been abysmal.

It seems as if we are his back up plain if he doesn't get big money from the teams he visits first.

And what if they don't? Are you saying go into the draft and take a DT and DE with the first two picks regardless of what's on the board?

Who is this DE that is going to give you what Ware has given you? Not last year which was the exception to the rule but over his career. If the Cowboys kept Ware they wouldn't be counting on a repeat of 2013. Who is the DE in round 2 that is going to be a force off the edge his rookie year?

Why do you mention Nick Hayden and Ben Bass? If these guys are quality depth, you can literally include anyone on an NFL roster to that list. Hayden was horrible last year. Bass has done nothing in this league. These guys have no pedigree and have no proven production in meaningful NFL games.

Say we don't add a "great DT in the first, get an above average DE in the second". Say we miss?

Banking exclusively on the draft, an inexact process which does have variables like other teams vying for the very same "great DT" and "above average DE" is taking a risk.

I get how you can hope for that, wish desperately it happens. But that should not be a substitute for doing what you can to ensure you do not have to do that.

For the record, I am at that point of desperation that getting Melton is almost crucial. Sad it has to be that way, but it is pretty much the reality.

It is just sad to be in a "got to get this player or bust". In free agency or the draft.

I would agree with that. All things equal, I don't doubt he wants to play for the Cowboys.

This has always been Jerry's strength. The mystique of the Cowboys. As bad as he is here, he'd be an even worse owner in another NFL city where he doesn't have that advantage. An advantage he did nothing to create, by the way. Tom and Tex can take a bow on that. If anyone's interested in shoveling for a few hours.

I would agree that if Mike Evans is sitting there at #16, you have to think hard about it. Don't turn away exceptional players because of need. But more than likely, there's usually a group of 2-3 equal guys, and you choose the one you need most.

Anybody can give Dallas what Ware did last year. He was useless, and he'll be hurt again. That neck and shoulder have been getting worse and worse for several years.

Melton would replace and improve Hatcher, I think. And I don't think Hayden was horrible at all; he just played way too many snaps and got too exposed. Bass is unproven, but he's better than Drake Nevis and Corey Irvin, I strongly suspect. Same for Mincey and McClain.

The bottom line is, they've got to get younger across the line. Spencer, Ratliff, Hatcher, and Ware looked good on paper, but they're yesterday's heroes.

If I were Melton,, I would use Dallas desperation to drive up the price somewhere else.

This was an 8-8 team with the worst defense in the NFL. If he thinks Marinelli, himself, etc, can improve on that, he may see it quite differently.

Plus, he's from here and he loves his old coach in Chicago.

All scary and true.

We'll see what Will McClay is made of.

As much as I like the idea of Melton, I am little concerned about giving him big money. Was he a product of Marinelli? Because before his injury this year, he was really bad.

And now he is coming off ACL surgery. Just not sure if he merits a big contract. Concerned.
