Was this Jerry Jones’ most disappointing season? He gives convoluted answer

By Clarence E. Hill Jr.
chill@star-telegram.com

Jerry Jones was asked on his radio show on 105.3 FM Tuesday morning if the 2015 season was his most disappointing as Cowboys owner.

Considering the Cowboys came into the season with Super Bowl hopes after winning 12 games and making it the NFC Divisional playoffs a year ago, going 4-10 certainly would have to register high on his negative list.

The Cowboys went from 12-4 last year to 4-10 so far in 2015. It’s already the biggest one-season collapse in franchise history.

Jones, however, was noncommittal in his elongated and convoluted answer.

"Well, I would say that relative to the players, relative to what I think of this coaching staff, which I understand the criticism that we're under right now," Jones said. "But when I look at the players, what I thought we could be defensively, and then what we certainly were just a few short -- I almost called it months ago, but it was last year -- and you can't live in the past.
"But when I looked at what we had put together on the field, maybe we were going to be struggling in those first four ballgames, maybe we might split those first four ballgames. I'm giving you my thoughts. But once we got [Greg] Hardy out there, once we got [Rolando] McClain out there, once we got a few games underneath our belt, I thought we were going to be a whale of a football team.
"And, yes, it's far different and much less than I had anticipated, much less than we paid for, much less than we put the money out there for, if that counts. We put it in the places that I thought we had a chance to get better, get where we needed to get better, particularly in the pass rush. I thought we would be pretty dynamic in the pass rush, and certainly whether it be field position or whether it be what we've asked them to do, we just haven't been what we thought we'd be."

if we had a coaching staff that knew how to get the best of it's players then the clowns we have now. we might have a chance to compete for the playoffs then waiting to see what draft position we are going to end up with.

lol. Phrase your questions for yes or no replies if you don't want Jones to give elongated, convoluted answers. Granted, his answers will still be tangled up but they won't necessarily be nearly as long.

Here's a VERY troubling aspect of his answer: he's blaming the defense, rather than the offense, for this team's performance.

He is shockingly out of touch.

It's true that the defense played better than the offense.
But given what happened in free agency and the injuries, it might be fair to say that the defense has been more disappointing than the offense.

I can understand his answer.

None of us thought for a nano-second this season would happen.

Injuries are the problem.

The team had no answers due to the cap and both its highest paid players being injured.

Jerry is not going to flip on his coaches and players becuz we are unhappy.

To them..its a business.

To us..it a game.

Big difference.

I'm sure Jerrah would like to have seen a different outcome.

Wouldn't we all.

Personnally..this season to me is exactly what we needed.

We need several high draft picks to cement our improvement.

We would not have gotten any decent draft picks going 10-6 or 9-7 and lose in the first round again.

How so? You can't expect a defense to hold or play to their potential when they are on the field way too much. Our defense had us in games and our offense scored how many TD's this year? Especially in the 4Q? Our offense has been more disappointed when you look at how terrible our WR's have been (and yes I am including Dez).

I dont necessarily disagree with the points you've made, but at some point we need to be a winner, a contender and stop all this preparing and building for the future. 20 yrs and counting of this always looking at the bright side and preparing to build a team that can make a run . We were close last year and might not be close again. Im all for making a few tweaks while we have Romo and go for it. If it doesnt pan out no loss. What lies in store post Romo is coming and there is no reason to be optimistic based on our track record.

Offense and Defense

If opposing teams had to fear the passing game our running game would be even better.

If our secondary was better the D-line would be tearing it up.

Revamp the secondary, get a legit backup QB and add another WR and this team could be dangerous.

Really? That seems a stretch. Although the defense did blow two overtime games.....

I find it troubling that he was willing to concede two of the first four games. He thought his team was good enough to overcome a 2-2 record. Winning franchises don't concede a game. That's why you see Brady going to federal court to get his 4 game suspension overturned. He understands that conceding 2 or 3 of the first four games put you in a big enough hole that your whole season is at risk. Jerry is thinking: hey I've got all these defensive stars coming back to get us on a run. And he should be thinking about winning them all, putting his team in position to win them all. And that's the difference between a .500 regime and a constant winner.
