We can't take on Romos dead money in a trade and take on Smiths cap hit as well. No way. This is why using Romo's contract to restructure and push dead money into later years was a mistake.

Unless every detail is known none of us know for sure what we can or can't do. Smith isn't due anymore guaranteed money according to the article which makes him tradable. If he or Romo is traded contracts are going to have to be worked out with their new teams. What can be done can only be determined if you know everyones cap situation and what key players they need signed during the offseason. Only time will tell what's going to happen and what can or can't be worked out.

if only Romo wasnt so injury prone, this whole issue would be so much easier.
despite his talent he appears to be broken down. huge risk for the money. for us as well as any trade partners.
i think nothing may happen for quite some time.

The injury concerns are why it's going to be very difficult getting anything of value for Romo in a trade. He went down in week 2 in 2015 and in preseason this season after only a few passing attempts. It makes it difficult for any team to risk a nice draft pick for a QB who's body is breaking down and could end up laying on the turf again after a solid hit. They could very easily end up in the boat we've been in the past 2 seasons having to go with a backup QB. It's not Romo's ability to play at a high level, he can do that, it's his lack of ability to stay healthy. It's perplexing how so many on this board ignore his age and the injury concerns with him, thinking we can get a bevy of draft picks for him.

Romo's value has been greatly reduced due to his age and injuries but some of you just can't seem to come to grips with that. He's missed games with injuries the past 4 seasons and the past 2 seasons he's only played 2 full games. He's had 3 different back injuries since 2013 and has to be given days off in practice. He's going to be a HUGE gamble for any team that picks him up and they're going to need a solid backup in the event he goes down. Every team has seen what's happened with Romo the past 2 seasons, he's not going to be a long-term answer for anyone. The only real value he has would be for a SB ready team that's in a WIN NOW mode, hoping he can get them where they want to go in a year or two before another significant injury sidelines him and likely retires him.

Most aging QBs who have injury concerns that have been in Romo's situation have been released because they carry a huge risk. Sure, if Romo was 30 and wasn't coming off so many injuries his value would be very high but that's not the case but some of you just don't get it. With the situation he's in, possibly contemplating retirement and knowing it's going to be difficult getting anything of real value for him in a trade due to his injury concerns, a swap for Alex Smith would be a lot better than nothing and nothing is what we may end up with.

Romo isn't going to be here next season, he's either going to be traded or released. If we could get something for him that would benefit us and him we need to do it. Ending up in KC would give Romo a chance to succeed and Alex Smith would give us a chance to stay afloat if Dak goes down. The type of middle of the field offense we run and having a great young back would work real well with the type of game Smith has.

Let's say we cut or trade Romo for a 5th Rd pick
He goes to one of these teams and they win the SB next year

What is that worth to them? And if those teams did not think Romo could do that they would not pick him up so they clearly believe it

How stupid and idiotic does our FO look?

We're going to cut or trade Romo, it's inevitable we have no choice and if he does go off and win a SB with another team, that's the way it goes. No one is going to look at us and say how stupid we were to move on from him due to his age, injuries and after the great season Dak had. Romo had 10 years here but his body is breaking down and with his job filled the time has come for us to move on from him.

We lost a season in 2015 due to losing him to injury and this season likely would have gone down the drain had we not struck gold with Dak. We can't go forward with Romo any longer because he can't stay healthy, makes too much money to be on the sidelines carrying a clipboard and we have a new starting QB.

Romo is twice the QB Alex Smith is, and even KC knows it
Alex Smith is twice the QB Tony Romo is because in the last several years Smith is usually on the field and Romo is not. And, pray tell, young liege, which of the two was healthy all year and played in the playoffs?

Romo is better than Alex Smith but he's almost 5 years older and he can't stay healthy, plus he has a big contract. He also has the same 2-4 playoff record as Smith. Alex Smith is a bus driver who isn't nearly as productive as Romo but he's more mobile and a very good runner. He doesn't turn the ball over near as much as Romo. Smith had a pretty solid, efficient season leading the Chiefs to a 12-4 record and I just don't see them thinking Romo is the QB to get them over the hump when he hasn't gotten some Cowboys teams that were better than KC over the hump. Going with a QB that will certainly be more productive but will turn the ball over a lot more and can't use his legs to scramble isn't going to be the answer.

Splendid thesis, bloke. You always dig deeper and come out with deliberate and thoughtful responses. You're another reason why CZ is tops!

