Homeristic fans? Are you a homer?

I am sure that this has probably been discussed before, but I haven’t seen it so I wanted to raise the topic again.

While everyone can be a homer to some extent, I am constantly amazed at the amount of abject homerism displayed by fans of all NFL clubs. I love the Dallas Cowboys, I have since I was 7, I will always be a fan. I expect my team to do well every year, but I try to remain objective at the same time. I have found that the majority of this board falls into that category, which is probably why I like it here so much. Not that I agree with everything that is said, in fact I disagree with some of you almost all the time, but I just don’t see the blatant homerism on this board that I see on some of the others.

For example, if you go over to extremeskins they have a thread where they are forecasting their wins and losses for 07. Most of the guesses have come in the 12-4 range. While I think it is great to back your team, I just can’t for the life of me see how anyone, homer or not could expect that team to go from 5-11 to 12-4. They point to injuries and the like, but good lord, no pass rush last year, and adding 27 DB’s in the off season isn’t going to address that.

You can find evidence of that on every message board of every team around the league, well perhaps not the lions, those guys are pissed and they will probably stay that way. I see it here as well but I see the opposite more frequently. A lot of people are almost anti-homerisitic for the sake of not being a homer. Sometimes, I wonder if they are fans at all, or maybe they are just sour about life in general and always expect the worst. I dunno.

I guess my question is this:

Do you consider yourself a homer?

I do at times, but I think I am realistic enough to be objective. I am curious as to how the rest of you feel about it.

Well, I have my moments. Like this evening when I was watching Sports Center and they broke down the NFC East and we were picked 2nd behind Philly on both sides of the ball, I got pissed momentarily, especially when Schlereth said our offensive line, even with Davis is just "average". Then I realized, well, can't argue with us being picked behind Philly. They are still the team to beat for the division and until we do it, we SHOULD be rated behind them. Win the EAST in 08!

Yes and no, I love the Cowboys and the traditions, history of winning, and of course I want them to win the superbowl every year, that's our right isn't it?:D But I just get sick of Jerry Jones being the GM, and I disagree with just about everything he does from that position as it relates to player personnel, and the coaches he hires except Jimmy and Bill and I get tired of him being the "face" (which could use a tightening up again) of the Cowboys. This is the only decade in Cowboys history the they haven't won a playoff game or made a NFC Championship game, and it's all under Jerry's direction. The game is not about the owners, what made it great is the coaches and players, but I guess Jerry doesn't get that or he doesn't care.:( Having said that, he has done a few things that i'm glad for, but I won't share what those are, I'd hate to be nice.:D

If I'm not a homer because of that then so be it, folks opinion of me or what I think doesn't make me any less of a fan.

Personally, I'm more of a Pollyanna... or Kevin Bacon in "Animal House" confronting the mob running from the parade, saying "Remain calm, all is well!!" :D

I am not an objective fan. Every season, regardless of circumstance, I seek reasons for a successful Cowboy season, and I argue those reasons. In fact, during the Campo years, I was working at grocery store while attending college, and every preseason, two of my fellow workers would hold an NFL prediction contest. And although it's not astonishing that I picked the Cowboys to win the NFC East every time, it is astonishing that I won the contest so often.

Go figure!

One could argue that I was rewarded for my faith. ;)

I have been known to partake of the kool-aide but I didn't swallow:D

so I have like just minutes of homerism from the secondhand stuff people are handing out but most of the times I think I am pretty realistic in my accessments

No, I am NOT a homer.
And I have yet to meet any Cowboys fan who can honestly say the same.

Hell yeah I'm a homer.

Just not as bad as the skins or eagles homers.

But I will defend every player that wears the Star.
