In the past, I think that the "higher end" of veteran free agency is the process of obtaining that "last piece' necessary to become a legitimate contender. It's well established that these are "overpaid" contracts. It's often true that the veteran is, simply, the recipient of great timing.
A really good team with one glaring weakness will accept the overpayment if that player completes the "puzzle",

I think it has been used to solidify a previous weakness in conjunction with a promising 1st or 2nd round pick in the previous, or next, draft.

Consider the Eagles. In 2022, although this was a trade for a veteran. They were not known to have a dominant receiving core in 2021. In fact, they were last in attempts and near the bottom in yards and scores. Hurts was the new starter and often struggled in the passing game. Reagor disappointed and left their rookie, Davonta Smith, subject to more intense scrutiny by opponents. Browns participation did not just add another playmaker, it increased the productivity of the others around him.

For another example, a team with a weak D-line might sign Hargrave and then go out and draft an EDGE in the 1st round. Hargrave would increase his value to the team by taking some pressure of the rookie, physically because opponents could almost never double team them both. It would give that rookie more freedom to make plays.

These are two examples of players being more than an "addition" to a team. The veteran free agent provides more of a "multiplicative" effect. His individual production may not warrant his contract, but the potential of the team, the timing of his free agency, and the availability of comparable talent could.

Therefore, we fans often only see the monetary side of a contract in comparison to recorded stats of his previous performance. What the franchise could really be paying out is an incremental part of the cap space to dramatically increase the probability of a championship.

Now, which of the 32 teams could benefit the most by signing Hargraves?

Noticing that $20M per year seems to be the going rate for every free agent non-QB recently.

I remember a year ago it was considered too much, even for a top WR... lol/smh
Cooper's 20mil for 2023-2024 not looking so bad anymore.

Quinn was retained so Jerry doesn't need to spend money on defense
He can continue building the greatest offense ever seen.

Draft a good teachable DT, and call it a day. Why spend that kind of money when you have a draft coming up?

I'm sure that number is shocking to a team that doesn't spent half that on all their DTs combined.

Eagles are going to lose a lot of players and their roster will come back to earth this yr. Doesn't mean they still cannot be successful, but a lot more has to go right.
Eagles suck but basically it’s like they bought their rookies another year to succeed. Jordan Davis was a top pick and has a higher ceiling than Hargrave. The way people talk about him he should come right in and play now.

Had a great year last year, 23 sacks in 3 years since joining Philly, and each year the sack numbers increased.

So, it seems plausible. QB's are about to hit 50mil AAV, and some are freaking out over 20mil to a DT that shows he can get to the QB?

Probably has 1-2 more "peak" years left. Could see him get that AAV and be cut 2 years into his deal after guarantees dry up.

What team is gonna pay that to Hargrave? He’s gonna be one of these guys who finds out real quick what his market is when no one signs him for that.

So Jerry is vindicated, don’t over pay for a DT. :muttley::popcorn:
You cant spend on every positional grouping....our approach at DT, limited one-way specialists...if we pair a run preventing Hankins and a more pass rushing Osa....that should FACILITATE a 1) LB to play the run and 2) pass-rush from edge and Micah.
