It's always hindsight in looking at the draft.

That's the way it is and it's not unfair. It's the only way to judge the performance of your talent evaluators. It's THE basis for hiring and firing GMs, personnel guys and scouts.

Looking back on it, someone should explain why Barbie was the 18th best player (or higher) on our board and the #1 rated WR was below him.

Maybe they just missed?

Are they allowed to do that or do we hold them to a unrealistic standard?

It should be noted that Parcells wanted to pass on Terry Glenn in the 1996 draft because the guy he hand picked was Reagan Upshaw.

THE Reagan Upshaw who went on to notch 34 sacks in 8 years of playing.

I understand your point and I agree.

But the Barbie pick was one of our worst in history and there were some pretty good players on the board. You pay for those kind of decisions.

Tonight just brought back a bad memory. I remember being bummed on draft day when the Steelers got Holmes.

Drafting Carpenter was clearly one of the dumbest moves by Parcells but he did find a few diamonds in the rough like Canty and MBIII.

My God will these threads ever end.

Shouldn't Michael Jordan have gone number 1?
Ki-Jana Carter sucked.
Brian Bosworth was a nobody.
Henrik Lundqvist was undrafted.
Tom Brady went in the 7th.

This happens every year in every sport. We've got Bobby. Deal with it.

We could have had Cromartie, Santonio, Nick Mangold, Joseph Addai, DeAngelo Williams, Manny Lawson, and Mathias Kiwanuka too...but what we don't need is a thread about every one of them.

if holmes was on the cowboys, he would've been suspended

he's suspended for 4 games next year from an earlier infraction.

also Ratliff and Crayton... Parcells has always done great with 7th round players wherever he was coaching... OT Ryan Young and WR Troy Brown come to mind

Holmes would have just questioned Garrett's play-calling and complained about Romo not throwing him the ball. He is what he is because he plays on a Pittsburgh team that built through the Draft and has very strong leadership from the top down, along with a vision of how to keep their team competetive year in and year out.

I just had to swallow because I threw up in my mouth a little bit when I realized that Pittsburgh is indeed the antithesis of this years Dallas team. What a crappy offseason this is going to be.

Hindsight is a beautiful thing. Funny how no one was really clamoring for Holmes until after tonight.

You'd be wrong on that one.

That entire 2006 draft was a bust. Jason Hatcher has given us some solid depth, and we are about to find out about him.

To me, Jerry gave Parcells everything he wanted in that draft.

1. Barbie Carpenter
2. Anthony Fasano
3. Jason Hatcher (The Patriots wanted him in round 4.)
4. Skyler Green
5. Pat Watkins
6. The guy from Louisville
7. Pat McQuistan
7. E.J. Wheatley

Yeah. I just caught that while I was watching the mouse run after Holmes as he got on the plane to Pittsburgh.

One out of 4 is pretty decent. Or do you need to be reminded of 96-01?

Yea, we took Bobby Carpenter over Santonio Holmes.

We also took Gregg Ellis over Randy Moss.

Luckly our scouting and drafting has been much, much better over the past 2 years.

If Holmes or Moss had ended up in Dallas they both would have seen year long suspensions.

If Dallas had Holmes they still would not have won a championship yet. The issues on the Cowboys team are not about the physical talent on the field.

I was against the Carpenter pick before the draft. I did not need hindsight to know he was not going to be a good player. I was very surprised when I started seeing him rated as a 1st round pick during his senior year at tOSU. I didn't agree and when I heard rumors that Dallas was interested I was hoping the rumors were wrong.

There were better picks out there. Holmes may have been one of them, but there are definitely questions about his character. Questions that would have been amplified had he ended up in Dallas. The pressure and scrutiny is much greater in Dallas than it is in Pittsburgh. Yes, it doesn't help that Jerry and Wade are enablers, but the pressure would still be there even if a tough guy was in charge of the team. It is Dallas. Every thing is looked at under a microscope. It was during the Landry and Johnson years.

Yup, that's a pretty horrible draft alrght. I don't know who it was that said we hit more than we miss, but that's simply not true.

Our success right now is a direct result of the 2005 draft, as only 1 player from 2004 is still on the roster (Crayton, a 7th rounder). No one from 2006 is an impact player and only Folk and Spencer from 2007 see much action.

That's 3 players from 3 years that turned out to have any real game. I don't think that's a very good ratio at all. 2005 was a great draft and 2008 is shaping up that way as well, but I'll reserve judgement pending more rap videos and avoided tackles.