The Texans and Broncos don't seem to be interested and I can't see KC dumping Alex Smith for Romo after he just led the Chiefs to a 12-4 record and has the same 2-4 playoff record as Romo. Buffalo wouldn't be a great landing spot for Romo, they just had a 7-9 season and will have a new HC. No new HC is going to want to start their tenure with an aging, injury prone QB who has a fat contract and isn't likely to stay healthy the entire season. In my opinion AZ is the best fit if Palmer retires or the Cards decide to move on, if they feel they could get Romo. AZ is very close, they just need an efficient QB and Romo would be an upgrade over Palmer who's been inconsistent and appears to be on the decline.
Another great post!
My wish, however, is that Cleveland, with the biggest need and the most draft riches to give, emerges as a contender for Romo. I don't want to hear the "we owe Romo" thing. He has been well compensated. This is about getting the Cowboys the best deal, not healing old wounds or massaging Tony's ego.

Tony is 9th all time in highest TD:int ratio. So drop the turn the ball over #fakenews

I said he turns the ball over more than Alex Smith. That doesn't make Smith the better QB, not hardly but Romo does turn the ball over more.

You're just making relative conjecture then. Several backups didn't turn the ball over this year. They're awesome!

I was just reading and happened upon stupidity. You're the one wanting to argue after stating something bogus.

If you happened on stupidity it didn't come from me. You're disputing Romo doesn't turn the ball over more than Alex Smith? The only thing Smith has going for him is the lack of turnovers.

I don't know what you think young is but you must be ancient if you think I qualify.

I've seen more of both Romo and Smith than most and I'd take the possibility of Romo over the reality of Smith every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

And think of all the football glory Romo has gotten you, old fellow!
Romo's 2 career playoff wins as a QB has me starry-eyed. How about you, old-timer?

QB desperate teams always overpay. I'm sure some of these teams think they can sign Romo if he is released, but with other teams jumping in how much is it worth to secure his services without losing him to another team? If you think Romo is the missing piece to putting you in contention that is worth a lot even if its a 2 year window.

I could see a scenerio with swapping first round picks comes into play in addition to a mid round pick.

He would be great in our offense as a backup but he'll be starting for KC next season. The Chiefs aren't going to release him and bank on Romo staying healthy and not turning the ball over 3 times as much as Smith does. You won't find many QBs in the league that have thrown fewer picks than Alex Smith the past 6 years. His drawback is his lack of production but he's MUCH more mistake free than Romo. I could see KC winning a SB with Alex Smith if they can build a better defense that ranked 24th this season. The Cowboys defense ranked 10 spots higher than KC's.

Bunk.

Alex Smith has also never thrown for more than 23 TDs in a single season... yawn. Smith may have 26 fewer career INTs than Romo, but he's also thrown 91 fewer TDs. Romo's career TD-to-INT ratio: 2.12. And Smith? 1.73.

And you are aware that Romo has only played in 15 more career games than Alex Smith?

You're not getting the point I'm making and it couldn't be more clear. This isn't about Romo vs Alex Smith and who the better QB is because Romo is much better. This is about Alex Smith making a solid "backup" QB in our system. Smith has the same 2-4 playoff record as Romo and he's played in a conference title game, which is something Romo has never done. He led SF to a 13-3 season and he led KC to a 12-4 season this year despite the Chiefs ranking 15th in rushing and 24th in total defense which was 10 spots behind our defense. In our system with Zeke in the backfield he would be a perfect fit if Dak were to go down. If KC is ready to move on from Smith and is looking for a more productive starter to try and get them over the hump, then Romo might be the answer if he can stay healthy.

Smith isn't owed anymore guaranteed money and if he's traded he's going to have to take a sizable play cut because I doubt any team will hand him their starting job unless they have nothing at the position. If Smith is traded it will be the second time a SB contending team has given up on him because he's not the answer. He can't compete in the playoffs with Brady other QBs who are much more productive. Smith would solve our need for a solid backup QB and Romo would solve KC's need for a productive starting QB. Swapping Romo for Alex Smith may be the only way we get anything for Romo because of the injury risk he carries. If a contending team signs Romo to be their starter they're going to be holding their breath he can last one season or at least most of it and get them over the hump.

This would be like a one year go for broke situation to get a team like AZ, KC, Houston or Denver to the SB. Houston and Denver don't seem very interested so AZ if Palmer retires or KC appears to be the only teams Romo would have a chance to have success with. Buffalo has come up but they were 7-9 this season and I can't see Romo wanting to go there or having a chance to get a ring with the Bills who've been cursed since the 90s. With the bad luck Romo has suffered over his career, he's certainly not going to change the Bills luck.
